    Vince I am a former Motorola engineer and worked a lot with batteries on our phones. That flex circuit on the batteries has all the brains that controls the charging of the batteries, and most of the circuitry is safety circuits with thermistors that measure temperature and prevent batteries from overcharging and exploding, the control the charge rate from rapid to trickle, and they also have communications in them that talk tot he tools to read the tool and determine if it wants to be a 20V battery or a 60 volt battery. Sometimes batteries have sensors that determine you are hooked up to an unapproved charger, and they will not allow rapid charging, only trickle charging. there's a lot of tasks on their plate for these circuits.

    See every time they add another row of batteries for the 4ah, 6ah, 8ah etc they wire them in parallel which lowers the resistance (impedance) which is why your tool can pull more amps and feels more powerful when using a larger battery.

    I believe the 9 flex is 20 700. Dewalt could not wait for 21700 production. Benefits was minimal. But main reason was to get 60v launch out faster. I would guess the 12 flex and soon 15 are in same size casing and offset in the rows.

    You’re correct, both of those are PCB’s that likely contain the logic and any balancing wires to make sure no cell overcharges etc, and I love how Metabo does their 36V “flexvolt” style. When used at 18v you have double the Ah rating you expect, instead of the 60V Ah seeming weak. But Dewalt did do this years ago so credit for trying something different.

      I’ve taken the 6ah flex pack apart
      No FETs to disconnect the battery for over discharge. Cells are always connected . The drill does the switch off for low voltage. As for charging as long as you don’t go over 4.2v/cell (4.1v/cell is safer) you should be ok.

    Three 18650s in parallel will provide more current than two 21700s in parallel. So, yes, the flex-volt in 20 volt mode puts out more current. Under continuous beating, the tools will smoke sooner on the flex-volt.

    • @unbrokenground5694
      @unbrokenground5694 2 роки тому

      Not inherently true. It all hinges on what the specs of the cells are. Two 21700 Molicel P42A's in parallel would smoke ANY three 18650's in parallel for example.

    And me and Subaru said it isnt possible the the 60 battery killed the 20 volt tool we both did videos on it

    • @MrSandboa
      @MrSandboa 5 років тому +4

      Clearly, the 60v battery is running in 20v "mode" on a 20v tool. Don't think anyone was arguing against that fact. There are two factors that are not addressed by either you or Subaru. Voltage sag and amp draw. Both major factors in addressing the stated hypothesis. Logic would say that the voltage sag on the Flexvolt would be less than the standard (single or double series) 20v batteries. Flexvolt MAY also be able to supply more amps to the tool (bc of its triple series configuration). If either one of these statements is true, then the total wattage to the tool would be greater (potentially much greater) than a standard single or double series 20v battery.

    did a science experiment this week. did some yard work with a dewalt 20v blower and a dewalt 20v weedwhacker. tried both a 5ah 20v and a 6ah flexvolt. the blower was about the same. but the weedwhacker acted like it was steroids with the flex volt on it. why? who knows unless the weedwhacker could somehow draw more current out of the flex volt.

      @drewrinker2071 true, but the weedwackers are not flex Volt advantage tools. There is a true flex only weed Wacker but I have the 20v only model.

    • @drewrinker2071
      @drewrinker2071 8 місяців тому

      @@boburz7976 yeah I knew what you meant, but if you watch his channel the impact wrenches he is testing are all 20v. A lot of the reasons why are because the Flexvolt batteries have 21700 cells which generally have a higher discharge rating then the 18650s which means that if your 20v weedwhacker requires say 50 amps of discharge current to run optimally, the 18650 cells physically may not be able to discharge fast enough to supply that much current even though it's getting 20 volts it might only be getting 20 to 30 amps, but if you throw on the bigger Flexvolt batteries with the 21700 cells with a higher discharge current it can supply that 50amps @ 20v no problem.
      If you think of current in terms of a water hose and it might make a little more sense. If you have a large water hose, then your going to be able to fill that 5 gal bucket a lot faster than if you are using an ice maker line that's 1/4" thick, even though you have the same water pressure (volts) all throughout your house.

    don’t understand how 10 cells (in configuration 2x5) and 18 cells (3x6) can be compatible because the voltage of lithium cells still the same at 3.7v nominal.. the non flex 3.7v x 5 = 18.5v (5s2p construction) and the flex 3.7v x 6 = 22.2v (all in series the flex give 3.7v x 18 = 66.6v in 6s3p/18s1p construction).. 5s2p mean 5 cells in series by 2 in parallels (=10).. i suspect the non flex to be a recap of the old 18v dewalt packs and less powerful on 20v tools because the voltage is 3.7v lower.. that mean some sense to you?? (for to be matched in voltage, the 18650 pack should be 15 cells instead of 18 or the 20700 pack should have 12 cells)

      @xenonram 5 років тому

      It's not about the load. The batteries are 4.2V when fully charged, and 3.6-3.7. nominal, depending on who you talk to. So if you have a 2p5s configuration, like the 20V max battery does, at 5*3V6=18V. 18V is what most manufacturers say. 5*4V2= 21V, so they're using 4V as a nominal for each cell.

    For what it’s worth, the size/dimensions are in the name, and no I’m not inherently smarter than the next guy either I just nerded out on the details a while back. 18650’s are 18 inches by 65 inches....wait....make that millimeters :P 21700’s are 21mmx70mm. Thank god for Elon musk or we’d probably still have NiCad tools. It’s also interesting to see that Dewalt Cheaped out compared to Bosch and didn’t put the 21700’s in little air conditioned condos for each cell.

      Wth does Elon musk have to do with Li-ion? Or Li-ion batteries in tools. LOL.

      Andrew Delashaw his tesla demand for the batteries escalated worldwide production then other major competition car manufacturers also sent demand, then elons home battery systems just about crashed the entire battery manufacturing system, these changes alone by elons companies spurred rapid developments in the delivery systems, and optimal motor efficiency which benefited all of us as the technology has now moved on to other power delivery systems leaving a glut of supply, these developments translated into tools.

      Ummmm... thank Milwaukee? They own the battery patents on 18v Li-ion battery packs for tools and drove that innovation.
      Elon Musk has nothing to do with Li-ion in tools.

      Andrew Delashaw 100% correct Andrew, nothing to do with it

      Well i can say i am wrong, my understanding is milwaukee says they were the first and hold the patent to exclusive rights up to 20amps and then amended the suit to include every tool that utilizes any li-ion battery ...but isnt that like saying whom ever added sugar to chocolate holds the rights to all chocolate bars? Elon and his push and open technology gave tons of manufacturers a leg up on RD costs, if he hadn’t done that then most tool manufacturers wouldn’t have even made the foray into the production, thats my opinion, and Milwaukee got the short end of it because they could have controlled the battery market to an extent. Did milwaukee ever win their suit? Or did they just take a royalty? And i do appreciate milwaukee giving their 5ah batteries away like candy (chocolate bars).

    Yo Vince @VCG Construction! Thanks for the video cuz! Looks like they are running 18650s in the flexvolt. And 20700 in the 6ah 20v max.
    They run the same 20700 in the 3ah slim 20v max packs. Only it's a 1p pack instead of a 2p.
    From what I understand, they do run the 20700's in the 9ah flexvolts. Not sure if the 12 runs 20700 or 21700
    Not quite a m18 HO pack with those sweet MANgenta colored Samsung 21700 cells (on the 8 and 12 only.) I am sure you've had one apart, and it's a beautiful pack! Huge difference between the battery packs. No smart anything going on with the 20v max pack. Flexvolt seems to be a switching pcb. And probably the closest in terms of wizardry to the Redlithium packs but not equivalent by any means. Milwaukee's wizardry looks like it belongs on a rocket ship. Or in a crazy gamers computer. It's unbelievable.
    Glad you had these quick little shenanigans. 👍
    You're a beast! 💪

      I stand corrected. With closer look, those are 21700 cells! I wonder when they changed them. Check the date on the battery if you will Vince. My 2018 3ah are running the 20700's and so were the 6ah xr packs. Maybe dewalt switched them at a certain point of time?
      Try to find an older dated 6ah XR pack. Say early 2018 or earlier? And compare it to the new one you seem to have. Probably a late 2018 build date at least or newer. I have heard rumors that dewalt switch to 21700 cells in the flexvolt 9ah and the 12ah flexvolt was running the same 2170040t cells that the m18 12.0 is. We need more research!
      My 3ah slim is running some bright red Sanyo 20700s is all I know. And at the time I was informed they shared the same cell as the 6ah 20v max.
      Pretty cool. Dewalt should probably push that like milwaukee does. Even though the battery guts on the batteries are far different.
      Anyway, I stand corrected. As I said, I know they were running 20700's. I would like to know what all batteries were switched and when.
      Thanks again broseph! 👍
