That was what the crooks drove but I think if the CHP had any they would have specified having the pillar. Even in a 2 door because the "B" pillar gives a bit of rollover protection.

Yes the cars were gorgeous that 57 Chevy at the beginning what a machine beautiful you'll never see anything made like those again and one more thing I got to add the way that skirt fit that woman talking about the explosion wasn't bad either got to hand it to good old Detroit and whoever made that outfit and of course the one wearing it
The cars were great. I had a 1956 chevy bel air in high school. I didn't even mind spending each Saturday fixing it. Engines were pretty well worn out by 80,000 miles. But it was worth it. It was in great shape and I sold it for top dollar at $450 in 1969. Dang, I'm starting to really miss that car!
I remember my parents watching this with I was a little kid in the early 60s. Broderick Crawford was a great actor and I am so happy to see these as an adult and have an appreciation for them I didn't have in 1961.

Both actors had long careers, and each guest starred in three different episodes of "Highway Patrol", so Broderick Crawford must've liked their work.*
They were contractual actor's and wanted it that way, there motivation was raising a family! Not being a paparazzi magnet. My dad knew many of them, very nice people from what he told me 😇

Shit Im 63 and I've never seen Highway Patrol before cellphones. I'd heard of it but had not seen it. In the last week I've watched some 30 -35 episodes and theres still a bloody shitload to go.......Face it , I'm in paradise......When I need a little variety I put on a few Dragnet, or the Untouchables......Beautiful Black& White Heaven !!!!
What kills me about this show is that the cops still blow their sirens in the middle of nowhere - and where nobody else is around to hear them. I guess it adds to the drama.
I think that, in this case, blaring the sirens is justified to put psychological pressure onto the crooks and force them to make a mistake. Must be terrible being isolated in a maze of fire roads, knowing that an unknown number of police cars are converging upon you.
I thought the cops were just being helpful to the crooks and letting them know exactly how far they were away and which direction they we’re coming from
Beautiful and likely fully optioned '57 4 door HT Belair here with the spinner wheelcovers. Some think a convertible or 2 door HT are the only ones that matter but I'd take this 4 door any day, roll the windows down and cruise easily at 65 mph with the original drivetrain. I'm glad no one jumped to conclusions and accuse the young pretty assistant of complicity in the first robbery. The location of the exteriors is given away here. Sylmar, CA. It's the last town before the Newhall/Saugus area now known as Santa Clarita. The Antelope Valley Fwy (Rt 14) is there and the interchange was destroyed by earthquakes twice (1971 & 1994)
Cars were nice and easy to identify in those days. I hope that '57 Chevy Bel Air 4 dr. hdtp. got a good wash after this episode. The same goes for those '57 Dodge cop cars.
Not really. Most had fins and two or four circular headlights. You have to look for subtledetails like you do now and be familiar with the details, just like today. like Buicks had portholes on the fenders, some Dodges did too fenders, some Plymouths had quad circlar headlights, others didn't.
@@chrismc410 Back in the day they made changes to cars to give a new and distinctive look for each model year. Some changes were significant and some were just subtle. Take the 55-57 Chevrolets. Look at their tail lights to see the differences.
Those ordinary old cars had to have enough ground clearance to drive through deep ruts and over high places on dirt roads. Try that in an Accord or Camry.
Back then there were towns that were still unincorporated and didn't have their own police department so they were served with either the highway patrol or the sheriff's department.

If you couldn't find water on your own land, you didn't have any. There was no postal delivery. You had to drive 8 miles to get your mail or get something from the one store. If you *really* wanted to live it up and go to a restaurant and a movie, that was 38 miles of driving on a twisty turny highway. There was no cable television. With rabbit ears we could pick up one station, KPIX CBS from San Francisco which was over 100 miles away. There was one law enforcement officer for three towns and that was only from 9am to 6pm. After six we had to rely on County police. There was 5 officers patrolling 3,882 square miles. That's 81 times the size of San Francisco county.

It was nice to see the patrol cars driving on those narrow, dirt fire trails with their sirens wailing...I guess they wanted to warn the many school buses and tractor trailers to stay out of the way. However, all they did was warn the crooks that they were coming.

It's refreshing to see such conscientious bandits helping to stop the spread of any communicable virus. They wore their face masks even before they were mandated. They maintained social distancing and wiped down everything they touched. They even got their shots!

SARS COV-2 measures between 9 and 12 nanometers in size or about .01 of one micron (About the size of your brain, I might add). Lots of non Highway work for the Highway Patrol..My first car ever as a kid was a 57 Chevy 2 door 2 tone paint bought in 1970 for 250 bucks was running great...for awhile...sold it...found out all it had was a plugged fuel line dude drove past my house later that day honking his horn and waving at me saying it was a plugged fuel line kid was my age must have become a mechanic after that...hahahahaha..... ..Love these old shows
Yes during my lifetime I sold cars that had a problem like that and the next owner fixed it quickly and was on the road. But then I was a novice when it came to mechanics which I would later get better at.
From about 8:35 to 9:05, I heard a tractor of some kind in the background. It's not the first time I heard this on a '59 episode. Where was this part filmed--on a truck patch of some kind or where they're leveling the ground for a highway or building? I definately hear a heavy equipment engine.
That "mad bomber" is Nels Olsen from Little House on the Prairie. And check out their getaway car......a 57' Chevy Bel-Air...Okay, okay it's a 4 door......splitting hairs no good on Highway Patrol.......my new favorite 27 minute television show......ya' gotta love ol'Broderick Crawfish......he's beautiful .

No brand names meant no bad associations, just the license plate #. It was also the reason that patrol cars were various makes depending on the prop supplier/mfr agreements.
@Wooley689 thanks, so true, they were really concise in those days. In fact I had hardly watch TV now, a thirty minute program is about perfect for my attention span. The robbers had a really slick '57 Chevy, but while that car has its merits (small block Chevy V-8) I'm so glad that other now forgotten but excellent cars like the D-500 package are given a chance to be appreciated. Matthews is usually gruff, but I think he's a bit overboard on this one. He was very rude to the jeweler who was the first victim, showing no sympathy for not only being robbed but having his life threatened--only complained that his description of the perpetrators was not very helpful.
This is amazing! the crooks at that time got to drive a '57 Chevy convertible with rare factory hub cap spinners. I bet it has triple carbs and a hot Isky or Howard's cam. Well, it could.....
This '57 Chevy is a 4-door hardtop called the "Sports Sedan"; I do not see a convertible here. Yes the spinners were rare. You did not have triple carbs (three deuces) option in 1957; either 2 x 4 barrels (245 or 270 hp) or fuel injection (250 or 283 hp). The base 283 one 4 barrel was 220 hp.
That’s what greed gets you. They should have skipped town after the second robbery. But of course they had to do three jobs so they would be caught. Can’t have crooks getting away on Highway Patrol.
Very interesting trivia! @LuckyBal... They were on dirt roads because it was after Broderick Crawford got a drunk driving and lost his license. The California Highway Patrol withdrew its support of the show, that's why they aren't wearing the CHP shoulder patches either.
As Broderick Crawford had his license suspended for some time for drunk driving he seldom drove a vehicle for any distance and usually on side roads and dirt roads.
That jewelry store sales girl was sizzling hot. That rear view of her made my eyes water ! The crooks were pretty classy. Picnic basket lunch and a gorgeous new Chevy. And I couldnt see the details on the dark suit, but that grey one was a very well made. and nice fabric. Nothing cheap. But they used the same gimmick too many times. Too bad.
this was the only show that the actress who played Miss Davis was in...she probably met some highway patrol producer who promised to make her a star...after she goes to bed with him it's good night Irene

Not all towns were incorporated and they often didn't have their own police department. One town was West Hollywood where my dad lived after he and mom divorced and so did an aunt and uncle of mine. The sheriffs dept and highway patrol handled police calls. It was finally incorporated in 1986. I live in a small town that abolished it's police dept over 50 years ago for budgetary reasons. The sheriffs department serves us.
I love these episodes. Production was fantastic. Same identifiable music. Well written scripts that get to the point with no useless throwaway dialogue. Sometimes I feel like I am watching way more than 25 minutes. Today’s writers could learn an awful lot from shows like these.

Lots of non Highway work for the Highway Patrol..My first car ever as a kid was a 57 Chevy 2 door 2 tone paint bought in 1970 for 250 bucks was running great...for awhile...sold it...found out all it had was a plugged fuel line dude drove past my house later that day honking his horn and waving at me saying it was a plugged fuel line kid was my age must have become a mechanic after that...hahahahaha..... ..Love these old shows
Yes during my lifetime I sold cars that had a problem like that and the next owner fixed it quickly and was on the road. But then I was a novice when it came to mechanics which I would later get better at.
From about 8:35 to 9:05, I heard a tractor of some kind in the background. It's not the first time I heard this on a '59 episode. Where was this part filmed--on a truck patch of some kind or where they're leveling the ground for a highway or building? I definately hear a heavy equipment engine.

No brand names meant no bad associations, just the license plate #. It was also the reason that patrol cars were various makes depending on the prop supplier/mfr agreements.
My guess is it might be considered a type of advertising.

@Wooley689 thanks, so true, they were really concise in those days. In fact I had hardly watch TV now, a thirty minute program is about perfect for my attention span. The robbers had a really slick '57 Chevy, but while that car has its merits (small block Chevy V-8) I'm so glad that other now forgotten but excellent cars like the D-500 package are given a chance to be appreciated. Matthews is usually gruff, but I think he's a bit overboard on this one. He was very rude to the jeweler who was the first victim, showing no sympathy for not only being robbed but having his life threatened--only complained that his description of the perpetrators was not very helpful.
Punishment was swift and sure. No bullshit lawers.
Actually, we never see convictions, only the arrests.

This '57 Chevy is a 4-door hardtop called the "Sports Sedan"; I do not see a convertible here. Yes the spinners were rare. You did not have triple carbs (three deuces) option in 1957; either 2 x 4 barrels (245 or 270 hp) or fuel injection (250 or 283 hp). The base 283 one 4 barrel was 220 hp.

Highway Patrol withdrew its support of the show, that's why they aren't wearing the CHP shoulder patches either.
As Broderick Crawford had his license suspended for some time for drunk driving he seldom drove a vehicle for any distance and usually on side roads and dirt roads.

That jewelry store sales girl was sizzling hot. That rear view of her made my eyes water ! The crooks were pretty classy. Picnic basket lunch and a gorgeous new Chevy. And I couldnt see the details on the dark suit, but that grey one was a very well made. and nice fabric. Nothing cheap. But they used the same gimmick too many times. Too bad.

I always wonder why the state patrol and not the local police investigate these crimes.
Not all towns were incorporated and they often didn't have their own police department. One town was West Hollywood where my dad lived after he and mom divorced and so did an aunt and uncle of mine. The sheriffs dept and highway patrol handled police calls. It was finally incorporated in 1986. I live in a small town that abolished it's police dept over 50 years ago for budgetary reasons. The sheriffs department serves us.

I love these episodes. Production was fantastic. Same identifiable music. Well written scripts that get to the point with no useless throwaway dialogue. Sometimes I feel like I am watching way more than 25 minutes. Today’s writers could learn an awful lot from shows like these.
