Rear Window is, hands down, one of my very favourite Hitchcock films. OMG it's SO good. The suspense level in this movie is unreal. Edited to add: the thing I love most about Adam's Rib is the amazing back-and-forth dialogue we get from Tracy and Hepburn. They were such an incredible team both onscreen and off. And Bringing Up Baby!! Ha, I love that one it's so zany. Gotta love screwball comedies. That scene towards the end where they're all in jail kills me.

The Dark Corner is a wonderful classic starring Lucille Ball. I'm a sucker for anything with her in it. Whether it be comedy or serious roles as this. Stone Pillow a more modern yet old movie starring Ball is great! It was her last film before she passed 4 years later.

That's a nice set of films. I know allot of people turn away from The Sound of Music after being forced to watch it over and over on Christmas as a child. Luckily, I was not one of those and got to discover it on it's own. You would expect from the mostly light and airy songs that the film doesn't have depth, but it slowly doles it out to you as you go and then whomps you with it as you get towards the end.
I remember falling in love with Funny Face after knowing nothing coming in. I was one who leaned towards the Katherine end of the Hepburn spectrum, but this is one charming film that really does let her show off many facets of her acting and has an insane amount of charm.
After Philadelphia Story, I was looking for something else from Katherine Hepburn and came across Bringing up Baby. The two films couldn't be more different with BuB allowing her and Cary Grant to just have fun. Whereas Adam's Rib was one of my earlier Spencer Tracy films that lives on the spirited repartee between the oft sparing stars. When I first started watching older films Grant, Stewart, Hepburn, Bogart, and a few other names came up to watch pretty much anything of theirs you can get your hands on, but the more I watched, the more I couldn't believe that Tracy wasn't included in the list (I think for many he is).
Looking forward to more video's on film and classic films. Btw, that outfit deserves an old Hollywood entrance, perhaps a slow decent down a grand flight of stairs.

It Happened One Night is also a great comedy., for anyone who likes Bringing Up Baby. It’s basically the prototype for the modern romantic comedy. And it’s one of the first road trip movies

A favourite old movie of mine is the 1932 movie called Freaks! It was created before the laws about content in Hollywood were made so it was considered really shocking in the 1930s, like people fainting in the cinemas. It's a horror based in a circus and while the representation of "the freaks" was very bad since the actual actors had disabilities you see them get revenge on this horrible woman dating one of them for money and it's just a great plot. The difference in the time period is very obvious. I watched it on youtube since I can't find it on any other platforms because a lot of the footage from the original feature has been messed up and lost etc. but if you guys want a pretty short movie to watch I really recommend it! :)

    OK, here's six of mine:
'White Heat'. One of the best old-school gangster films of all time. James Cagney was an AMAZING actor, and he's particularly good here. It's intense, it's action-packed, it's psychological - great stuff.
'The Adventures of Robin Hood'. Huge amounts of fun. Errol Flynn is great as Robin, Olivia deHavilland makes for a gorgeous and strong Maid Marian, and the whole thing is just jam-packed with action, romance, sword fights, etc. And the score is great, and you gotta love that eye-popping Technicolor, and it's one of my favorite movies and everyone should see it.
'House on Haunted Hill'. Vincent Price does not get enough love these days, and he's great here as the suave villain/host. It's one of those plot-heavy films where you wind up going 'wait a minute; isn't there a hole there somewhere?', but in this case, the twisty atmosphere actually renders that a positive, in my opinion. Plus, wonderfully hokey old special effects, old-school haunted house stuff galore - overall, the absolute perfect movie for spooky old-school fun on Halloween.

...Dang it, half didn't make it for some reason. Let's try again with the rest:
'Breakfast at Tiffany's'. Well, we can't forget THIS Audrey Hepburn movie, can we? Yes, I know everyone goes after Mickey Rooney's over-the-top 'Japanese' neighbor, and I will admit he's a bit much, but Audrey herself is lovely as always, and it's just an oddly relaxing film.
'It's A Wonderful Life'. The absolute definitive old-school Christmas movie, but beyond that, just a really good and well-made film. Jimmy Stewart is terrific in the lead; he's both a believably nice guy and flawed in a very relatable way, so you remain invested in his story throughout. Both psychological and feel-good.
'Creature From The Black Lagoon'. One of the more underrated of the Universal monster films. Old-school B-movie fun, but also some surprisingly effective and beautiful underwater filming, and an amazing costume design for the Creature.

Adam's Rib is actually one of my favorite Tracy and Hepburn films. At first I didn't like Katharine Hepburn, but once I watched more from her she became a favorite actress of mine. Favorite as in overall favorites, though- not sure if she would make a more narrowed down list. I recommend The Philadelphia Story (1940) if you haven't seen it. On your Letterboxd it says you've seen High Society, which is a remake of it. I do like High Society, but I find The Philadelphia Story much more rewatchable, enjoyable, and I just prefer the cast as well: Katharine Hepburn, Cary Grant, and James Stewart. I also really like Desk Set (1957) with Tracy and Hepburn. I don't consider it a great film, but I find it enjoyable. Another favorite Katharine Hepburn films is Summertime (1955), although it's been like six years since I've seen it and I wouldn't technically classify it as Old Hollywood because it's a UK film.
I feel like there are a bunch of films I could recommend, but I also feel like you've probably already at least heard of them...

If you haven't already you should watch Stage Door (1937) it's a great film. All star cast- Katherine Hepburn. Ginger Rogers, Eve Arden, Lucille Ball, Ann Miller. It's extremely witty, the kind of wit you usually only get from depression era films. It's my favorite Katherine Hepburn role!

@@karac.a. I know that one! I can't remember if I've seen it or not, though! Obviously I'll have to give it a watch and see. Really you can't go wrong with anything Katharine Hepburn. There are movies of hers I've seen that I wasn't a huge fan of but she's phenomenal no matter what and it's still interesting seeing films from earlier eras.

    • @BaileeWalsh

@@karac.a. Bringing Up Baby is really amusing, especially in suspending your disbelief. I think that's the first film of Katharine's I watched and I found her so annoying- mostly because of the character she plays. But really it's a great role for her, it's better on rewatches (in my opinion), I love Cary Grant, and as I said in my initial comment she's become one of my favorite actresses after watching more of her work!
It's alright! We ALL have our blind spots in film that sound unbelievable with not having seen! I... I haven't seen Citizen Kane, yet. 😶

The Sound of Music is without a doubt one of the greatest movie musicals of all time. I mean Julie Andrews is just incredible and this movie was such a staple for me because my mom use to sing me Doe A Dear when I was very young so this film was always in my life. By the way (and I have to apologize for doing this here...I wasn't sure if I should reach out by other means) I am planning a collaboration about the importance of classics in literature, film and other entertainment and why they still need to be given exposure especially to the younger generations. Watching a great deal of your videos and appreciating your passion for the classics, I feel you would be a person who would be perfect to join me for the discussion. Would you be interested? If yes let me know the best way to contact you so I can provide you more details. Thank you for listening and keep up the great work.
