as a beginner who was only taught how to operate a machine years ago by my grandma this series is so comforting and helpful!! thank you for this ❤️ i wish you could host classes or virtual workshops
I always struggle to decide what to put on in the background while I sew, and ever since I found your channel it’s been your videos! I love listening to you chat about sewing, it’s so soothing
I turned on my UA-cam notifications for the first time in my life to be notified when this video dropped! I’m brand new to sewing and am hanging on your every word! 😂❤️ thank you so much for doing this!!!! You make it all so approachable (I’m not traditionally crafty or into hobbies of any sort lol) but I can’t tell you how excited I am to be consuming all of this and actually understanding what you’re explaining!!
Sydney, this series is SO helpful. I would seriously have paid for this “course”. I am planning on purchasing all of your patterns when I have the $$$! I have a question - do the pattern pieces - the paper - include seam allowance? If I cut out the paper pattern on my size, does that line I cut along include seam allowance? Sorry if this is a silly question. Thanks for all the great info! ❤
All of my patterns have seam allowance included! And all patterns I've ever used do as well. But I get this question occasionally, so it makes me wonder if there are patterns out there that don't? Or maybe in the past seam allowance wasn't included? Not 100% sure!
This video series is amazing! I feel ready to sew my first pattern and I happen to have the same machine as you. You're a joy to watch, too. Pattern is from Sew House Seven...a good one not on your list!
Not me extremely excited when you said you might possibly release your kids patterns! I would love a kids ruby vest! Some how I feel like kids sizes would be easier cause everything is smaller!❤
Thank you ! I’m a beginner sewer, and didn’t even know how to begin approaching the subject of sizing, in patterns. Love your content, it helps me a lot.
Love this! As someone who recently got a projector for sewing, I just wanted to make a plug that it doesn’t need to be time consuming for calibration! There are a couple new tools that make calibration a BREEZE and I only spend ~5 minutes to set everything up for cutting. I don’t have a dedicated sewing space and still think the projector has been such a game changer. My printed patterns had gotten so unwieldy!
please tell me, which CAD or program do you use to create a pattern on your computer? I do not know where to start creat patterns on a computer and doing gradation 🫣
I noticed you were cutting the paper pattern with a rotary cutter. This feels like such a silly question but I'm very familiar with the "don't use your fabric scissors for paper" rule, but does this extend to rotary cutters too??? Do you have a separate one for patterns vs fabric or is it actually fine? P.s I'd call myself a 'far too confident for my skill level' beginner and love that these videos are so in depth and easy to follow 😊
Great question! I use my rotary cutter for cutting paper fairly often, and I'm sure there is a "rule" that you shouldn't haha. I am admittedly pretty lax with things like that - but I haven't run into any glaring issues so I just do what I want! My rotary blades last 4-6 months before getting noticeably dull. Works for me but to each their own!
I have a question about seam allowances in sewing patterns. Are they always included/added or do some patterns omit them? And how do I know the width of the seam allowance if it's already included in the pattern's cutting lines?
From my understanding, almost all modern sewing patterns include seam allowances in the pattern pieces. In my patterns, I clearly state seam allowance in multiple places in the instructions, including a page titled the "Seam Allowance Cheat Sheet," which is a labeled diagram of every pattern piece. Every pattern maker is different, of course, but they will list the seam allowance somewhere in the instructions!

Yayyy!! I love to hear that - thank you for the insight!
You might consider adding a sticky tab on the top of your Manila envelope to label like the folder tabs :)
Thank you for so many helpful tips!!

Cool video! Do you know where I can find a culotte sewing pattern?

Would love to know about the beautiful wall art you have behind you...!
It's a quilt that I improvised using scrap fabrics in my stash! I have a more in depth video on the process on my TikTok a few months back.
