This song is based off a very old poem that would later be covered by Leadbelly, Fred Gerlach, and others. The story is a guy is going to be hanged and he hopes someone would come bribe the hangman to let him go. His friends came but said they were too poor, his brother came with silver and gold, finally his sister came and the condemned man begged her to have sex with the hangman, which she did (the hangman says "Yes, you've got a fine sister. She warmed my blood from cold. She warmed my blood to boiling hot to keep you from the gallows pole"). The hangman responds at the end "Your brother brought me silver and your sister warmed my soul, but now I laugh and pull so hard to see you swinging from the gallows pole) - meaning, after paying the hangman with everything they had, he hung the guy anyway, so he's swinging from the noose on the gallows pole while the rest of the band starts laughing - all the "a ha ha's". I love this song. The musicality hides the macabre lyrics. You think it's this fun, bouncy, blue grass style song but you realize it's a bit odd once you know the lyrics. This song is great anytime but it's perfect for October lol. They didn't perform this live but sometimes vocalist Robert Plant would put some of the lyrics into other songs they performed onstage, like Trampled Under Foot.
gallows pole means a hangman's pole. it's an old english story about the poor being hanged for stealing and such. the gallows was the place they'd take you to be hanged. that's why the singer is talking about his friends bringing him money to bail him out and save his life.
Zeppelin had a tremendous musical range. Love how you guys are enjoying the music me and my friends grew up with. You're really getting educated by one of the top bands in history!
From a 17th century English folk song. I learnt this at school 60 years ago.I guess Jimmy Page must have heard it in school, if it was a part of the English schools curriculum. Leadbellty recorded a version of this in the 1940s, it was mistitled as, “Gallis Po;e” when the recording engineer misheard Leadbelly’s pronunciation. A gallows pole is what a condemned man would be hung from. You must have played the game of Hangman. What you draw is a picture of a gallows.
The Gallows Pole is the hanging pole that the English have nicknamed a hanging mechanism since way back when they were using the Irish as their play things to torture before they came across the po
Oh yeah, The singer, Robert Plant is the GOAT OF SINGERS!!! That’s my opinion. Luv your reactions guys. Can’t go wrong with the best of the best!! Rock on!!¡
Swinging from the gallows pole... Means hung by your neck. The gallow is the structure built, a raised platform, for the purpose of hanging someone, and the gallows pole is the beam that runs over the top, above the trap doors, and it's purpose is to support the weight of the executed individual. In some cases, as a caution to others the body may be left to hang for days, swinging from the gallows pole
