What you need is some Cherrywood Fabrics, i stead of those Pantone-perfect colors. It's cotton, but it's got so much variance and texture in the fabric. Plus, it has some weight. It's hand-dyed, so it's not cheap, but you'd love it.

For the Orange Peel quilt I like the colors in the background, but I would drop the greens and use the reds/peach and the blues. When you stitch your snowball, just move over 1/2 inch and sew another line of stitching. Then you have a whole bunch of 1/2 square triangles already sewn together and no waste. You can make borders or blocks out of these. Lots of possibilities. Thanks for sharing

Cathy, I am currently making an 'orange blossom' quilt block that is just like yours. It is a tutorial by Shabby Fabrics. They used freezer paper as templates (and they are reusable at least 6 or more times) and have a really unique way of sewing the curve. I absolutely love it. I am too cheap to purchase a template or their precut freezer paper, so I made a mock up on my own and tested it out. It worked great and you could make the blocks any size you want. I am making it 2 tone also. Because I hate waste too, I cut my blocks at 10 inches and then cut a 'crust' and a 'pie filling' out of each and then switched them thinking I would have 2 quilts at the end--one with brown filling and light beige crust and one with light beige filling and brown crust. I actually think it is rather boring like that. I think I am going to make them alternate, doing a brown block and then a light beige block. My daughter suggested I put a "pop" of color in it. We will see.

    • @TheCatBirdQuilts
      @TheCatBirdQuilts  Рік тому

Marcia, how wonderful we are working on a similar project! I think an alternating pattern (brown on beige, beige on brown) would be so very beautiful! I think the interest that will create will be enough--maybe no pop of color will be needed! Thanks for the recommendation for the tutorial: I will have to check that out! 🤓👍🏻

That is me as well! LOVE shopping/thrifting fabric, love finding patterns (though I find this part really hard) and I love the piecing - I do not like the quilting part, but I like the binding. I think for me at least, quilting in a small space on a domestic machine is still very daunting. I find getting lines straight so hard and I'm not quite brave enough for free motion (yet). And Phew! I thought you were thinking of making HST's with the wee triangles and I was oh that's a LOT of work! The wedding Orange Peel Quilt will be stunning!

  • @julias.8236

Lovely quilt projects! For now my vote would be to only use the red/ orange fabrics in the orange peel quilt to keep it's timeless quality. But surely it'll be great in the end. And so true what you say about finishing a quilt. For my last quilt I tried to track the time making it. Doing the top needed approximately the same time like doing the sandwich, the quilting and binding (and the backing was a one piece and quilting quite loosely, mostly stitch in the ditch...
Yes, it takes time, but I love my quilts to be finished and do not allow too much storage space for unfinished quilt tops 😉

First, I'd like to say I love your informative videos. I was taken aback by the shirt you were wearing in this video. We lost our home in the Thomas Fire in December 2017. I had that beautiful shirt before the fire. You never know when you will come across something that really takes you back. Of course I had to try to remember how I acquired the shirt (is it a Duluth Trading Co. item?) and remembered how much I loved that sweet happy print. Seeing that shirt from my past made me realize how your clever use of thrifted shirts in a quilt could quite possibly take the lucky recipient back to another time or remind them of a special person.

Oh my goodness, Pennie! I'm so sorry that you lost your home (and that sweet shirt) in a fire--I'm sure there are times that it feels like yesterday. 😔 Mine came from Lands End--but you know how fabrics circulate! No doubt several other shirt makers had shirts from that fabric line! I love where you landed with these thoughts---that well-placed thrifted shirt fabrics can evoke memories and good feelings and delight the recipient in ways that none of us could imagine. What a gift. ❤️

I agree that putting the colors in the center of the orange peel looks terrific! For me, all the colors work, so whichever way you go is a win. I love piecing, so a lot of my quilts get stuck at the top is done! I recommend not using up your triangles on the back, I think making it match back to front is too much work. I've been using up scraps as placemats for meals on wheels, which not only uses my fabric scraps but batting scraps too! Maybe you find some things like that you want to do - not the commitment that a quilt is, but uses up the extra.

A friend has a large selection of batik 2.5 inch roll sets that we are going to work on together. I have been looking for pattern ideas for them. I think you and I, by nature, need a mental vision of the fabric in a quilt to begin. To that end , I have been doing searches and looking at made quilts, often on pintrest. That helps me evaluate color combinations, and proportion of values as well.

Mona, I'm so glad you finally went to the Goodwill---don't stop going, just find out which days are special tag days, or half-off or whatever discount day they have (and there always is one!) Then you'll see the bargains there (and yes, I've been told that California is just more expensive in general, although I do see shirts with that price here, too. And yes, clearance racks at Marshall's or Kohl's or even department stores sometimes offer surprising bargains! Once you start shopping with that in mind, you'll find all sorts of great shirts at a great price--and also don't forget that an XL shirt is about a yard and a third of fabric! If you bought 1-1/3 yard of high quality quilting cotton, it could be $16--$17, so still cheaper! 🤓👍🏻

Hoping to complete them rapidly and send them off to the longarmer so I can move along to the projects I really enjoy, the scrappy quilts! To maintain my energy and enthusiasm, I intersperse the sewing of the two color blocks with a block of scrappy happiness I am collecting for a future quilt- my little secret “rewards”!
Love your orange peel plans. I admire your patience and drive to to color the project plan, cut all those pieces, sew all those perfect curves. I do not have that much patience left in my lifetime. I find I’m happiest making forgiving scrappy blocks with points that don’t go to the edge and therefore don’t get cut off and allow trimming to square them up and make for easier pain-free piecing. Perhaps I’m just getting lazier in my quilting journey? I prefer to think that I’m enamored with playing with the scraps and enjoying the surprise placements and outcomes from randomness in design- which is always a leap for my brain but has produced very satisfying outcomes.
I so enjoy your videos and love your discussions about your process and love seeing your progress on your many projects. Thank you, Cathy and Paul for amazing quality content! Have a wonderful week!

Someone may have already mentioned it, but Donna Jordan did a video on an easy double wedding ring quilt that uses templates with slits in them. You cut your pieces out and cut the little slits and they match up as you sew the two curved pieces together. Two of the 5 templates are those that you’re using for the orange peel, I think. She has a link to them in her video. Yours are perfect, as usual, using what you have!

I like the orange peel quilt and think it will be lovely no matter what you choose. The oranges and tan are stunning together.
Here's a funny story about riding in a police car. Last June my husband had a stroke. Thank God he is okay but it was initially very upsetting. I was convinced to go home to sleep and left the hospital late. It was raining, downtown, deserted, and I was upset and went out the wrong exit. I decided to cut through the ER and a uniformed man asked if he could help me. I told him I had to get over to the other side of the building and he offered me a ride. I was so appreciative! I went to get into the car and he said I had to sit in the back(?) which I thought was rude and then saw it was a police car. Oh, I have never been in a police car before, I exclaimed. I got in and said, "Oh, this is not comfortable. There are no seat belts. It's dirty!" He said, "We don't aim for comfort, Mam". It was a surreal experience while I was already in an odd state.

Random question, where do you buy your dress shirts that you wear? I love the solids and the print your wearing.

Some of them come from the thrift store (shocker! 😂) but the solid ones and the one from this video came from Lands End. They are 100% cotton (so when I wear them out or get tired of them I can use them as quilting fabric. 😂😘)

Your projects are so beautiful! The curved orange peel block especially speaks to me. I decided to dive into the deep end of the curved piecing pool on my second quilt. Oh boy…such a learning experience! What saved me from exasperation was the “classic curves ruler” from Color Girl Quilts. Makes orange peel blocks really easy and fast to cut in a range of sizes, from 4 inch to 8.5(!) inch curves. It’s turned into my favorite tool. Silly me, I forgot to add the link to the video with the great pressing of the seams to the side, in my previous comment. ua-cam.com/video/zWtHCO72rz4/v-deo.html
