Hi fabulous friends. I hope you are all doing well. I hope you like this style tutorial, packed with ways on how to make the very best of those of us who have pear-shapes with curvy hips and thighs. As always, please do comment - I always love to hear from you. Lots of love. Deirdre. XX
Such a great video I have a large chest and hips I am so glad you are addressing these areas it becomes very hard to look Like you do when I am such a different size so thank you for the great information I am 5’ 4” like you except my size is 16…thank you much appreciated ❤❤
Love your videos, advice and today, I particularly admired your crepe leopard print top. Unfortunately I am having a problem trying to source it or a similar one in Australia. I will keep trying. Thank you again from "down under" 🇦🇺
I appreciate your videos❤ I lost my grown Son a year mid july😢 I am in therapy and doing good, I find gently used clothing and put things together which is therapy, I am always getting comments and compliments on my style, I love colors and natural fabrics and details 🎉been blessed to create and sell to shops. Helps with the grief ❤I love your helpful hints
Hi Deborah. I'm so so sorry to hear about your son. Please accept my condolences. Doing something practical, which also means you will look fabulous, is a great strategy. Lots of love. XX
I am English but live and work in wonderful Italy where the people are well dressed.Your tips are useful however a video about you and your life would be interesting as I tend to follow Italian dress style more.
I’m very short, since menopause any temp over 70F is excruciating, and I’d never wear capris. I’ve never seen a pair that doesn’t make even the skinniest Asian lady look like her calves are humongous. Skorts and split skirts are in this summer. Costco had an entire table of them last week. That might help? I wear Thai pants in the summer, ever since it hit 106 here a few years ago. The fabric is like having your own personal body air conditioner.
Hi Deirdre ! I have been watching your videos for quite a while now. I was wondering if you could make a video on what to wear & what to avoid wearing if you have broad shoulders. Thank you so much for all your expertise in fashion! Monique from Canada.
Hi Monique. I am thinking of doing a video on inverted triangles (i.e. broad shouldered ladies) . I have this shape myself so I am planning it now!! I hope this will help. XX
Lovely and very to the point video. In winters I like to wear closed necks and not v shape (which is better for my body type) how can I style the closed necks tops. I am assuming with scarves and neck pieces. Mostly my clothes are shades of black, cream white which colored scarves will go well with such colors? Thanks Subscribed!
Excellent video. I love that you explained why things did or didn’t work in depth. My tip for wide leg trousers is to look for “flat-fronted”. Unfortunately, the wide leg trousers that are “in” at the moment have pleats from the waistband which give a baggy look and make the hips and tummy look bigger.
Deirdre you always knock it out of the park every time. Thank you for such a wonderful video. I love bright colors and love the bright blue cardigan. You give us the best advice on how to our best. Have a wonderful week. Bushel of hugs. Mom says hi Blessings Hugs Love Victoria ❤️❤️❤️
Always got compliments on my pants when I was in my 20s and 30s. I would shop the sales rack and buy quality pants in large and then take them to my tailor. He said the same thing you did. "As long as the pants fit well in the hips and thighs, they can be taken in at the waist. " I was a small waisted curvy girl, so this worked great. For future videos, would love your take on cargo pants. 😊
I love you videos and this one was most helpful. I just have a question -I am pear shaped but I live in a warm climate all year -what should I wear instead of capris? Thank you.
I think you can wear a pencil skirt as long as its a good fit ( rather than a tight fit), preferably just below the knee and good fabric. Cheap stretchy material definitely doesn't work on me. Wrap skirts or mock wrap also suit me, especially if they have a frilled or draped curved hem. I bought a faux leather Ted Baker mock wrap pencil skirt which I wore with a plain white shirt. Totally out of my comfort zone but it looks great. Never owned a white shirt before I watched your video. The pink shirt you wore a few videos ago didn't fit me properly, but I loved the colour so I'm on the lookout for a similar coloured one. 'A' line skirts make me look bigger as I'm short unless they are on the knee or just above. However I'm going to try on a calf length pleated skirt & see what that looks like after you mentioned in your tips. I normally don't wear long skirts or pleated skirts as I'm short but I think the finer material might work.
Thank you for a great vlog.If only I was alittle taller ,I can't wear heels as I have a dodgy knee or pointed toes as i have wide feet ,but I take on board all your other clothing tips for a curvy figure.Have a great week.x.
Yes! You got it right. I'm a pear shape and all the things you named for a pear shape that don't look good, don't look good on me. Thank you for this info. 😊
I came across your channel and subscribe right after the first video 😊 I just had my 58th BD… aging hits harder, I gained weight 😣 and do not bother to go for any harsh diets, and any hormonal treatments, I know it will not work 😕, I’m a biochemist by education … so it’s the only way - to accept aging. I’m size L now and change all my habits about outfits… Your advice works for real women, real shapes, real 50+ , not touched by plastic surgery and photoshop 😂 Thank you for NOT recommending to tuck sweaters and shirts on front 🙇♀️ Somehow it’s a trend but I rarely see it working for anybody bigger than size XS… and even in size XS , like my daughter, it makes her athletic figure not that perfect as she is 🙄 she never uses this trick, she prefers crop tops 😏
I only discovered your channel recently and I love it. As a result I’ve rediscovered H&M where I hadn’t been in years. The only issue is it’s costing me a fortune as I keep seeing you wearing things I like and going and buying them 😂
I'd say the off the shoulder tops create a sense of more width. It moves the eye horizontally rather than vertically. But otherwise, great tips. (Also, I like a sheath or shift style dress.)
Great video Deidre. What a tour de force - thank you for all of the hard work you have put into creating this super-informative video, packed with so many well thought out tips for slimming down those more troublesome areas! Hope you don't mind my asking, but how is the glamorous little Mlle Chanel? We haven't seen her royal pawsomeness lately and I do hope that she is well. xx
Hi Margaret and thank you so much for your lovely comments. I have to admit I do work hard to produce the best content and advice that I can for my lovely UA-cam friends, so thank you. I have told Mlle Chanel that you have asked after her. She graciously extended a fluffy white paw as I curtseyed before her and has asked that I thank you for your good wishes. She has said that she will consider appearing soon for her adoring followers!! XX
Hi Margaret, Message from the cameraman...Chanel "nearly" made an appearance in today's short....but she got VERY grumpy when I brushed her in preparation
Wonderful - hoping that she will honour us all with her presence soon! Thank you so much, and it's lovely to know that La Chanel was simply taking a little time out from her hectic schedule. xx
Thank you Deirdre. Great video albeit hips/thighs not an issue pour moi. Midriff my issue😜 at 5’ hv to behave w/my diet & limit my wine intake😉. Again thank you.
Hi, love ur tips..I've always worn shoulder pads, always, without makes the clothing look bad..I have small shoulders..where do you buy them now?? Love
Thank you Deirdre, I have been loving your channel and your styling idea are so chic and classic. So glad you decided to include us pear shaped women. Great advice for us curvy girls. Even though I live in Australia and our seasons are opposite, I still find your videos so valuable and also gives me a sneek peek of what will be coming to our shores in the comming months!
Hi What brand were the silicone shoulder pads shown in the video? Your videos are very informative and your outfits are always put together very stylishly.
Hi dear friend. Love the blouse you wear. Now, I have an authentic Hermes scarv , the keys, and dont know how to wear it. It is fairly large. Any suggestions?
Thanks for your styling advice! I enjoyed your video about hiding big hips and thighs but I can’t follow all the tips because I’m very busty. I embrace a v neck but too much embellishment up top makes me look huge. What to do?
Hi MBH I’m thinking of doing a video about busty body shapes. I appreciate that everyone is a different shape and only some of the tips will work for each person. Thanks for watching. Xx
Skinny jeans, capris, and pants that end right above the ankle are completely out. Capris make your calves look gigantic and “ankle skimming” pants length makes everyone look like they have cankles. Pointed toe shoes are completely out now, too. Palazzo pants and skirts are going to be a godsend in hot weather. As a goalie with 25” circumference thighs, I find anything athletic or Chanel classic looks great.
Hi Deirdre..I just found your channel new sub here!! Your advice is mostly for 50 and above year old women.. I'm actually only 37 and i have a mid size curvy body.. I really love your outfit ideas tho they are very chic, classy and classic!! Eventho I am alot younger I would definitely wear most of what you advise to wear lol.. I've always dressed older than I am..so thank u for everything you do!! 🥰👗
Hi Stephanie and welcome to my channel. To be honest, although my advice is generally for 50+ women, as you say, I have a lot of followers who are younger (and older too) as style isn't something with a cut-off date. It's what makes you look and feel your best that matters. Lots of love. XX
Deidra, after listening to your video I’m a little confused I thought horizontal stripes made you look bigger that we should wear vertical stripes to make us look taller especially if you are 5’3”weigh 150lbs, bust 38C. It’s hard for me to wear horizontal or printed/floral tops. I feel like I look bigger. Could you please address this. You mentioned capri pants and your not fond of. I can’t wait to hear this topic. I just bought 3 pair! I’m leaving the tags on to make a return. Your amazing with all your tips. USA Fl Sunshine Girl
HI LInda. Thanks for your question and comment. I think that what suits each person varies a lot according to each person's individual shape. What I meant when I said that horizontal stripes were good for some ladies with curvy hips, is that, it CAN balance out upper body to be more aligned with the lower part. So, I was referring to balance really. Of course, height makes a difference too and I appreciate that horizontal stripes may not be suitable for you. I really hope this has helped. XX
Thank you for this Deirdre, just my shaping, all the ladies in my family are pear shape! I better go through my wardrobe and get rid of the white jeans and skinny jeans. I love skinnies in boots though!! Have a fabulous week x
Hi Debs. Curvy pear-shaped ladies are always very sensual, so you and your family are really lucky. I think skinnies definitely have their place - especially in boots! Have a lovely week too! XX
If you wear white jeans, the recommendation is to go up one size, have them tailored, & wear light or white on top. Also, wear a hip length jacket or cardigan or ruana. Oh, & wear heels to lengthen the legs.
Hi Deirdre, I asked a question and a French Chic lady responded....weird! Anyway, you mentioned in a video about a year ago, that you would be doing your holiday Ski trip video. I couldn't find it anywhere. Can you help?
Hi Debby. How strange!! I wonder what she was doing on my channel!! Anyway, apologies but I didn’t manage to go skiing in the end. We planned to go but couldn’t in the end because the French government announced 48 hours before we were due to go, that they wouldn’t allow British people into the country due to Covid. Xx
I remember an Oprah episode where the stylists recommended A line skirts and went shopping for a few but found only one in the whole mall. If they aren’t trending you may not find certain silhouettes in the shops. Try second hand for more selection. Soon all the jeans will be low cut….the absolute worst on we who have hips and saddlebag thighs.
I found your channel about two months ago and have really enjoyed watching. Could you do a video on rectangle shapes? I have larger shoulders with not a lot of natural waist definition. How can I create waist definition in the way I dress? Also should I be wearing shoulders pads with large shoulders?
Hi Yael and a big welcome to my channel. I have a video to answer exactly your questions about being a rectangle with minimal waist definition very soon!! Xx
The only thing I disagree with is the bootcut pants. Flairy pants maybe, but Bootcut look absolutely rediculous on me. Maybe I am too short to rock them, I don't know. I love my skinny jeans though, so no matter what anybody tells me, I have came to a good way to style them by wearing a shorter jacket for instance and a to that stops just in the mid hip area.
I love scarves too, I must have 50 or more silk ones. I also wear updos w my hair or the hair bump to draw attention away from my “ mommy stomach “ I had twins 26 yrs ago and it’s still there!
I am only 5' 1 1/2" and pear -shaped. I have narrrow shoulders and small up top. Like "A" cup. So wearing a busy pattern tops and horizontal stripes are not good for short women because they make you appear even shorter. I have to stay away from overly ruruffled busy large patterns for my blouses. Being short is the problem, so some of the tops you mentioned are fine for average and tall women but not short women especially under 5' 2" Not only do I have the pear shape but many of the tops you spoke about to wear are too much volume, horizontal stripes, etc don't help the short woman. I love but also hate shopping for clothes. The girl's dept.clothes at my stores don't fit either because even though the length of trousers are shorter, they won't fit in the hips and waist because they are for designed for (girls/preteen.)
Love these ideas! Wish I had know this years ago! Brilliant! I must be too short because I buy palazzo pants but they look ridiculous on me and I never end up wearing them!
Hi Sunnydreamer. I totally understand where you are coming from. I love palazzo pants but, at 5'4", I feel a little too short to make them work. I can wear wide leg trousers if they are flowy and if I style them with a tighter-fitting top. XX
Boot cut trousers and A-line skirks are my best friends since I'm heavier on hips and thighs. So right about pointed shoes!!!. Great video, thank you!!!! PS: we want more!!!
Apologies, I didn’t specify. In the context I was talking about, I would say that wide leg trousers are hard to wear if you are 5’2” or under unless you style them very carefully. I hope this clarifies xx
I wouldnt wear an a lline skirt it makes me look bigger, I prefer a pencil skirt. Also I have a small waist compared to my hips and i always find it hard to find trousers and skirts to fit my waist and hips. normally i have a gap at the back. The other issue is they are too big on the tops of my legs.
Could you please make a similar video for us non-curvy types? I’m shaped like a column, my shoulders, bust, waist and hips are all quite close to the small measurement, and my hips and thighs are skinny. My biggest problem is finding bottoms that will close at my thicker waist, but don’t slide down off my skinny hips. I have to wear elastic waists to keep bottoms up, and never found a non-elasticized waist pair of trousers or jeans that fit me, in 50 years of looking and wasting money. I can’t wear all-over stretch pants, either, as the friction over my long hips and legs tends to pull them down. People keep telling me that I should wear jeans because “they’re so comfortable”, but having to hold them up with both hands is not my idea of comfy or effortless. (Any pants I buy that will close at the waist will be 8-10 inches too big in the hips, they look like clown pants). My torso is short above the waist, so I don’t have the vertical space for a waist indent, but long below it, thanks!
I hear you, Kimberly and I understand. I'm a little similar although more of an inverted triangle than you describe yourself as being. I used to be more of a column but then thickened up in middle age. I think you are so lucky that you are slim! I suggest that when you buy pants, you buy them for the hip and thigh fit and then just get them altered for your waist. The proportions will be better that way. XX
Apologies, Barbie. I will tell my production team off and dock their pay!!! Actually, I think you are referring to when I touch the phone. If so, I will try not to do it quite as enthusiastically again! XX
Great video! Need more on disguising hips and thighs
What I like about your presentations is they are DIRECT, to the point, fast, and intelligent. Looking forward to more.
That’s really kind of you, thank you Sydney xx
Hello Deirdre. I was wondering if you could create a video giving us SHORT 5’ curvy ladies some of your great tips. It would be so appreciated.
It's in the planning, Judy! Thanks for the suggestion. XX

Great advice for the pears among us!
Brilliant glad to see I'm doing some things right but lots to learn😊
Wonderful! Thank you.
Very well done! You did a great job, many thanks.😊 As an hourglass, I can suggest wear fabrics that have structure, not knits.
You nailed it!!!! I have also found that being full figured I look more polished in outfits that are dressy and not as casual... for me anyway 😊
Hi Mimi. That's a great and really important point, and thank you for pointing it out. Take care. XX
Such a great video I have a large chest and hips I am so glad you are addressing these areas it becomes very hard to look Like you do when I am such a different size so thank you for the great information I am 5’ 4” like you except my size is 16…thank you much appreciated ❤❤

Xx
@@50FabulouswithMyFriendDeirdre Oh, ok, that explains why I couldn't find it. Sorry you missed your ski holiday!
I totally agree with you about low cut jeans, Mary. Not good for many body shapes. XX
Good reminders. Thank you. Be well, Gloria
I love scarves too, I must have 50 or more silk ones. I also wear updos w my hair or the hair bump to draw attention away from my “ mommy stomach “ I had twins 26 yrs ago and it’s still there!
I have anput the same number of silk scarves, too, I love them🙂
I am only 5' 1 1/2" and pear -shaped.
I agree. Everyone has differences and shorter ladies have the issues you have mentioned. XX
I love wide leg pants. I am 5 ft 3. Am I too short for them? I have been wearing them
No, I think if you feel comfortable and happy in them, go for it. 5'3" is not too short!! XX
@@50FabulouswithMyFriendDeirdre Thank you so much! I also try to wear a heeled shoe or platform sneaker with them.
Excellent advice ❤
Love these ideas! Wish I had know this years ago! Brilliant! I must be too short because I buy palazzo pants but they look ridiculous on me and I never end up wearing them!
Hi Sunnydreamer. I totally understand where you are coming from. I love palazzo pants but, at 5'4", I feel a little too short to make them work. I can wear wide leg trousers if they are flowy and if I style them with a tighter-fitting top. XX
Love to you !!!
And to you darling. XX
Although this isn’t my personal figure problem Deirdre……I’m an apple shape….but I still loved it. 🌸
Some great tips 🙂
Boot cut trousers and A-line skirks are my best friends since I'm heavier on hips and thighs. So right about pointed shoes!!!. Great video, thank you!!!!
PS: we want more!!!
Thank you so much, Olga and I'm glad it helps. Take care. XX
What is too short?
Apologies, I didn’t specify. In the context I was talking about, I would say that wide leg trousers are hard to wear if you are 5’2” or under unless you style them very carefully. I hope this clarifies xx
I wouldnt wear an a lline skirt it makes me look bigger, I prefer a pencil skirt. Also I have a small waist compared to my hips and i always find it hard to find trousers and skirts to fit my waist and hips. normally i have a gap at the back. The other issue is they are too big on the tops of my legs.
Hi Anna. As I mentioned in the video, it's a good idea to have a tailor take in that gap at the back which you refer to, so that the hips fit well. XX
XX
That's Angela Bassett? I remember she was skinny when she was in that Tina Turner movie.
Long torso makes high waist tough
This information is all very well but your examples seem to be on size 10-12 not realistic at all.
Ooo, can you stabilize that phone? It’s distracting bad feng shue.
Apologies, Barbie. I will tell my production team off and dock their pay!!! Actually, I think you are referring to when I touch the phone. If so, I will try not to do it quite as enthusiastically again! XX
What is considered short and too short.
Hi Laurel-Anne. Nothing is "too short" as such. It's just a matter of styling to take account of what looks right. XX
