Seriously, very well put together, and you got to the point quickly and explained lots of stuff. GREAT VIDEO!!!
Thank you mate 👌🏼 genuinely appreciate that
Another great video, looking forward to board change vid, keep them coming.
Thanks mate 👌🏼
Nice work bro 👏 It's nice to watch a rewire once in a while 👍
Thanks mate 👌🏼
Absolutely love your temporary board, great idea, you don't see any of the other sparks videos with that set up,well they never show you it if they do,that's what's really good about your content, more informative than some of the others 👍
Thank you mate, I do try and show as much as possible.
I often used temporary a board as it allows you saw floor boards and cut and remove old cables without any danger. The last time I did this before I retired was in my sisters house. I fitted half a dozen double sockets onto the existing board after disconnecting all the old wiring. I then ran an extension lead to every room so they had temporary power for a week. Every room was lit with a table lamp except for the kitchen that had a plug in fluorescent lamp. My sisters kids thought it was great fun sneaking about in the dimly lit rooms.
Top Tips galore! Love the switch wire on the right hand side of the box and the combo square top tip! This would have easy been an easy three parter for the Artisans 😂 Top job as always 👍
Haha thanks mate 👌🏼
love the temp board idea
Makes life a lot easier 👌🏼
Another fine rewire. Bless the chap who invented spray foam. There should be a monument to him somewhere.
Carved out of a huge block of foam and sprayed with brass look paint 👌🏼😂
Cracking video lads, really enjoyed it and I'll be using that joist trick 👍
Cheers mate 👌🏼
Great Job pal another home in the UK electrically safe!
Thankyou Al 👌🏼
Enjoyed watching your video, good stuff
Thank you mate 😁
Another one watched nice one mate 👍👍 tidy professional 🙌🏻🙌🏻 board looks mint mate seriously neat 👌👌
Cheers as always mate 👌🏼 appreciate the support from you
Great job
Thanks Gary
Great video again mate! Was hoping for the “LOOK AT THAT JOIST” comment 😂 keep them coming bud 👍
Hahaha missed a trick there !
Nice one fella. Easy watch 👌
Thanks mate
Nice neat job on the board 😎
Glad you like it 👌🏼
I always put smokes on light circuit in rentals as it ensures the tenant either changes battery or faulty alarm unit when it beeps rather than just switching off the breaker but each to their own cracking video mucker 👍🏼
Lol should of waited 5 mins for u to say exactly that 😂
Me too mate, I kind of switch between the 2 but in rentals always on the lights 👌🏼
Great video, vintage sockets and switches, in a couple of years that'll be fashionable again. Terrible none of it had any earthing!
Your right they will. Those toggle style switches are already back now, only chrome etc not brown 😀
Great video 😎
Thanks matey, 👌🏼 your slacking this video has been up for days !! 😂
@Cablesmith Electrical Yeah sorry dude must try harder 😆😆😆
@@RichardArblaster I’ll let you off this time 👌🏼😁
An old spark told me they used to go on an angle just to save on cable evidently !
Top work really love those old switches. I would alway put more double sockets I still think electricians are being too conservative in that regard. Of course load calculations come into play. The option of fused sockets is another safety option. You know customers are gonna be using dangerous trailing extensions. At any TV point I would always add a 4-way socket not sure you get them in the UK or at least a fused 4-way that sits flush on the wall mounted double socket. Maybe the landlord only wanted the minimum.
Thanks mate 👌🏼 most people do opt for extra sockets near TVs etc but your right this landlord wanted the minimum.
Also in this case not dictating where the tenant must have the TV in a way.
I have zero experience with electrical work besides making a potato clock in my younger days, but this was very interesting. I suppose they aren't keeping that vintage horror house wallpaper since you drew on it. 😅 It's amazing how unsafe so many buildings are. You look like you enjoy what you do. I subbed and will watch out for future vids.
It really is amazing how many houses are still using ancient wiring and safety devices, and you right I do love what I do!
Thanks for the sub 😊
That was really quick, in comparison to other UA-camrs 😂
😂 thanks mate, appreciate you watching 💪🏻
Use the nail puller inline with the grain of the floorboard chief. Piece of piss, nails out easy, boards back down easy. Used a nail puller for 10 years plus, happy days boss!
Yea I did notice that after a while. But most of the time it was dependent on the nail, it had better grip of the nail head side on.
Will defo keep using it anyway
Correct! But if it's good enough for new build then if practical should be implemented on full rewires!
Makes sense to me!
What’s that?
@@Cablesmith socket and switch height!
@@timshanks9130 ahh yea I do always explain to the customer about that and let them decide. Most rewires we do they are at new build heights unless they choose not to.
Nice mate. You said about the bringing the S/L into the separate hole to you don't have to mark it but it doesn't work on the end of line... it can mate if you always for example put the S/L in say the right hand side hole. So feeds in the left SL in the right.... no marking.
Yea I do always do that too but I can’t fully trust that as a rule unless it’s just me working alone 😁 thanks for watching bud 👌🏼
@@Cablesmith love the videos mate. Keep them coming bruv.
@@kriskay2771 nice 1 mate
Yup, went through to a neighbours bedroom when chasing in a socket on a terraced in Rochdale once, or was it twice, thrice !! single brick dividing houses. It was was vacant and the next house to be wired. No magic expanding foam those days, a bag of bonding was the norm.
Sounds like a right nightmare 😩 thanks for watching matey 👌🏼
No electric drill or power, all hand chasing and rawltool for plug holes, brace and bit for drilling joists... those were tough days for the trades.
Non of that testing gear either... metal capping !
@@allanroyle7622 as much as I’m really glad I’ve never had to do it like that, I wouldn’t mind a few days to give it a go.
definitely don’t envy the tough old boys tho because even with all the tech we have now it’s still tough at times
@@Cablesmith I can lend you some rawltool.... mine all went but bought a few old ones from an Ebay seller... just to remind me if an earlier life.
@@allanroyle7622 I might actually buy one if I can find one just to have a go.
I am not an electrician but I really enjoyed watching your content . i am in the process of purchasing my 1st property. It was built in the 80s and it looks like it may need rewiring and i wanted to understand what is involved in this and how much time it takes . I am surprised some electricians have taken weeks and you made it look like easy peazy. Where abouts in England do you do your jobs ?
Hi mate, when a house is just bought and still not lived in its 100 times easier, also makes more sense for the new owner, aside from the initial extra work and making good the plaster, you can then just decorate and not have to worry or have any issues for a long time. I’m in Manchester but will travel to a certain extent for bigger jobs like rewires.
Neat little job m8. Nice one 👍. Just hope the muck spreader (plasterers) don't f##k up your second fix work 🙄 . Keep them coming ... board fix next? 👊
Thanks mate, yep board install next which won’t be too long 👌🏼
nice joist trick mate
It’s easy to just think “nah just drill them” but really does take far longer when wiring. So much easier when they’re level
Nice rewire guys well done 👍🏻 Did you ever get the tri blade for your wall chaser ?
Thanks Ian, an no never got it, I’m not even interested anymore it’s been that long. I’d get one if I seen one but I’m not going out of my way to source it now. Manage fine without it
Looking forward to the Verso board vid.! Got a meeting coming up with my Premspec rep to see some samples, also taking a look at their wiring accys too. If the boards are any good then thinking about stocking them to sell along side the likes of Fusebox and Lewden.!? How long till you put that vid out mate??
Will only be a few days mate, got the footage just needs editing and uploading. Great board 👌🏼
@@Cablesmith happy days.! Will keep an eye out for it then, nice one 🤙🏼
Nice rewire mate. What year do you reckon that house was built - 40s-50s? Wirings defo from that time period
Yea it’s 1950’s and never had anything done since then! had the moneys worth I’m sure 😂
Top video man, thanks for taking the time. What camera are you using? It's a lot better than some of the shaky sparky videos I've seen😂
Thank you mate 👌🏼 gopro 9 I use
Appreciate your support 👌🏼
However did they plug anything in!! Can't believe some rooms had no sockets... Good video aswell bud
Insane isn’t it ! Must have took around 45mins to wire a house in the 50s 😂
Do you do a kitchen ring and then upstairs & downstairs on x2 20A radials?
Always dependant on the property but yes I did in this one
That house isn’t in or near partington is it mate?
My house has the exact same walls upstairs with the weird hollow block and was a right pain when I rewired it.
Irlam so not very far at all
Which brand of expanding foam do you recommend. Great vid
I use whatever my wholesalers stock which is usually everbuild fire foam
How do you keep the sockets in place when you foam them in? Thanks
Depends on the wall tbh. Wedge them in to stop them moving until it’s set. Sometimes have to screw a block of wood over the front.
Nice work mate, I do alot of work for a property developer who converts older houses into HMOs so I've come across these hollow bricks a couple of times they are a pain in the ass and those old crappy yellow bricks that turn to dust as soon as you look at them, expanding foam is an absolute life saver on those jobs love the stuff and I agree it is better than plug and screws lol
Haha yea it’s not so much a big problem but just extra time needed to move on with the job. But definitely stinger hold than plugs and screws when it comes to the older crumbling bricks
Another good video lad. Guessing they were on a bit of a budget?
Yea, keeping it to a minimum, rental 🙄
Hole in the wall ? I once went through to next door while doing a rewire in a very old terrace house in Swinton, lady next door wasn't best pleased 😂
😀😀 I’ll bet !
while at college i went through the kitchen into the living room, she was about to drop a baby and the only room decorated in the house was the front room, she came home and had all sorts of crying fits
In France you can buy those bricks in - no kidding - 40 mm thickness! In Austria it used to be 70 back in the 50s and nowadays it's 80, most builders use 100 or 120 for internal walls. The French probably hold the world record for ridiculous internal walls. I once watched a UA-cam video of a renovation. When the house was built in the early 1900s, they literally nailed tiny strips of moulding to the floor boards and ceiling, then built a partition of 19 mm tongue & groove boards nailed to those strips of moulding and finished it off with another two strips of moulding on the other side of the "wall". 19 mm between two bedrooms or bedrooms and the hall. Only nailed to the floor and ceiling.
Possibly even worse was another YT renovation where they'd used upright 25 mm terra cotta tiles to build a "brick wall" on top of some rotten floor boards. Aaaah, France. If it hasn't collapsed or caught fire yet, it's fine, n'est-ce pas? :-D
How were the sockets earthed when there was only twin cables going out of the board?
I'd add the sockets to the list of things that have been changed during the life of that house, I'd assume the originals were black bakelite to match the switches, and probably round-pin 5 or 15 amp.
Interesting information there mate.
As for the sockets, they can’t have been earthed as they only had 2 core cable. Also think there was only 4 original sockets in the whole house but your correct they had likely been changed around 60s ish to white ones
30:51 probably decided to have a few cans whilst chasing 😆😆😆
LOL 😂
Good video. One general suggestion is to try and add comments to the Video Timeline (the bar that appears at the bottom of the screen), which could be very useful to find specific parts of the Video. Such as the Temporary Board. When saving lots of Videos, one often forgets what was useful about some, when a quick look at commentary in the Timeline can be really handy. Not a negative criticism, just positive constructive criticism.
Hi Keith, firstly thanks for watching! I appreciate that.
And really appreciate your input, I have very very recently learnt this trick and will be doing it from now on.
May even go back through some old ones and add them in.
Thanks mate ☺️
@@Cablesmith Great. Some also add a text summary as well, so maybe list a few time stamps and add a summary title next to each. Really helps when going back to check something, and may help you to get more viewings and subscribers.
In the US we have been segregating circuits for a while now that means larger boards including dedicated circuits for specific use equipment, microwaves, under sink hot water tanks, TVs, dishwashers, washing machine, ovens even separating room light circuits wall from down lights to wall lights, garden lights the list goes on and on. It helps to identify faults faster as well and improves testing, it will be the way to go also because of solar and EV and prosumer world. You should just get rid of rings it’s had it’s day when will the UK regulations catch up. Remember they are a minimum as JW says often rings are the devils spawn. When they break and faults occur it can be a mare to identify and make good. We have a type of circuit called multi-wire circuits which are problematic as well and we in the USA have been getting rid of those even though the standard allows them.
I completely agree it would be much nicer having a lot more dedicated circuits, and if I was wiring my own home I would definitely have a lot more circuits than the “norm”
As for rings I am personally on the verge of not installing them at all, right now I only do kitchens on rings but will be knocking them on the head in future also.
Maybe useful to some but Iv sometime put latex gloves over the socket/switches just to protect them from the plaster or just befor bonding, Great video again
And pissed electrician from night befor
I used to use the empty socket packet and tape it back over them too. But your idea is decent 👌🏼

Thanks for watching
Is that ceiling safe in the bathroom?
Asbestos? If that’s what you mean yes it’s been checked by the owners for removal
That's not a cold brother.
Correct me if I wrong, I was thinking that on a rewire should be min LD2 D grade fire system.
I’ve always been under the assumption smoke detectors don’t come under bs7671 at all but I always say minimum of LD3. Something I will definitely be looking into tho. On this occasion the hall and kitchen are almost shared rooms anyhow with no door for the kitchen. But Like I said I will definitely look into that.
Thank you 😊
@@Cablesmith from 2019 LD2 system also included living room.
@@dariuszderecki635 thanks for that, definitely looking into it.
Do downstairs wall sockets come down from first floor or do you take up floorboards downstairs and come up?
I’m this one They come from upstairs, down. Because the floor was concrete and no access under. But if there was floorboards on the ground floor we would come from underneath.
@@Cablesmith thanks for replying

Well obviously not now@@Cablesmith
wow a front room with no sockets? Never seen that before.

Great video 👍 just out of curiosity, how much did the customer pay for this?
I can’t quite remember exactly but I think it was around £3400. However it was pretty much 2 years ago and as everything is drastically increasing the recent ones have been more 5-6k

Why are you setting sockets at 450mm & switches at 1200mm?
Because I ask the customer where they want them and do as they wish

I can’t remember exactly how much this one was, but a full rewire can be anywhere from 3-5k depending on the spec etc.
Of course depends what part of the country your in also

Looks like the types of brick they use in Spain/Italy, horrible stuff.
Absolutely awful 😩 definitely never considered the future trades when using these
Same in Germany and Austria. If it's at least 100 thick it's fine, actually makes chasing a lot easier. It's just the super-thin stuff that's seriously annoying. These bricks were mainly invented for improved thermal insulation but they're also much lighter than solid bricks, can therefore be larger and speed up construction a lot.
Needs to speak a bit louder
An old spark told me they used to go on an angle just to save on cable evidently !
Makes the most sense really, otherwise I couldn’t think of any other reason
I was told that expanding foam can react badly with PVC cables but could be a myth ?
First time I’ve heard that, something to look into definitely but I’ve not yet had any issues.
I do however clean 99% of it off once it’s dry tho.
I've seen the plasticiser from the PVC literally melt XPS and glue it onto the cable. And before you say "Overload, that was heat damage!": half the cables that had the issue were coax, so no real current going through them. The cable was fine, it was the XPS that deteriorated.
An old spark told me they used to go on an angle just to save on cable evidently !
