Thanks for this great video. My 2005 honda civic sedan is exhibiting the same issue with the rear passenger door lock. Your video has given me the guidance to test/replace this myself instead of paying a shop $$$$ to repair this for me.
Just bought a clean 2005 Honda Civic. It wasn't until I came home that I realized the driver door doesn't unlock/lock with the fob. Pretty sure it's the actuator now after watching your vid. Thanks for the easy and clear instructions, man. I think you've saved me a lot of money from the mechanic. Any idea if installation is any different for a driver door? Thanks again
Thanks for the very detailed video. I have a problem on my 2004 EP3 Civic, my drivers door would always lock, but not unlock with the fob. I would have to lift the rod manually for the last milimeter or two. I just replaced the door actuator with a new one, and the same thing happens. It locks, and ALMOST unlocks but it stops a few milimeters too short. Is it something to do with the rods? Do I just lube every single moving part inside and hope for the best? And my passenger side is fully dead, will get that fixed right after figuring this one out. Thank you
Did you ever figure it out, I’m stuck. Mine will try to unlock but only a millimeter away from unlocking it will get stuck or stay still. And the other door just got a new actuator but it’s dead
@@neidyrodriguez7167 Sorry for the late reply, never got the notification. Yes, I did. After trying to fix the old actuator and putting the new one in I realized that the connections had no power so I investigated further, turns out the prior owner installed one of those "Universal central locking systems" and the actual actuators were just hanging there, connected by wires that went noowhere. And the universal locking ones have a rod that ties to the actual rod you see from the interior when u lock/unlock, and the clamp has loosened over time, so it didnt have enough grip to fully unlock it. So I got a new clamp, tied it back together tighter and it works now, very weird, I didnt even know those Universal ones were a thing so I never noticed the little black box inside the door card. And the Passenger side had no power to the Universal one either, and it turned out that one of the wires had a lot of corrosion at the connection point, so I just re-cut, re-splyced them, isolated and it works. Good luck
@BigDogg50001, I've got a 2003 Civic EX Sedan. Rear passenger side door lock doesn't work (unless manually opening) using either keyless remote or driver door lock switch. The rear lock doesn't appear to be getting any power as doesn't move (except if manually done) when using keyless or door lock switch. Based on your idea, I do not think it's the door lock actuator, so what should I check?
I have a 2003 Civic 4 Dr EU8 model with passenger and rear passenger ( both ride side ) door power lock problems. Any chance you could do a video on that model ? The front door wire harness looks harder to get access to
Thank you for your video . I know it shot to ground somewhere but have no idea how to trace at begining . Any suggestion would be highly appreciated . Thanks
Really good video bro, I have a question tho. I have a 04 Sedan Lx and the driver lock won't go down it doesnt matter how much force I put into it, when I put my key in the fob it wont move at all in both doors, and I lock and unlock with the control and I can hear the locks trying to lock and unlock but the bearly move or dont move, do I need to replace all actuators or that box that sends the signal to all four doors?
My Mom's 2006 Honda Civic EX trunk will not open with her remote, have you done a video on replacing the actuator for the trunk by chance> Thanks for your great videos all others (IMHO) just don't compare!
I jsut got a Civic Hatchback 2001. Only drivers door and hatch will unlock. Could be some kind of settings or would all 3 other doors have some issue. Alle electric windows function normally. I guess i need to get a multimeter to check for currents.
Hey brother your video was really good but it didn’t help me figure my problem with my Power locks on my 2008 Honda Pilot my problem is when I hit my remote twice to open all doors it locks back up in 1 second all the doors even when I hit the door switch to open on both sides even with the key in ignition and vehicle off or on now if I hit the fob once the driver door unlocks can you give me sense
I have a 01 civic 2 door, and I moved to Arizona from Michigan, and the car battery went dead at some point being in the sun maybe. So I replaced that, then it seemed like shortly after the key fob would not open the drivers door maybe 30% of the time. So I replaced battery in key fob but started doing it again. Its all original. The hand switch door lock button has always been not very forceful of a lock, and the passenger door has never locked/unlocked with the fob. I didnt know it was suposed to.
That last actuator looked huge and quite more expensive being that big and with that many parts. Are those stronger or do they also go bad as "easy" as the others?
what do you think would be the problem if my civic didn’t lock or unlock using the remote and if also it didn’t lock by pushing down on the lock manually from inside the car?
Do you know if the Multiplex unit in a Honda Civic 2001 can be repaired, as they no longer make it as a spare part? My Honda Civic 2001 won't start, and the Honda dealer say the Multiplex is faulty.
Always double check part numbers, don't take my word for it. Sides of vehicle are always in relation to sitting in driver's seat.Part for right side door handles: 72149-SR4-000 Part for left side door handles: 72189-SR4-000
Thank you for the great video. Seems like these problems dealing with the window and lock actuator could also be blamed on worn out wires (the one that connects from the door to body of the car). How often do you think the wires are to blame?
Sometimes wiring and connections are the problem, maybe 10% of the time. This happens more often in areas where there is a lot of corrosion. Most of the time it is a component failure. Thanks for the comment!

Hey, I know I’m commenting 3 years late, but I need help, I don’t have a key fob so I used the lock button inside my car and it does nothing, but when I manually lock the car, all the locks go down, so I was wondering what the fuse is called that I need to replace
My key fob unlocks the doors, but then instantly locks them. The driver door won't open at all. The only way to get in the car is to quickly open the passenger door before it locks again. It happened once before in winter when the door latch froze. Could this be an issue caused by the door latch itself?
It is possible there is a problem with one of the door latches, it sounds like an input problem. It needs troubleshooting done but the control module is most likely seeing an input to lock the doors and so have to narrow down what is causing the input.
@@BigDog50001 thanks for the reply, I think the door latch failed when closing the door, the door bounced back open, whilst I had set off driving. I managed to flick the lock to keep the door shut. This has probably triggered some safety feature to auto lock the doors (because the car was moving) Now I just need to get the door card off somehow without being able to open the door.
I have a 2005 Honda Civic Dx, my windows are manual. My left door won’t open because the lock is STUCK. Can not open the door at all. I was wondering if the actuator is on the right side for my car as well. Also I stopped using my remote to open my car because the driver door doesn’t unlock when I press it. (I have to go through the passenger side and push it up). Is there a certain name for the wire/cable that connects to the lock?
Those Civics use rods (not cables) and there are several of them (cylinder rod/lock rod/outer handle rod/inner handle rod). Both sides are pretty much a mirror image. I have seen the door lock actuators become frozen and stuck and not move and other times it is an issue with the latch. Penetrating oil can sometimes help (spraying down through the window opening at latch/lock or through the inside door handle area and then working handles and rods back and forth). Unfortunately many times breaking stuff (like the door panel, latch, lock etc) so that you can get to the problem area is the only way to fix it.
When you click the key fab, or the door lock button in the car, and it does not lock or unlock, could it just be a bad fuse? Or could the whole internal fuse box be bad?
It is possible to be one or both or a million other things. The locks are controlled by the Multiplex Control Unit which is part of the under DASH fuse box (inside car). Fuse 16 (20A) in the under HOOD fuse box (inside engine compartment) provides battery power to the Multiplex Control Unit for the door locks.
Have to track power (or ground) circuit back to the source (battery/chassis) until you find where you are losing it. Have to know circuit design and all components involved in that circuit.
Hey I have a 2002 civic we replaced the activator but it only locks the doors when we try to open it through the central lock it doesn’t open the doors it only locks it what do you think is the problem??
Hopefully the Multiplex unit is not damaged. The power to the door locks are ultimately controlled by the Multiplex control unit (part of the under dash fuse box) through electrical "inputs" to the control unit. If all of the locks work in one direction but not the other then most likely power is good to the Multiplex unit (still not a bad idea to check fuses 9 and 16 under hood and 10 under dash for power). I would verify that ALL power door locks do NOT work in one direction FROM EVERY SINGLE "INPUT" (key in door, key FOB, door lock switch). If ALL locks work in BOTH directions from at least ONE of the INPUTS, I would look towards an input problem to the Multiplex unit from the input that was not working (bad switch/FOB/wiring etc). If ALL locks do NOT work in both directions from ANY input, then I would look towards a problem with the Multiplex control unit. As you can see, troubleshooting this system can be a bit complicated and usually requires some background into how the system operates to find a problem when it isn't a bad door lock actuator. Hopefully this at least helps you understand what you are paying for if you end up paying someone else to fix it for you.
I have a honda SI 2002 mine passenger side unlocks only it doesn't lock it sounds weird sometimes and also sometimes works should I just change that actuator? Thanks
I have a Honda 2004 civic I have a problem with one rear door never locks even if u try to push it won’t stay down or go down the other rear won’t ever unlock even if u try to unlock it. The remote will lock the two front doors but not any rear doors or unlock them do I know how to fix it or I just want to know if there a way to fix by my self
I test lock actuators just like I showed in video. Many times the problem is a bad actuator, either it doesn't move at all, only moves a little bit, or is stuck and can't even be moved by hand, but testing is required.
Need help please, 06 civic sedan- driver side front door. Actuator is lock or seize close and I can't manually or remote lock or unlock the door lock. It won't move. I can't open the door . I manage get door panel off and have access to actuator. But how do I get it to release to open door. I have tried removing and reinserting the rod that goes into actuator from door lock . It wont unlock. How can I get it to release to open door to get to those 3 screws holding the actuator.
In which part of the car is the module of the electric locks?, since a door of my Civic 2004 does not receive electrical signal, but if the actuator works that raises the insurance
The locks are controlled by the Multiplex Control Unit (MICU) which is part of the fuse box under left side dash inside vehicle. If lock actuator works when given power/ground, some possible causes are broken wires, bad wiring connector or bad Multiplex Control Unit. **I do not give any lock component power/ground while plugged in because it can damage the drivers inside the MICU.
Need help, same car. But I can't manually lock or unlock the rear door lock. It won't move. I can't open the door panel because I can't open the door. The lock won't unlock.
Sometimes the lock mechanisms or the latches will seize in place and they can be a bear to get undone. I would start by removing the door handle like I showed at around 6:30 in the video and try to work the lock rod and door hand rod back and forth. In situations like that I will sometimes lower window and spray penetrating oil down towards lock and latch rods and mechanisms. Sometimes damaging the door components is the only way they get fixed.
Double check work, especially the door lock knob that pokes out of the top of the door panel, they can get jammed during reinstall and do what you are describing.
I have an 03 civic sedan manual trans, I replaced the driver side actuator OEM from Honda. Fuse for door locks in engine bay is fine. Yet, all doors only unlock from both key fobs but will not lock. When sitting in the car with all doors closed, all doors lock if I manually push down the door stud. The unlock/lock switch on the door handle only unlocks all doors. Same as the key fobs So now I have a spare actuator but no solution. Please help. Anybody know if there’s a component or relay or something I should check. So annoyed. Thanks.
It is almost impossible to diagnose things over the internet and you did not say whether problem was there before or after putting a new door lock actuator in, but I would look for input problems to Multiplex Control Unit first (I have seen Multiplex unts fried due to improper installation/testing of components so hopefully the MICU is not damaged or bad). From your description, the doors lock properly when manually pressing door lock rod, so power and ground to locks appear to be ok. If you look at 12:45 in video, you will notice doors do not lock until door contact switch input is closed (which I did by hand). If the door switches or wiring from them to MICU are bad, the doors will not lock. This is where I would start on your vehicle if I had it in shop. I would check for proper operation of switches at all doors and see if I can verify proper operation of them either through scan tool, interior lights or locks themselves. I would not fire more parts at it until I could find the problem. Good luck with the repair.
Teacher my Honda Civic 2004. When come winter ❄️. 4 actuator door lock no working in the morning. Only in winter. Maybe. Need 4 new actuator door lock. Tanks

Thanks, I review it and I hope to solve it, greetings
Need help, same car. But I can't manually lock or unlock the rear door lock. It won't move. I can't open the door panel because I can't open the door. The lock won't unlock.
Sometimes the lock mechanisms or the latches will seize in place and they can be a bear to get undone. I would start by removing the door handle like I showed at around 6:30 in the video and try to work the lock rod and door hand rod back and forth. In situations like that I will sometimes lower window and spray penetrating oil down towards lock and latch rods and mechanisms. Sometimes damaging the door components is the only way they get fixed.
Is it possible to install a manual crank assembly. I hate power accessories
I'm pretty sure it could be done, but you would probably have to replace too many parts to be worth it.
Would this be the same process, for a 2000 Honda Civic ?

My doors actuators just got replaced and now my lock seems to have power but seems like its stuck? 2001 civic.
Double check work, especially the door lock knob that pokes out of the top of the door panel, they can get jammed during reinstall and do what you are describing.
My 2001 civic door lock just makes noise??? But none of the locks gos up or down?????
A test light at one of the door locks that aren't working is where I would start.
Hey mine does the same thing, what was the problem and how did you fix it??
I didn't fix it I ended up selling it
@@memphistenn77 oh alright 👌🏽
I have an 03 civic sedan manual trans, I replaced the driver side actuator OEM from Honda.
Fuse for door locks in engine bay is fine. Yet, all doors only unlock from both key fobs but will not lock.
When sitting in the car with all doors closed, all doors lock if I manually push down the door stud.
The unlock/lock switch on the door handle only unlocks all doors. Same as the key fobs
So now I have a spare actuator but no solution.
Tanks
It could be several things, needs to be tested when they are not working to confirm what is failing.
I have this exact problem on the same door on my 02 civic lx sedan
Pretty common on Hondas.
Big Dog50001 Automotive thanks for the video helped me out a lot and I did this today and it worked. No more having to unlock the door from the inside to get it to open which I hated doing
