Passages

Passages composed by Michael Sweeney
In this work for band, dark and rich sonorities are contrasted with a lilting, Celtic-flavored melody as it alternates with striking "passages" from the brass. An alto sax soloist later adds a haunting quality to the mood, followed by a return of the ethnic and lively drumming heard earlier. This unique and rewarding composition is beautifully paced and skillfully orchestrated, using every section of the band.

My high school wind ensemble played this last year and it is an absolutely beautiful piece and the chords are truly colorful and full of character

He played alto sax in the band. Michael Sweeney wrote this in his honor. It was named "Passages" to remember his passage to heaven. The alto sax solos are representing this child and what he loved to do, which was play music.

this was one of the pieces that a summer band program I was in played this year. it wasn't too challenging, but it was very beautiful, and had some really fun melodies. the sax solo was played on bassoon, but it sounded just as amazing played that way.
