I dont know how many times i wachted this video about the last three weeks. Tomorrow Im getting my lotus elise and instead of watching the video I can finally drive it. Im really excited about it.
fragstarlars that's the nicest compliment i've received so far! enjoy the Lotus! they are truely special. I crashed mine in belgium last friday.. it's fixable but quite a shock for me of course. Watch my newest video if you want to see what happend. And also take it as a warning. Carefully build up your driving experience with the Lotus!
I saw the video and felt realy bad for you, but at least you didnt get hurt. I will definitely take it as a warning to take it easy at the beginning. I hope your lotus will be fixed soon so you can enjoy the pleasure of driving it as soon as possible. looking forward to see new videos...
Congrats on your Elise! 11 years of daily driving mine and countless track days and I'm still not tired of it. Cars shouldn't just get us from point A to point B; they can get us from boredom to joy. A Lotus can do that in under five seconds.
1) I love it 2) It's my favorite Car 3) I wanted it since i bought it on nfs Carbon 4) It's amazing 5) it's beautiful Why I don't have one already: 1) If I buy one I won't eat for at least two years
Lotus nails the recipe of ultimate driving fun: Small, less than a thousand kg of weight, stick shift and mid-engine. A modern car with the dimensions, weight and simplicity of an old school warrior. Respect for Lotus.
Excellent video! Thank you. While I already have a 495 HP "sports car", it weighs over a thousand pounds more than the Elise. At under 1800 lbs., the Elise is pure magic, regardless of horsepower! I'm on the hunt for one now.
This is one of the most amusing and accurate videos I have watched. The secret with Lotus is preventative maintenance . I have a 1969 Europa S2 ( a little wider inside) and it was my daily driver for 8 years and I still have it 48 years later. If you "feel" the car and understand it, they are a keeper. Great video, thank you.
The Lotus Exige, Mazda Miata, Toyota Supra, mazda RX... These are all cars that have demonstrated a purist perspective in motorsports. Honestly the reason why they are not seen much on the road is because people dont care, but they belong in the perfect world and people know it.
I've owned two Mazda RX7s and absolutely loved them both. The second one was a 1993 model with twin sequential turbos... factory stated 0-60 in 4.9 sec... unbeatable! Wish I still had it. But yes, I would LOVE to have a Lotus Elise.
I'm planning on getting one of these, or an Exige from the same series eventually, and I've been watching way too many Elise/Exige reviews over the last few days. One of the main things that has been consistent across all of them is the grin on the face of the driver. It's only made me want one even more.
I can relate to where The Gentleman is coming from. The most fun to drive car I've owned was an '87 Toyota MR-2. Strictly a mid-engine two seater, it was the first car I bought strictly for my use. No hauling groceries or kids to school. The winding roads of the near by Texas Hill Country were my playground with that car.
People say I won't get this car, that I won't be successful enough to get it, that the day I get behind the wheel of my own Lotus Elise will be when pigs fly. Well I'm coming for you Elise, despite what others say, give me 2 years (I will return to this video in 2 years for an update)
Congrats on your Elise, I own an Evora, which I love, but the Elise is also a very beautiful and fun car as well!! Very Fun video, it reflects your Joy of owning it. Enjoy it.
Personally, I'd put "The Cornering" in my top five. And I have no complaints about the seats (Probax seats were introduced in about 2005). But well done, sir. Top effort.
David White there aren't any good driving roads in the netherlands. it's all flat and straight. but i'm taking the banana to the ardens in belgium this sunday! i'll be making a video about that of course, so lots of cornering coming real soon!
Just bought an S2 Elise, will have it in three/four weeks after a complete service will be completed... Agree to all you said Mr Gentleman, specially about the thing that you feel special in a Lotus 😉
Je hebt dezelfde motor als in mijn MGF Trophy 160 zit. MEMS 3 ECU. Er zijn nog wel verbeteringen toe te passen om hem sneller te maken en met meer torque. Stage 1 & 2 ECU remap bijvoorbeeld.
The seats are not bad at all. I did many times more than 1000km in one day. The seats don't give you back pain. Even my girlfriend likes to travel with it. When we go on holiday to Spain, we just drive by Switzerland and take on all the mountain passes just for fun. It's a huge bypass, but with a Lotus you drive until the gas tank is empty. You fill it up and drive again until it's empty. It's the most fun car that exist. I own an Esprit, Exige and a tuned Opel Speedster turbo. The Speedster by the way is the best Elise. A lot more power for the same fun as an Elise. I love it. I drive with a lot of Porsches to, but they are just boring, transport only from A to B. Lotus offers better looks and more pure driving experience
here in the netherlands it's around 15.000 for a cheap one. if you want an elise with a toyota engine you're looking at around 22.000 right hand drive. left hand drive models are starting at 25.000 with the rover engine like mine has. and around 30.000 with a toyota engine. but those are just the prices in the netherlands. in the UK you can get one alot cheaper and just convert if to left hand drive. Also, the UK has alot more Lotus cars to offer in general. They are quite rare over here in the netherlands!
Right portion of british humor... whether or not, in my opinion you got the point and these are the correct 5 reasons. By the way: the Rover K is the same I got in the Cat - if you look after it and take care, it is a fun buddy (and can be relieable, if it wants to 😉)
I bought it used in 1964 and sold it to a Lotus dealer in 2005, so 41-42 years. Tho I loved the car, during the years I drove it I learned to always have warm clothes and be prepared for a walk.
@@jbg43 Wow! That must be getting on for a record! 42 years is an incredible length of time to own the same car. You must have mixed feelings about letting her go, I mean apart from emotional attachment it's only going one way in value. Did you buy another Lotus to replace her?
I have an Elise MK2, '01 (one of the first and with a tuned K series engine) . I love it and will not part with it but even though mine weighs about 750kg it feels so slow. Measured horsepower is 148bhp which is nothing for this car. Only torque you have is at about 3000-3500rpm and then you get a micro burst. Also it does on average 1 liter per 8 km. For winter time I have a 1.8 liter Audi TT (2010) and it blows the Elise from the scale on all aspects except fun. The Lotus you drive with a smile even though it is from petrol station to petrol station. I can honestly say the car is absolute shit, but I love it and it will be my daily driver even when I transition it into electric. (no idea when that will be affordable)
I drive an 02 everyday, well it is my everyday car and I go out as often as possible. It makes me smile every time, even the logistics of getting a full shopping trolley of stuff into it can be fun. Economy I get 6.4 litres per 100 kms, 225 miles for a tank just going into reserve, costs 40 euros to fill up, cheap parts, fantastic on a decent road, frun on a mountain road. I honestly can't imagine owning a better car at the moment, glad it's not to powerful, or I would be losing my licence soon
Porsche don't piss pants at 5 seconds my friend. The majority of Porsches will hit 60 in under 4 seconds. Oh btw I'm no Porsche fanboy I love Lotus and have an mg
Because it's a 1970's TV detective intro, and a gentleman detective does everything as smooth as silk. in reality though i sort of fell in over the seals. Luckely that's off camera. It is quite a challenge at first to get in when you're new to the car. But after a while you get a natural flow and you just slide in like it's nothing!
That's why I asked :-) I know the car and when you find a way to get in it's quite easy. Great video and great review, really funny, and lots of truths about lotus. Enjoy your car and keep going. Thanks for your work
Thank you! I could have gone in further detail about certain things and the elise itself. But the fundemental facts are all in there. There will be much more content with the banana in the near future!
Yeah so here in Canada it makes no sense to buy 5x for a used Elise vs a Miata. if buying a new MX5 you have to still spend 2x more for a used say 2007 Elise..wow in Europe they are way cheaper
I was looking at a list of Toyotas 10 best engines and they have many of them. On the top of the list was the 2zz engine. Ur right it is a work of art between Toyota and Yamaha. At least you know reliability will be great from this engine but the rest of the car.
I don't know i like to drive and I can appreciate the Collin Chapman spirit in the car but at the same time it freaks me out. I may be slightly biased but I seriously believe the S2 is the best looking of the S1, S2 and S3.

Why don't lotus owners understand that getting a removable steering wheel is essential if you plan on leaving the top on lol
I’d assume cause they want airbags just in case
