@@heimlershistory I forgot to say, "Another wonderful video!" The First Amendment forbids the federal government from discrimination on the basis of religion. And through incorporation by way of the 14th Amendment, the state governments. Private colleges and universities are not covered by the 1st or 14th amendments. So the federal government said, "If you want federal government money, here are the rules you have to follow." I am somewhat astonished that religion was not included as a forbidden ground of discrimination.
You’re right about that. And I don’t know why they left religion out. If I had to guess, it would have something to do with Evangelical cultural dominance during the 50s. By 1964, though it was starting to wane, Christians were not yet scrambling for legal protection like they would be in the 70s when all the cultural upheaval threatened their influence.
