  • Here I am taking the JP Heater apart.
    Seems to be very well put together. Perhaps not the easiest for maintenance but you're unlikely to need to go as deep inside as I did.
    This heater can operate from a diesel fuel source, mains electricity, or a combination of the two.
    LPG, 110/120V versions are also available
    Please note these are the only official links for JP Heaters. Beware of fake versions.

    I don't envy you putting that back together! Seeing what's inside shows these units are actually quite good value when you compare it to an ordinary air or water heater. A lot of design effort has gone into this.

      Yeah the original company spends some real coin designing this.

    Thanks for the teardown! It almost seems as if that outer cover should have been two separate pieces that screwed on, instead of slotting together.

    The “HELLOOO!!” Is just so distinctive I love it, and the little tune at the end. I was wondering if you’ve ever looked at 12v compressor fridges in depth like you have with diesel heaters, cooling test and power draw, bit of a strip down to see what the cheap vs expensive compressors are like

    • @DavidMcLuckie
      @DavidMcLuckie  11 місяців тому

      I borrowed a friends compressor fridge for a brief compressor vs coolbox video. But I didn't want to take his fridge apart. Even the cheapest compressor fridge is better than any of the TEC coolboxes - ua-cam.com/video/x0kiGaUIA0o/v-deo.html

    we have the Truma version of this, and I think its just a 10L tank of hot water. When you ask for hot water you have to wait 20 minutes or so, then you can use the hot water taps, if you run the taps to long you run out of hot water. the Truma also comes with a cold weather water dump valve so the tank doesn't split if its left with water in the tank in winter. This dump valve can be a pain though in cold weather as its on the floor of the van in a non-heated area and can sometimes dump when you don't want it to...have to wrap the valve in warm gel packs and tea towels.

    can you maybe run the heater with the cover off?? in various modes...... wth FLR cam running in various places to see path of water heating. That mightttttt give a clue on it it is coils of passing water heated (like an instant hot water heater,) or if it is passing hot air onto surface/fins of a storage tank. to heat the water.. or bit of both???

    Great Great video! I have just disassembled mine and hopefully I will be able to put it back together 😅 after 1 year of use the water tank got a leak from the middle welding.I made sure the tank was empty close to freezing temperatures...if am still trying to figure out if this device has a mechanism built in to prevent over pressure or something should be intaled on the hot water exit?

    • @DavidMcLuckie
      @DavidMcLuckie  10 місяців тому +2

      Mine doesn't. In the manual for the Truma it mentions fitting a pressure relief valve to the outlet. So I don't think it comes as standard.

      Thanks@@DavidMcLuckie however by searching for pressure release valves for truma I only get these anti frost taps...still don't know what to buy 😅 either if I buy a new one (are you selling yours?) or if I manage to repair the tank I need to make sure I install the right pressure release valve

    Hey David.. So any final thoughts on this for a caravan? I am in Canada and converting a cargo type trailer into a Camper Caravan. I have been on the fence about ordering one of these. Are there any competitors you would recommend looking at before I order based on your experience with these? I would likely go with the LPG version.

      There are/were some on AliExpress and Alibaba. They are huge though, so shipping would likely cost more than the heater.

    Looking at the video (again), other than the electronic control, there doesn't seem to be any thermostatic control / mixer for the hot water temperature?
    I guess this is intended to be connected to a calorifier (which does use a mixer to control the output water temperature) rather than feeding taps / shower directly?
    Also the water connections look fairly small bore? Comparing them to the size of your fingers, I'm guessing 10mm OD? (unless you have Gorilla fingers 🤣 that is)

    • @DavidMcLuckie
      @DavidMcLuckie  11 місяців тому

      Water connections are 10mm push fit connections. No mixer controls built in. I'm sure in the manual I saw it plumbed into one but it isn't included. Also lots of mentions for professional installation only. :)

    Nope sorry David youve made me decide that Ill never buy one if it cant be dismantled properly and what a lot of crap to go through just to get to the glow plug. looks like it wasnt designed to be user friendly and I bet thats got something to do with electricity flowing through it when its plugged in. so someone has already decided for us that it wont be user serviceable because of health and saftey laws, trhank god for China and their relaxed laws that let us tinker to our hearts content.

      I imagine it's now in the same boat as the Webasto/Eberspacher heaters where the patent is now expired and anyone can make them. It's most likely JP Heaters has been the factory making the Truma heaters and can now sell them under their own branding.
