All the vintage machines shown take a standard flat-sided needle. The needle is always threaded from the round side to the flat side. The needle must be set in the machine the right way round. Which way it needs to be set depends on the stitch formation mechanism. This video shows how to identify the mechanism and so set the needle correctly.
The transverse shuttle machine shown is a Frister and Rossmann and all the other machines shown are Singers.

Thank you so much for sharing your knowledge with us. Having to quickly thread a machine from a collection of assorted machines in the thick of sewing something would get me completely confused if I didn't see the bobbins. Actually even looking at the bobbins might not really clue me in. LOL Have a great day, Muv.

Thanks to this video, I managed to find out that the rotating wheel of my 99K in the bobbin area isn't moving as it should. Managed to fix myself. I wouldn't have known the position it should have been if not for this. Thanks!

Hello. What needle can you use for the long bobbin machine please? I have a Bradley Family Sewing machine. Really appreciate any feedback. Thank you.

@Lizzie Lenard, On our USA made Singer model 101, made in 1928, with a drop in rotary hook bobbin, the manual says to have the flat side of the needle pointing to the right and threaded from left to right. But, in your video you said for rotary bobbins the flat side of the needle should be pointed to the left and threaded from right to left. Was this an error in your video or are their exceptions to this rule?

      Hello Woody,
Thank you for pointing out the exception to the rule. The 101 is not a model I have encountered in this country. Another way to check which way to set the needle is to see which side of the needle the last hook to thread the thread through is, but sometimes people don't spot the last hook.

Hi Lizzie, Thank you so much for commenting back to me so quickly and for your excellent instructional videos. I'm new to sewing and your videos are helping me so much. I've copied a link to the Singer Model 101 owner/operating manual below. On page 23 in the manual, it shows a picture of the thread going through the hooks and needle. The last hook is on the left and the thread goes through the needle from left to right (so the round side of the needle should be on the left and the flat side on the right?) I'm wondering if this configuration will create problems using a Singer walking foot attachment or does it not make any difference? Here is the link to the manual including page 23 (the actual page number is at the top of each page): www.singerco.com/uploads/download/5ca5b5bf09dcfd3c76dc6d45f2a94ffa6bbd9e18.pdf
      Thank you again.

      Hello again Woody,
Thanks for the link to the manual. Yes, set the needle with the flat side on the right, and thread it as shown in the manual. Provided the walking foot fits your machine, the way the needle is threaded will make no difference.
      Good luck with the sewing!

Hi Lizzy, you're welcome. That's what I hoped you'd say about the walking foot. I'll buy a Singer low shank walking foot. I'll be using it to make some 6 foot long patio swing cushion covers with zippers (I'll use a zipper foot too) and Sunbrella marine grade fabric with V92 Tenara thread. I bought Singer #2026 size 18 needles. I cleaned and oiled the machine. I ordered motor lubricant so this week I'll lubricate the motor and gears. After I'm done with the cushions, I'll refinish the cabinet too. My wife has a Singer treadle machine, with oak cabinet, that her mother gave her (she has never used it, but she has been watching your videos as well so that may change). I'll be reconditioning that machine too, after this project, so I can try my hand at sewing with a treadle machine. Your videos have helped me a lot with the cleaning, oiling and understanding of how to operate the vintage sewing machines (even though mine has an ugly motor on it). You've helped to make this project doable, even for a novice like me. Thanks again for the wonderfully detailed videos and answering my questions.
