We own a moving business and a tip I would give is to have a "parts box" to put bed parts, remote controls, TV power cords, furniture parts from pieces that need disassembled to move safely.

As a kid I moved a lot (10 houses in 10 years), so I think my parents found a way to brainwash me into thinking that it was really fun. To this day I really e joy the whole process of packing and unpacking, even when travelling, but also when moving. I even volunteer to help friends and family when they are moving just for the fun of it.

You dont have to keep a spread sheet. Just take a picture of whats in the box before you close it and lable the picture with the numbered box.

Amazon has a set of pre-printed, color-coded moving labels for $8. We're in the process of packing and they have been so helpful and make labeling a breeze.

Numbering the boxes and keeping a list of contents (keep digital copies so you can't lose it!) is a must if you are hiring movers or shipping anything. If anything happens to your goods, not only do you immediately know which boxes are missing, you know exactly what was inside.

I love moving! I've moved 7 times in the last 6 years and have itchy feet again! It might change when I find the perfect home but I just love the decluttering and organisation! I'm in the UK and have 2 kids under 6. Plus cats and a house bunny :)

My family and I moved in late 2018 from one house to another house in the same metropolitan area. But don't be fooled, it was still very stressful. I did not grow up in a family that moved around a lot, so it was definitely a stressful experience. However, should I move again in the future, I am grateful for this video to help me out.

I actually really enjoy moving, always have, and I have done it a lot. In fact, we are planning on moving out of our rental and in into our first home which is bittersweet because I hope to be able to move again! This is the first time I'm doing it with 2 kids though, so we'll see. It always feels like a fresh start to me. :)

Yes to the beds and the food budget. We’re a military family and have moved several times and my husband and I just have this unspoken rule that our food budget for moving week (and even a couple weeks after) will be COMPLETELY blown. And we are absolutely fine with that. And the beds...oh my goodness...the beds. That’s what I tell my friends that ask me for advice. Set up your bed as soon as it gets thru the door. You will be so thankful at the end of a very long day that it’s there waiting for you.

I've moved 3 times this year (long story!), and it was hard work even though I live alone and don't have that much stuff. I can't imagine moving a family of 9! You're amazing, don't give yourself a hard time for not always staying joyful

My dad always packs dishes in the dressers. Remove drawers, wrap dishes in clothes. Take dresser shell out to truck, put drawers full of clothing wrapped dishes into shell and place something in front of it to keep drawers in while driving. Saves cost on boxes, and my dad has never had a dish break when moved this way.
If possible, designate 1 person to be charge of stacking/organizing inside moving van. Preferablly someone who has good spacial skills. If you have a big household, this person might need a helper. Everyone else brings boxes/furniture/ whatall to the truck and places it on the tailgate, or bigger items where the person in charge directs. This helps keep the truck balanced and organized.
Either order pizza or burgers, or ask everyone to bring 1 easy potluck dish. (I know this sounds weird to some, but I come from a huge family and we potluck EVERYTHING). Fill a cooler with soda or bottles of water and tape a marker to it so everyone can write their name on their drink. Use paper plates and disposable silerware.
Close doors of empty rooms and put a piece of paper on the door that says "done".
Put a roll of paper towels in the bathroom so you dont have to deal w a soggy towel at the end of the day.
Keep a trash can handy for last minute tosses, and box for last minute donations. If any helpers drive by a donation center on their way home, ask if they would be willing to drop it off for you.
If helpers have kids, pay a teenager to play with them outside. Balls/frisbees/sidewalk chalk/paper and crayons/ bubbles are all inexpensive and easy. The teen can keep the kids busy and out from under foot, but parents can hear/ see whats going on.
If you have a lot people coming to help, ask neighbors ahead of time if ok to park in front of their houses.
Play uplifting music while working. A good song makes times go faster and makes work seem not so hard.
And yes! Yes!! Label those boxes! Label them to death. Or use numbers and spread sheet. Bc you WILL forget which box that most crucial item is in.
Send a personal thank you card, or heartfelt text to each helper a couple days after moving.

I lived in 6 different places during my 7 years of college and law school and I loved it! This was all before I had a whole house to move though. I had never moved before college so I think that’s why I enjoyed it so much. It’s also so much easier to declutter when you move. The idea of moving with children and a whole house of stuff is so daunting though. Thanks to y’all for doing this collab!

The number system is really great if you know you will move again. Because you can reuse the moving boxes without crossing out all the past labells

God is using you in this video. Exactly what I needed today for some changes coming. My life saving tip the last time I moved was to keep a bag handy with important things like packing tape, markers, important papers etc

  • @MidnightSunPonyPal

One thing I found really useful was to put a small piece of tape (I used washi tape because it removes easily) on things like cabinets and drawers that were empty - otherwise I opened the same drawer 10 times despite it being empty!
Also putting all the pieces required to put a piece of furniture back together (Allan keys, screws, tabs etc.) in a zip lock bag and taping it to that piece of furniture was really helpful!

I love the tips! My husband said if we move again we are leaving everything and buying new. I don't blame him. We've gone from my parents house to 2 apartments and 2 houses in 10 years together.

The numbering with a spreadsheet/ list is how the professional movers do it when we have military moves. It's super helpful. It also helps to make sure you don't lose/leave a box somewhere.

Frankly all your tips are spot on. Especially the food one. We moved to the west coast, and then back east again 18mos later. Our food spending was insane.

I'm that weirdo who likes moving. I don't do it often though. I love getting everything out, seeing exactly what I have and getting rid of stuff. Last time I found a box of my old toys that I forgot I had, I kept those! Plus I just love the feeling of a fresh start. I suppose the actual day of moving I don't love where you don't have a cup to drink out of!

One of the things I do when we move (because I love to move) as I pack a bedroom/bathroom I pack a suitcase so that if we need to stay somewhere in between houses. But if not we have the things we need in suitcases it is easier to find.
Also, any screws or remotes for electronics in that room goes in the suitcase.

Hahaha, I’m your unicorn 🦄 ...but let me explain. I moved almost a dozen times as a child (from before I could remember until I got married and moved out of my parents home 0-21.) I have to give credit to my “enjoying” moving to my mama and my personality. I love organization, making things clean, decluttering, re-decorating, exploring new places etc. and moving as a child was always full of all these things! And my mama was SO good at quickly making every new house feel like home. 👍🏻 As an adult I moved out of my parents house into mine and my new husband’s apartment.... which was exciting! So I enjoyed that move..then we moved from that itty bitty apartment to our current rental home which was HUGE (in comparison.) so that was fun too. So yes, I enjoy the whole process of moving. I now have two kids and one on the way, and may have more when we move again to buy a home, but I have to say I’m excited about that move too. I guess my mama made it fun for me growing up, and I already love all the things that are necessary when moving (decluttering etc.) So, you’re welcome. 🦄😉

Great tips! We just moved this past weekend with 3 little ones. They're 4 and 2 and they were actually troopers through the whole thing. My 4 yr old girls went with me through their toys and stuffed animals and we donated a LOT together. I definitely agree on getting the beds set up first! We get to move again in like 5 months. Yay! Lol!! We sold our house, moved to a rental while our new house is being built. I'm definitely going to do the colored tape suggestion.

I liked moving myself. It was such a good time to clean and purge. Now that I am married and have a 5yr old......it is much harder. My husband is not as much a minimalist as I am. So I found packing things I didnt think we needed stressul. Also we took 6months to move as we were working on both houses at the same time and commuting back and forth based on what was bei g worked on that week. This I do NOT recomend if it can be avoided! Especially with kids.

Ok we are getting ready to move and it’s the first time with our kids. First question is what do you do with bigger items ie Hoosier cabinet that your not sure where it is going to fit best in new home? Also. We are looking to move in the middle of an Indiana winter 😣. Any advice for winter/snow/ice moving? Thanks for all the advice video was great!
