I’m 29 and it’s been nearly two years since I’ve cut cable television & mass media out of my life. Now I watch these classic shows & movies as if I’m reminiscing of a past life.
All the oldies channels here in the Miami, FL area are on sub-channels (10-2, 10-3, etc) of the broadcast channels, so no cable is needed. I have DirecTV which only carries the main channels, so they have an option to add an off-air antenna and tuner which allows me to capture the channels directly from the broadcast towers. Unfortunately the "new and improved" DVR can only record two off-air channels simultaneously, where the old DVR could record five. Sometimes it's a challenge to decide which two programs to watch. Each of the oldies channels carry shows from predominately different eras, or genres The truth be told, I watch more of those channels than the current shows, mostly because they are not constantly jamming their politically correct liberal ideals down my throat. They also don't have all the cursing, swearing, and sexually explicit language, as well as no nudity., and explicit sexual encounters. Somehow, Ward and June Cleaver bore two children without ever having sex, as did every TV family of the era.. LOL And, that happened as they slept in separate beds. ROFLMAO
A couple of Leave It To Beaver connections were in this pilot episode. The actress who played Beaver's teacher, Miss Canfield, was the radio dispatcher. Also, the young actor who played Beaver's schoolmate, Charlie Frederick, was the little boy crying on the school bus. Thanks to Foxeema for showing us how this great series first got started!
@@joanngreen7475 Miss Canfield was played by Diane Brewster. She had a recurring role (4 episodes) in Maverick where she played Smantha Crawford a slick con artist who got Bret Maverick into all kinds of trouble and usually ended up cheating him out of his money at the end. It was an interesting contrast to her role as Mis Canfield. here is an interesting bit of trivia, she appeared as Miss Simms in her first appearance in 1957, then as Miss Canfield for 4 more episodes. Her replacement, Miss landers was played by the very cute and darling Sue Randall, who sadly contracted lung cancer and died at the age of 49.
Very solid first episode. Amazing to think this was two years before Raymond Burr as Perry Mason went on the air on CBS. Highway Patrol definitely deserved a lot more credit.
I'm not so sure how brilliant an actor he was, he seems to be the same character all the time, just like John Wayne. He is, however, great to watch, one of the real he-man tough guys that we no longer see on TV and in the movies.

Some of the most brilliant actors, actresses and movies don't win because all sorts of trivial reasons. As for John Wayne, he was the same character in every movie with the same drawl. He was as one dimensional an actor as has ever come out of Hollywood. I enjoy his movies, but his performances are not worthy of an Oscar.
Manuela Hertel I first saw Brodrick Crawford in a 1956 movie titled "The Fastest Gun Alive", Crawford played a fixated gunfighter and his latest intended victim was to be Glenn Ford. Great movie, great acting.
The show's narrator, Art Gilmore, was already a regular in Jack Webb's 'stable' of favorite actors. On "Dragnet", He's played the roles of Captain Didian, Lieutenant (later Captain) Moore and others, and in a switch of departments, a batallion fire chief in "Emergency!" He also became the voice of dozens of major movie trailers in the 1950's and 1960's. He appeared in dozens of other movies and TV shows, but was mostly uncredited or as an off screen voice. RIP Mr. Gilmore.
Art Gilmore got his start as the announcer for DOCTOR CHRISTIAN on the radio. His voice was about an octave higher in that series. Must have taken some hormones or learned how to lower his voice.
Please teleport me back to this time. I would sit on my front porch in my nice little town and read great books and have nice conversations with my intelligent, civilized neighbors. I would enjoy the peace and quiet.
This is the first episode that starts off this most outstanding series. I wasn't even born when this started in '55 so grateful to see these uploaded on UA-cam. Don't even watch regular TV much anymore. Programming is mostly mush. I'm retired now so can enjoy these episodes at my leisure.
Fantastic collection!..I watched this very popular series on TV when it first came out. Love all the old cars from my youth and the story lines with police work never change. The stories themselves are timely and deal with criminal issues that are still problems today. I never realized how educational the series was at the time..
I remember when it was a Shock to hear about a Murder on the News. Now its everyday. What the hell happend to us. I miss the old days. We had some kinda Morals back then.
The 60's happened. All those radicals grew up, became teachers, professors, went into TV and movies, proceeded to brainwash generations that followed them and here we are. Look at Saul Alinsky the terrorist, now an esteemed college professor.

Today, the cable shows all have gratuitous sex and nudity, the emasculation of men, and the constant PC propaganda. I get my morality lessons in church, I watch TV and go to the movies for entertainment, not preaching.
Good morals shouldn't end when you turn on your TV set, good morals should affect every aspect of your life. These days church isn't the character builder is was in the 1950's, churches have become tax-free money makers that judge the poor and homeless instead of welcoming them. Most important of all is your personal relationship with God. Let Him be your ultimate guide, not the church who is subjected to sin just like you and me.

@@saulchapnick1566 I've seen roadblocks here in California when they do sobriety checks and when there's been a bad accident. Crawford was big enough to be a roadblock without a car all by himself.😀 He would have made me pull over if I'd seen him. I watched all of these episodes with my parents when I was a kid & Crawford was formidable and a bit scary. I don't remember if they were re-runs or not. I didn't want to have him mad at me, that's for sure. I am 71 now.
Nor can anyone get phone in tips that lead directly to the criminals in a few minutes like Dan, either. he also has an amazing way of getting information to every party concerned in just a few minutes. That was sarcasm, by the way, even though I love the show, the police work is nowhere near real life.

Virtually all of the outside scenes were filmed on the streets and in the hills of the area surrounding Los Angeles. This show is largely why I would eventually leave the big city for a small town or rural area in which I have lived much of my life. Just never cared for city life. When the 1970s rolled around & I was of driving age, naturally I would buy '50s cars & trucks.
Great! Apparently this was the pilot, or first episode of season one. I saw this series (missing a few for teenage reasons) from the age of 12 and into my teens. This was possibly the first cops series to incorporate police code speech into the scripts -- so much so that we used to imitate Broderick Crawford's terse speech patterns around the house, ending sentences with "10-4?," to which the reply was usually an affirmative, "10-4 !" Yes, the story lines were simplistic, fast paced and often naively adulatory of law enforcement practices as well as miscreant criminal behavior. But the production values were consistently smart and professional. Mmmmm -- love seeing those Olds , Buick and Chevy patrol units along with all the brands out there on those highways and byways, bouncing furiously across potholes long before anyone began to think they were classics. The series cast many excellent actors of the period, but for me, Broderick Crawford himself is the magic factor in every scene.
Oh I'm still lost in the 50s now. House built in 1952 & keeping it as much that way as I can. Hopefully '56 Ford truck will be on the road within a year. Going to be a white one like the one they used in some episodes of Highway Patrol.
I remember watching 'Highway Patrol' in the 1950's in the UK. I loved Broderick Crawford, because he seemed to be the sort of man that would be able to take care of any problems and situations. In my youth, he was my idle. Now, many years later and with the great man gone, I still admire him. A brilliant actor and a wonderful, no political correctness, programme. Ahhhhh..............those were the days!
My father was a highway patrolman here in California specifically SAN DIEGO , he was 6 feet 3 225 pounds of one of the nicest human beings you’d ever meet and didn’t have a bad bone in his body and went out every night on his motorcycle and my mom and I worried to death that he would never come back, he worked the four to midnight shift and hearing the motorcycle pull up at midnight gave the entire family a sigh of relief . And where are these type of men today?
@Black Buick The women who worked the radio were some of the most beautiful they could find. At least one of them was a Playboy Playmate of the Month. Remember that this was fifties, long before the uptight politically correct crowd started denigrating men, and vilifying beautiful women. Back then it was okay to admire a woman's beauty.
This was the pilot, and the only episode backed by the California Highway Patrol. Those are the real CHP uniforms AND cars....'54 Olds Super 88s and '55 Buick "Spec-tury" (Special body with the CHP ordered Century 364" V8). CHP later pulled out of the deal for technical and prop support when they found out about Crawford's suspended license due to a string of DUIs in LA county...that's why the later episodes had cars that the CHP never had.
The opening credits mention the California Highway Patrol, which has been said only appears in this 1955 pilot. The episode numbers as named in this collection don't seem to match the chronological order in which they were actually filmed, if you check the year produced (roman numerals) in the closing credits. Episode "14" is actually early in the series, filmed in 1955, and also credits the California Highway Patrol. Don't get me wrong, I love these old HP episodes and thank Foxeema for uploading them. Haven't seen them since I was a kid. Just makes it a little tricky to follow the evolution of the show.
I also grew up watching these episodes. I was 8 yrs old in '55. TV was still in its infantsy. Many shows reflected positive American values, as corny as it may seem to some today. I miss that time and place when I watch these episodes.
DeserT BoB : This was a Ziv company family film. Cincinnati Ohio. The actor was very hard to work with. Mr. Ziv, stated the show was high in the ratings but the guy was more trouble then one cared to deal with. Mr. Ziv, lived in Cincinnati Ohio, Hyde Park. A very upper class community of Cincinnati. Why can't they bring these good old-fashioned TV shows back again instead of having orders fake news on and junk and stupid shows of people acting like they just came out of a mental institution come on you know it as well as I do these TV shows back in the 40s 50s 60s even the 70s for wonderful we all went to work for 8 hours a day on a bus or Subway if you were lucky you had a car we couldn't wait to come home and have dinner and put the TV on and watch one of these good old-fashioned TV shows I hope they come back soon 🇺🇸😃🍀
Around 1958/9 I watched and loved HP when I was 11/12 at my friends house on Saturday nights (didn't have a tv)...This was in Glasgow, Scotland...Nobody Important is correct, not all ITV areas took it.
Oops! As Nobody Important has so correctly stated, it WAS shown on some UK TV channels way back when. I remember watching Highway Patrol episodes in Nottingham with my dad after he had discovered the programme (he was also into cowboy shows in a big way, too). Just LOVED the 10-code abbreviations, and used them at school on occasions to reply to teachers' requests and questions! Classmates thought I was barmy! Happy days.
Among my boyhood shows. Isa Ashdown, the girl in the schoolbus, also played Mink in the old radio show Zero Hour; and Luxe Radio Theatre. I love watching this show for the set locations of what the surrounding LA area used to look like: beautiful rolling hills, Oak trees, Eucalyptus trees, and those little green spots where you could pick fresh cilantro. Mostly all malls now...
The cop Paul Burke is from the 1950's NYPD police drama Naked City! Another above board show... well written the regular cast and the guest stars all outstanding! As is the Highway Patrol you can tell after watching the first few episodes...that the events depicted most are real! This is a great show, sometimes you know how the story will end, just as some criminals are dumb as door nails! Other times... you don't know which way it's going to go! The story lines have a nice pace, and flow.
Great Episode. In case anyone is not aware, footage from this particular episode which served as the pilot for the show, was used at the beginning and end in all of the introductory credits. I was pleased to see Diane Brewster of “Leave it To Beaver” fame portraying a switchboard operator in the control room. What a classy looking dame she was back then. Too bad they did not offer her a contract as a permanent dispatcher or something, but fortunately she got many other television offers. I like that ’41 two door Oldsmobile that the convict had stolen and was driving. That same car was in another early episode called “Desert Town” of which an elderly doctor drives. Although its got different license plate numbers on it its definitely the same car as it has the same exact paint blemish on the lower back side that can be seen at 8:16 in this episode. I strongly suspect that the car then got a new paint job, as it truly needed one, and then was used again as a two-toned two door ’41 Oldsmobile appears in at least three other HWP episodes. Speaking of cars, that ’54 Mercury which appears at 22:26 and ends up with its right front tire getting shot is a very impressive looking automobile. But just think, if Dan Matthews had arrived at The Golden Pheasant only a minute later that convict and his accomplice would have made a clean getaway in that car - at least until the next HWP roadblock was set up!

But not nearly as rare as the Chrysler 300 which cost the exact same price but of which there were only 1725 sold to the public in that very great year of the American automobile.
I was 16 years old in 1969 and I had a two tone green and white, 1955 buick 2 door hardtop that I paid $75 for it , i would spend hours doing burnouts in that ole buick, driving backwards in reverse and then floor the gas pedal and drop her down in drive and do burnouts after burnouts after burnouts , My friends would hang out the back windows to watch the tires smoking. I tried to kill that car the summer 69. I couldn't do it! I abused it and sold it to my neighbor for 50 bucks, it kept on running . One day me and my 3 buddies skipped high school and we pooled all the money we had in our pockets and come up with 75 cents total, we drove that car all day and all night, all over des Moines , Those were the days my friend. I love the ole highway patrol show , I am thoroughly enjoying them again, thank you.

Thank you I used to get up every morning at 4am for years to watch this and sea hunt with Lloyd Bridges on This TV . They took them both off the Line up . This is great
We have several channels that carry shows from the 50's through the 80's. Three of them are not on cable, they are sub channels of broadcast channels, so I have a standard antenna to pick them up, because DirecTv does not carry the sub channels. Sea Hunt is still on one of them.
I can't believe I found H.P. My dad and I watched this I think once a week. I love how things looked back then.. my grandson and I will no doubt get into this.
The show is fun to watch even though the scenarios are unbelievable. We have the head of the Highway Patrol going out to answer calls for petty crimes, while mobilizing the entire Patrol to throw up roadblocks because Mrs. Jones had a ten cent candy bar stolen from her store (Yes, i'm exaggerating, but not by much). In addition, they broadcast advisories which someone always happens to hear in a few minutes, calls in and gives then the tip to solve the crime within hours of its occurrence. Big fat Dan Matthews WADDLES from hiding place to hiding place as he closes in on armed suspects and is never once hit with a bullet. LOL Don't get me wrong, I like to watch it for the nostalgic value, but it is a thoroughly unrealistic police drama. The opening music is also very dramatic and sets the mood.
Thanks for posting these! Been watching various episodes but hooked now by coming to the pilot. Never watched back in the day so these are all new to me. I like the cars the best. We can go to car shows today and see them parked pretty but watching them nose dive in the turns and when stopping on bias ply tires is a reminder of what it was like to pilot one of those babies. I also like the on-location filming and seeing things that used to be quite common like diner jukeboxes and payphones. For an additional time warp, have iHeartradio '50's playing low while watching.
Roadside gas stations were always known for overcharging as you either paid up or be stuck & the 2nd choice wasn't really an option. Hmm, the first new tires I bought were I think in 1975 & you could still buy bias ply tires, at least the smaller sizes for $24.
I can recall my mother buying ultra low priced nylon tires for her 1958 Ford at Montgomery Ward,where she worked in 1964 for about $9 or $10 apiece. I remember how they would develop a flat spot after being parked for more than 9 or 10 hours...
I remember Pepboys in Santa Ana, Ca., 1960. Alcoholic Papa always bought new tires there and a oil change. I loved looking at the new "stingray" bicycles. And that rubbery smell and the whirring sound in the tire bays...

The late Broderick Crawford was one of America's favorite "tough-guy" actors. His characterization of HP chief Dan Matthews was the main reason for the series' success.
Well written episode; good start for a great series. Diane Brewster had a long career after this. She had a recurring role as a beautiful conwoman Samantha Crawford who matched wits with James Garner several times in "Maverick". She played the part so well she even played the same character in an episode of "Cheyenne"! She did get a shot at movies in 1958-59. I was surprised to see Paul Burke in a tiny part since he was already an established actor by the time "Highway Patrol" aired. In 1955 alone he appeared in 7 other roles besides "Highway Patrol". He had a much bigger part the same year in an episode of "The Lone Ranger". he went on to star in a couple of hit TV shows "Naked City" and "12 O:Clock High".
Great episode, I love this TV series for all of its quirkiness and dramatic music and many other things. This first episode, "Prison Break," originally aired on televisions October 3, 1955, 67 years ago from typing this comment. This show was a true window with a look into 1950's America, the good and the bad.

The most tragic real shooting of CHP officers occured at the Tip's restaurant in Newhall about 1970. 4 Highway Patrolman were shot and killed at that restaurant. I ate breakfast at that same restaurant in the morning before this tragic incident occured that same evening. My uncle was building Magic Mountain at the time, and that was the closest restaurant to Magic Mountain (under construction at the time--didn't open until May 28, 1971). The hat in my pic was was my uncle's hardhat that he wore while on the worksite at Magic Mountain, with the original Magic Mountain logo depicted, which my cousin designed.
In 1978 two CHP officers were killed in West Sacramento, California by Luis Rodriguez. He got the drop on one cop and got him to drop his weapon. He then shot them in cold blood. Rodriguez was originally sentenced to death. But the liberals got his sentence reduced to life. He did die in prison in 2016, 38 years after the murders.
"He's tough alright, tough till he runs into a bullet." ... The show ran a half hour and he had him cornered before the first commercial. ... Now that's police work.
Gotta love it! An officer involved shooting, and the officer in question is off the scene in less than 30 seconds. No matter how clean a shooting is, nowadays they'd still be there HOURS after the action ended.

They ran this series on MeTV here in South Florida from August 2017 through the end of December, then they dropped it. We got about two and a half seasons. In those days a season was typically 39 episodes, not these crappy ten and twelve episode seasons on cable. This was and is one of my favorite TV series from the fifties. Most of the patrol cars are Buick Specials, with a few other models of Buick thrown in. The stick on Highway Patrol insignia hides the striping and chrome on the door. I have to laugh at the small crimes that require the head of the entire Highway Patrol's attention. They never mention the state, but in one or two episodes they mention states west of them, so it can't be California, since it's impossible to drive to Hawaii. LOL
It was supposed to be Any State USA. Anywhere the Highway Patrol worked. Folks think that it's supposed to be California. It was of course filmed there, but the state is never specifically mentioned. In one episode, the bad guy said "California is a long ways away."
@@richardweiler6931 isn't that what I said in my original post? Perhaps I was unclear. A bit of trivia. I found a website that told where the opening sequence of the patrol car pulling on to the highway was filmed. The spot is in the middle of the city now, but the USGS has aerial photos of LA from the mid 1950s and sure enough there it is. Turning left on the crossroad at the top of the scene leads to the coast.
Just found out about this from MeTV and really like the couple I've seen. Probably won't watch them there as MeTV apparently hacks up the old shows. At times, this guy makes Joe Friday sound like he's on quaaludes though. It's like listening to a team of auctioneers. That's Middle Atlantic Standard. An artificial accent that was developed & popularized in the mid 20th century in an effort to unify Americans with one accent. Most of the newscasters, actors, politicians, etc. of that era spoke it. I still speak it, as I was taught it in grade school, but except for a few old relics like me, it has almost died out.
Me too. Matthews goes out for the most trivial crimes that always seem to be committed within a short driving distance from the non-descript little headquarters office.

@@Forensource That was common in 50s shows. Even the most underpowered cars squealed their tires when starting. However, my favorites are the old movies where the drivers are turning the steering wheels from side to side as they drive along straight roads. If you did that in real life your car would be all over the road and probably end up in a ditch, or you would be stopped for drunk driving.
each episode was shot in 3 days max. there's all sorts of things like that. in one episode, crawford completely misses the phone base when he goes to hang it up. no take 2, they just left it.
The cars they use are gorgeous this was the time when the cars were different, and that meant they had a distinctive character and were not drawn with a ruler. There was real room for the legs, and you didn't have to sit like sardines in a can.
If you're writing a sci-fi or a cyberpunk story, a show like Highway Patrol is a great inspiration. Everything is neat, and clean. I love procedurals. The hijacking of the school bus has to be the source of the 'Dirty Harry' highjacking.

One of the best police shows ever, starring the great Broderick Crawford, who won the Oscar for Best Actor in 1949 for his role in "All the King's Men," a fictionalized story about Louisiana governor and senator Huey Long.
also picked up a number of times while this series was on TV. In later years you saw Dan driving on dirt roads and such in search of the bad guy........no lic. required on those roads.
I thought that was Paul Burke, He was still quite young looking in the mid 60's, when he was on 12 O'clock High. He was one of the highway patrol men. Lots of extra actors on this particular episode.

Robert Walton Yeah, 1 or 2 Thompsons appear in the episode. Correct for the time period. A lot of military surplus Thompsons, M2 Carbines (select fire) and Resising submachine guns were given to agencies in the 50's. Many large agencies had them for decades. Some small agencies may still have them. There was also a semiauto carbine version of the Reising marketed specifically to LE agencies in the 50's. Looks like a great item. I wouldn't have minded having one back then. Plus a shotgun.......
@@troy9477 The gun the cop had at the roadblock has a forward vertical grip, something very few military units ever got. It's an M-1928A1, a desirable version of the Thompson, one worth a lot of money these days.
the bus driver is the same actor from Duel, when Dennis weaver crashes his Valiant into the wooden fence across from the Cafe, he does an examination of Weaver's neck and utters: "Just a little whiplash is all"

@@joanngreen7475 Miss Canfield was played by Diane Brewster. She had a recurring role (4 episodes) in Maverick where she played Smantha Crawford a slick con artist who got Bret Maverick into all kinds of trouble and usually ended up cheating him out of his money at the end.
It was an interesting contrast to her role as Mis Canfield. here is an interesting bit of trivia, she appeared as Miss Simms in her first appearance in 1957, then as Miss Canfield for 4 more episodes.
Her replacement, Miss landers was played by the very cute and darling Sue Randall, who sadly contracted lung cancer and died at the age of 49.
Miss Canfield was also a notorious chain smoker who died of cancer.
Paul Burke, "Naked City" and 12 O'Clock High" - 60s TV series, played one of the cops here.
Also in this premier episode is Paul Burke who would go on to be in TV's "Naked City" & "12 O'Clock High."

Broderick Crawfords was (in his movies he still is) a brilliant actor. And this irresistible voice. "Highway Patrol" is a great series.
I'm not so sure how brilliant an actor he was, he seems to be the same character all the time, just like John Wayne. He is, however, great to watch, one of the real he-man tough guys that we no longer see on TV and in the movies.

Manuela Hertel I first saw Brodrick Crawford in a 1956 movie titled "The Fastest Gun Alive", Crawford played a fixated gunfighter and his latest intended victim was to be Glenn Ford. Great movie, great acting.
The show's narrator, Art Gilmore, was already a regular in Jack Webb's 'stable' of favorite actors. On "Dragnet", He's played the roles of Captain Didian, Lieutenant (later Captain) Moore and others, and in a switch of departments, a batallion fire chief in "Emergency!" He also became the voice of dozens of major movie trailers in the 1950's and 1960's. He appeared in dozens of other movies and TV shows, but was mostly uncredited or as an off screen voice. RIP Mr. Gilmore.
Art Gilmore got his start as the announcer for DOCTOR CHRISTIAN on the radio. His voice was about an octave higher in that series. Must have taken some hormones or learned how to lower his voice.
Art lived to be 96 if I remember correctly.

This is the first episode that starts off this most outstanding series. I wasn't even born when this started in '55 so grateful to see these uploaded on UA-cam. Don't even watch regular TV much anymore. Programming is mostly mush. I'm retired now so can enjoy these episodes at my leisure.

Fantastic collection!..I watched this very popular series on TV when it first came out. Love all the old cars from my youth and the story lines with police work never change.
The stories themselves are timely and deal with criminal issues that are still problems today.
I never realized how educational the series was at the time..

Good morals shouldn't end when you turn on your TV set, good morals should affect every aspect of your life. These days church isn't the character builder is was in the 1950's, churches have become tax-free money makers that judge the poor and homeless instead of welcoming them. Most important of all is your personal relationship with God. Let Him be your ultimate guide, not the church who is subjected to sin just like you and me.

Nor can anyone get phone in tips that lead directly to the criminals in a few minutes like Dan, either. he also has an amazing way of getting information to every party concerned in just a few minutes. That was sarcasm, by the way, even though I love the show, the police work is nowhere near real life.
I watch a lot of Highway Patrol episodes. This is one of the better ones.

Virtually all of the outside scenes were filmed on the streets and in the hills of the area surrounding Los Angeles. This show is largely why I would eventually leave the big city for a small town or rural area in which I have lived much of my life. Just never cared for city life. When the 1970s rolled around & I was of driving age, naturally I would buy '50s cars & trucks.
Great! Apparently this was the pilot, or first episode of season one. I saw this series (missing a few for teenage reasons) from the age of 12 and into my teens. This was possibly the first cops series to incorporate police code speech into the scripts -- so much so that we used to imitate Broderick Crawford's terse speech patterns around the house, ending sentences with "10-4?," to which the reply was usually an affirmative, "10-4 !"
Yes, the story lines were simplistic, fast paced and often naively adulatory of law enforcement practices as well as miscreant criminal behavior. But the production values were consistently smart and professional. Mmmmm -- love seeing those Olds , Buick and Chevy patrol units along with all the brands out there on those highways and byways, bouncing furiously across potholes long before anyone began to think they were classics.
The series cast many excellent actors of the period, but for me, Broderick Crawford himself is the magic factor in every scene.

My father was a highway patrolman here in California specifically SAN DIEGO , he was 6 feet 3 225 pounds of one of the nicest human beings you’d ever meet and didn’t have a bad bone in his body and went out every night on his motorcycle and my mom and I worried to death that he would never come back, he worked the four to midnight shift and hearing the motorcycle pull up at midnight gave the entire family a sigh of relief . And where are these type of men today?

Remember that this was fifties, long before the uptight politically correct crowd started denigrating men, and vilifying beautiful women. Back then it was okay to admire a woman's beauty.
This was the pilot, and the only episode backed by the California Highway Patrol. Those are the real CHP uniforms AND cars....'54 Olds Super 88s and '55 Buick "Spec-tury" (Special body with the CHP ordered Century 364" V8). CHP later pulled out of the deal for technical and prop support when they found out about Crawford's suspended license due to a string of DUIs in LA county...that's why the later episodes had cars that the CHP never had.

The opening credits mention the California Highway Patrol, which has been said only appears in this 1955 pilot. The episode numbers as named in this collection don't seem to match the chronological order in which they were actually filmed, if you check the year produced (roman numerals) in the closing credits. Episode "14" is actually early in the series, filmed in 1955, and also credits the California Highway Patrol.
Don't get me wrong, I love these old HP episodes and thank Foxeema for uploading them. Haven't seen them since I was a kid. Just makes it a little tricky to follow the evolution of the show.

I also grew up watching these episodes. I was 8 yrs old in '55. TV was still in its infantsy. Many shows reflected positive American values, as corny as it may seem to some today. I miss that time and place when I watch these episodes.

Around 1958/9 I watched and loved HP when I was 11/12 at my friends house on Saturday nights (didn't have a tv)...This was in Glasgow, Scotland...Nobody Important is correct, not all ITV areas took it.
Oops! As Nobody Important has so correctly stated, it WAS shown on some UK TV channels way back when. I remember watching Highway Patrol episodes in Nottingham with my dad after he had discovered the programme (he was also into cowboy shows in a big way, too). Just LOVED the 10-code abbreviations, and used them at school on occasions to reply to teachers' requests and questions! Classmates thought I was barmy! Happy days.

Among my boyhood shows. Isa Ashdown, the girl in the schoolbus, also played Mink in the old radio show Zero Hour; and Luxe Radio Theatre. I love watching this show for the set locations of what the surrounding LA area used to look like: beautiful rolling hills, Oak trees, Eucalyptus trees, and those little green spots where you could pick fresh cilantro. Mostly all malls now...

The cop Paul Burke is from the 1950's NYPD police drama Naked City! Another above board show... well written the regular cast and the guest stars all outstanding! As is the Highway Patrol you can tell after watching the first few episodes...that the events depicted most are real! This is a great show, sometimes you know how the story will end, just as some criminals are dumb as door nails! Other times... you don't know which way it's going to go! The story lines have a nice pace, and flow.

He also starred in the 1960s TV series "12 O'Clock High".
Great Episode. In case anyone is not aware, footage from this particular episode which served as the pilot for the show, was used at the beginning and end in all of the introductory credits. I was pleased to see Diane Brewster of “Leave it To Beaver” fame portraying a switchboard operator in the control room. What a classy looking dame she was back then. Too bad they did not offer her a contract as a permanent dispatcher or something, but fortunately she got many other television offers. I like that ’41 two door Oldsmobile that the convict had stolen and was driving. That same car was in another early episode called “Desert Town” of which an elderly doctor drives. Although its got different license plate numbers on it its definitely the same car as it has the same exact paint blemish on the lower back side that can be seen at 8:16 in this episode. I strongly suspect that the car then got a new paint job, as it truly needed one, and then was used again as a two-toned two door ’41 Oldsmobile appears in at least three other HWP episodes. Speaking of cars, that ’54 Mercury which appears at 22:26 and ends up with its right front tire getting shot is a very impressive looking automobile. But just think, if Dan Matthews had arrived at The Golden Pheasant only a minute later that convict and his accomplice would have made a clean getaway in that car - at least until the next HWP roadblock was set up!
And what about that 1955 Imperial with the 331 CID HEMI V8 engine @ 22:31 ! A real gem.

But not nearly as rare as the Chrysler 300 which cost the exact same price but of which there were only 1725 sold to the public in that very great year of the American automobile.

I was 16 years old in 1969 and I had a two tone green and white, 1955 buick 2 door hardtop that I paid $75 for it , i would spend hours doing burnouts in that ole buick, driving backwards in reverse and then floor the gas pedal and drop her down in drive and do burnouts after burnouts after burnouts ,
My friends would hang out the back windows to watch the tires smoking.
I tried to kill that car the summer 69.
I couldn't do it! I abused it and sold it to my neighbor for 50 bucks, it kept on running . One day me and my 3 buddies skipped high school and we pooled all the money we had in our pockets and come up with 75 cents total, we drove that car all day and all night, all over des Moines ,

We have several channels that carry shows from the 50's through the 80's. Three of them are not on cable, they are sub channels of broadcast channels, so I have a standard antenna to pick them up, because DirecTv does not carry the sub channels. Sea Hunt is still on one of them.

I can't believe I found H.P. My dad and I watched this I think once a week. I love how things looked back then.. my grandson and I will no doubt get into this.
The show is fun to watch even though the scenarios are unbelievable. We have the head of the Highway Patrol going out to answer calls for petty crimes, while mobilizing the entire Patrol to throw up roadblocks because Mrs. Jones had a ten cent candy bar stolen from her store (Yes, i'm exaggerating, but not by much). In addition, they broadcast advisories which someone always happens to hear in a few minutes, calls in and gives then the tip to solve the crime within hours of its occurrence. Big fat Dan Matthews WADDLES from hiding place to hiding place as he closes in on armed suspects and is never once hit with a bullet. LOL
Don't get me wrong, I like to watch it for the nostalgic value, but it is a thoroughly unrealistic police drama. The opening music is also very dramatic and sets the mood.

Thanks for posting these! Been watching various episodes but hooked now by coming to the pilot. Never watched back in the day so these are all new to me. I like the cars the best. We can go to car shows today and see them parked pretty but watching them nose dive in the turns and when stopping on bias ply tires is a reminder of what it was like to pilot one of those babies. I also like the on-location filming and seeing things that used to be quite common like diner jukeboxes and payphones. For an additional time warp, have iHeartradio '50's playing low while watching.

Roadside gas stations were always known for overcharging as you either paid up or be stuck & the 2nd choice wasn't really an option. Hmm, the first new tires I bought were I think in 1975 & you could still buy bias ply tires, at least the smaller sizes for $24.
I can recall my mother buying ultra low priced nylon tires for her 1958 Ford at Montgomery Ward,where she worked in 1964 for about $9 or $10 apiece. I remember how they would develop a flat spot after being parked for more than 9 or 10 hours...
I remember Pepboys in Santa Ana, Ca., 1960. Alcoholic Papa always bought new tires there and a oil change. I loved looking at the new "stingray" bicycles. And that rubbery smell and the whirring sound in the tire bays...

The late Broderick Crawford was one of America's favorite "tough-guy" actors. His characterization of HP chief Dan Matthews was the main reason for the series' success.
Well written episode; good start for a great series. Diane Brewster had a long career after this. She had a recurring role as a beautiful conwoman Samantha Crawford who matched wits with James Garner several times in "Maverick". She played the part so well she even played the same character in an episode of "Cheyenne"! She did get a shot at movies in 1958-59. I was surprised to see Paul Burke in a tiny part since he was already an established actor by the time "Highway Patrol" aired. In 1955 alone he appeared in 7 other roles besides "Highway Patrol". He had a much bigger part the same year in an episode of "The Lone Ranger". he went on to star in a couple of hit TV shows "Naked City" and "12 O:Clock High".

Great episode, I love this TV series for all of its quirkiness and dramatic music and many other things. This first episode, "Prison Break," originally aired on televisions October 3, 1955, 67 years ago from typing this comment. This show was a true window with a look into 1950's America, the good and the bad.
The Golden Pheasant restaurant in this episode was real close to the helicopter crash site of Kobe Bryant.

The most tragic real shooting of CHP officers occured at the Tip's restaurant in Newhall about 1970. 4 Highway Patrolman were shot and killed at that restaurant. I ate breakfast at that same restaurant in the morning before this tragic incident occured that same evening. My uncle was building Magic Mountain at the time, and that was the closest restaurant to Magic Mountain (under construction at the time--didn't open until May 28, 1971). The hat in my pic was was my uncle's hardhat that he wore while on the worksite at Magic Mountain, with the original Magic Mountain logo depicted, which my cousin designed.
I remember that (forgot about it all these years) My aunt/uncle had a cabin about 10 miles from Saugus. I spent 6 weeks there in 1970.
In 1978 two CHP officers were killed in West Sacramento, California by Luis Rodriguez. He got the drop on one cop and got him to drop his weapon. He then shot them in cold blood. Rodriguez was originally sentenced to death. But the liberals got his sentence reduced to life. He did die in prison in 2016, 38 years after the murders.
Back in the 70's, cops werestill respectable, but now they are thugs in uniform.
"He's tough alright, tough till he runs into a bullet." ... The show ran a half hour and he had him cornered before the first commercial. ... Now that's police work.
Gotta love it! An officer involved shooting, and the officer in question is off the scene in less than 30 seconds. No matter how clean a shooting is, nowadays they'd still be there HOURS after the action ended.

I WATCH THIS SHOW EVERY MORNING AT 5:00 am ,,,,GREAT DAN THE MAN MATTHEWS....
They ran this series on MeTV here in South Florida from August 2017 through the end of December, then they dropped it. We got about two and a half seasons. In those days a season was typically 39 episodes, not these crappy ten and twelve episode seasons on cable. This was and is one of my favorite TV series from the fifties.
Most of the patrol cars are Buick Specials, with a few other models of Buick thrown in. The stick on Highway Patrol insignia hides the striping and chrome on the door.
I have to laugh at the small crimes that require the head of the entire Highway Patrol's attention. They never mention the state, but in one or two episodes they mention states west of them, so it can't be California, since it's impossible to drive to Hawaii. LOL
It was supposed to be Any State USA. Anywhere the Highway Patrol worked. Folks think that it's supposed to be California. It was of course filmed there, but the state is never specifically mentioned. In one episode, the bad guy said "California is a long ways away."

A bit of trivia. I found a website that told where the opening sequence of the patrol car pulling on to the highway was filmed. The spot is in the middle of the city now, but the USGS has aerial photos of LA from the mid 1950s and sure enough there it is. Turning left on the crossroad at the top of the scene leads to the coast.
Just found out about this from MeTV and really like the couple I've seen. Probably won't watch them there as MeTV apparently hacks up the old shows. At times, this guy makes Joe Friday sound like he's on quaaludes though. It's like listening to a team of auctioneers. Even with the captions on I have to keep backing up to see what they said. - Thanks for posting!
That's Middle Atlantic Standard. An artificial accent that was developed & popularized in the mid 20th century in an effort to unify Americans with one accent. Most of the newscasters, actors, politicians, etc. of that era spoke it. I still speak it, as I was taught it in grade school, but except for a few old relics like me, it has almost died out.
The last scene with shootout was shot at intercection of 101 Ventura Frwy and Las Virgenes rd.
+panheadcraig You are correct! The Golden Pheasant restaurant where the shot out happened use to be in Calabasas, but is now long gone.

One of my favorite shows as a kid and even now. Broderick Crawford was the man. No 50 man swat team to get a guy. Just him and his partner 😅

Me too. Matthews goes out for the most trivial crimes that always seem to be committed within a short driving distance from the non-descript little headquarters office.

@@Forensource That was common in 50s shows. Even the most underpowered cars squealed their tires when starting. However, my favorites are the old movies where the drivers are turning the steering wheels from side to side as they drive along straight roads. If you did that in real life your car would be all over the road and probably end up in a ditch, or you would be stopped for drunk driving.
at 22:30 a truck going down the highway completely disappears!!!

each episode was shot in 3 days max. there's all sorts of things like that. in one episode, crawford completely misses the phone base when he goes to hang it up. no take 2, they just left it.

The cars they use are gorgeous this was the time when the cars were different, and that meant they had a distinctive character and were not drawn with a ruler. There was real room for the legs, and you didn't have to sit like sardines in a can.
If you're writing a sci-fi or a cyberpunk story, a show like Highway Patrol is a great inspiration. Everything is neat, and clean. I love procedurals. The hijacking of the school bus has to be the source of the 'Dirty Harry' highjacking.
And a young Clint Eastwood starred in the Motorcycle Revenge episode!
Gotta love those Highway Patrol uniforms. One size fits all.

The car was stolen is a 1941 Oldsmobile with a Deco Art Grille. It was a first episode of Highway Patrol which was aired in late 1955.

One of the best police shows ever, starring the great Broderick Crawford, who won the Oscar for Best Actor in 1949 for his role in "All the King's Men," a fictionalized story about Louisiana governor and senator Huey Long.

also picked up a number of times while this series was on TV. In later years you saw Dan driving on dirt roads and such in search of the bad guy........no lic. required on those roads.
Every episode was found on UA-cam except: S02E64 Nitro, S03E93 Mother's March, and S03E99 Revenge.

I thought that was Paul Burke, He was still quite young looking in the mid 60's, when he was on 12 O'clock High. He was one of the highway patrol men. Lots of extra actors on this particular episode.

Robert Walton Yeah, 1 or 2 Thompsons appear in the episode. Correct for the time period. A lot of military surplus Thompsons, M2 Carbines (select fire) and Resising submachine guns were given to agencies in the 50's. Many large agencies had them for decades. Some small agencies may still have them. There was also a semiauto carbine version of the Reising marketed specifically to LE agencies in the 50's. Looks like a great item. I wouldn't have minded having one back then. Plus a shotgun.......
@@troy9477 The gun the cop had at the roadblock has a forward vertical grip, something very few military units ever got. It's an M-1928A1, a desirable version of the Thompson, one worth a lot of money these days.
