    Lyrics:
I had this dream where I relished the fray
And the screaming filled my head all day
It was as though I'd been spit here
    Settled in, into the pocket
Of a lighthouse on some rocky socket
Off the coast of France, dear
One afternoon four thousand men died in the water here
And five hundred more were thrashing madly
As parasites might in your blood
Now I was in a lifeboat designed for ten and ten only
Anything that systematic would get you hated
It's not a deal nor a test nor a love of something fated
The selection was quick, the crew was picked in order
And those left in the water
Got kicked off our pant leg
    And we headed for home
Then the dream ends when the phone rings
    "You doing all right?"
He said, "It's out there most days and nights
But only a fool would complain"
    Anyway, Susan, if you like
Our conversation is as faint a sound in my memory
As those fingernails scratching on my hull

Someone may disagree, but this song should be considered one of their masterpieces. Gord's ability to tell the story, his intensity and passion sells it. And not to take anything away from the rest of the band, the layering sounds of the guitars just lends to the emotion of the song, making it haunting and heart-wrenching. It will always be one of my favorites.

This is a great take. I love the sea shanty like feel, both musically and narratively, of this song. It has a cyclical feel that aggravates the listener with its avoidance of resolution - at least until its end - which is its point. Happy endings are not truth. Which is why I love it.

There are so many things I love about this song. I love how it ebbs and swells like the ocean itself along with Gord's singing. I love that it has no chorus. I just heard this song for the first time after searching for it for probably 30 years.
i remember seeing this video about a 3rd in on mtv before my dad sent me to bed.
i asked if i could watch the rest of this song he said no. Its stuck in my head my whole life and ididnt know who the band was or what the song was called.
i spent half an hour again tonight googling drowning men. And cold water and ships sinking finally, to end up here. 😊
Its goes without saying the song was worth the wait. And i remember now why that half a music video all those years ago imprinted on me.

    • @natevm7888

Most people don't know this but Gord Sinclair the bass player was the key individual to forming the basis of so many of their songs that would have never come to be or seen the light of day if it wasn't for him writing the baselines "first" then the rest of the song came from that. Not to take away from the other members because you need all that as well and without Gords haunting lyrics you know when you combine that with everything it just made for a perfect bowl of stew

My favourite concert ever was the hip at the downs that night. Worked my way to the front by the time the hip started. The skies opened up and delivered a deluge from the heavens while the hip pounded through their sets. Against the front row railing I made out with an amazing and beautiful girl whose presence I had not experienced before or since while a soaked Gord and the boys splashed through the puddles onstage. How they were not electrocuted or had the concert stopped is a question I have pondered since that evening. I have no expectations of a concert ever providing to me more than 10% of what the hip did for me that night.

Yes, I do. It was supposed to be The Hip's big intro to America and some blame their choice to play this song, which was rather obscure at the time, for them not catching on south of the border. I just re-watched their performance and Sheldon Cooper could have easily subbed in for Gord as far as looks and mannerisms go. LOL

I mostly liked the Hip, maybe kind of off and on, but this is a song I take to my grave. Lyrically and musically as magical and deep as the greatest songs from Neil Young, Springsteen, Joni Mitchell and many other great writers. Everything in it is submerged like a monster from the depths itching to explode. And it blasts your emotions to bits, wondering what motivated its creation, what it is really about. I have to go into recovery mode every time I hear it. A flat out masterpiece of lyrical songwriting. Still an overwhelming listen many years later.

I had this dream where I relished the fray
And the screaming filled my head all day
It was as though I'd been spit here
    Settled in, into the pocket
Of a lighthouse on some rocky socket
Off the coast of France, dear
One afternoon four thousand men died in the water here
And five hundred more were thrashing madly
As parasites might in your blood
Now I was in a lifeboat designed for ten and ten only
Anything that systematic would get you hated
It's not a deal nor a test nor a love of something fated
The selection was quick, the crew was picked in order
And those left in the water
Got kicked off our pant leg
    And we headed for home
Then the dream ends when the phone rings"You doing all right?"
He said, "It's out there most days and nights
But only a fool would complain"
    Anyway, Susan, if you like
Our conversation is as faint a sound in my memory

There's been so many deaths in 2016 I think I'm leaving some out. Well, it's only gonna get worse from here on out: the boomers are starting to drop like flies all around us, and sadly, as ambivalent as I am about the baby boomer's impact on culture, I just don't see a lot of young artists fit to fill the shoes of a Bowie or a Prince.

So, I was stuck at work for the Kingston show. Hooked my phone up to the overhead and started listening, jammed out...then this came on, my very favorite Hip song. I had no choice. Ran back to the phone, and CRANKED the volume, to the point where people down the block could hear it. Whole neighborhood came out to party. I'll never forget it. I'll never forget Gord.

Just came back from juno beach. This song was playing non stop in my head. Tears in my eyes though whole time. Thanks lads there is nothing more more Canadian than the hip except the heroes that landed on Juno on the 6th of June 1944. Heroes i salute you

I heard cleaning the snow off your car with a hockey stick, with the help of one of the Hip is the most Canadien thing ever. I heard that from a Canadian that this actually happened to.

      Was that at Club Dada?

    • @sryburn641
      @sryburn641 3 роки тому +1

@@terryholt4155 nope, it was actually at Edgefest. It was a perfect show, Gord trailing off on a wild tangent about infidelity. The energy was unbelievable.
Ironically, I used to work at club dada. The owners were really good people.
Did they really play club dada? That would be so incredible out on the patio. Cheers.

@@terryholt4155 hey terry, were you at the dada show? if so, can you tell me about it? I can only imagine how intimate that was. Also I saw them at Dallas City Limits around ‘95. Great show. Really cool opening act called Evergreen that closed with a really killer cover of Street Fighting Man. Can’t ever go wrong with the Stones.

Unlike Nickelback, Avril Lavigne, Celine, Shania, David Foster, etc, I think TTH quite actively made the decision *not* to move south. Plus many of their lyrical references are based on obscure Canadian history and geography. ❤eg wth is a corduroy road? 🤓

The first time i heard this song i was like OMG, play that again!!
Playing it on here is one thing, but being in the states but close enough to pick up Toronto radio, i went bonkers yesterday, this song is their masterpiece, i guess it helps i know Susan also.
