Trilok's the man. Been listening to him for over 35 years, saw him live a couple times, by himself, with that wonderful trio with McLaughlin... etc... he is pure and 100% magical.
Very, very nice - thank you, Billys. Track 5 is the title track from a Miroslav Vitous album - the first I heard him. Love that album. It has the great Joe Henderson (RIP) on tenor sax and John McLaughlin on guitar - probably my favorite version of Freedom Jazz Dance - great outside version. I instantly fell in love with MV's bass playing. This vid also shows his wonderful playing, and of course Terje's and Trilok's. My first awareness of Terje Rypdal was buying the album, After The Rain - an eery, haunting, pulsing album that is perfect for when you've stayed up all night and it's 4:30am. Ah, memories....
I only found out about Terje Rypdal about 10 years ago in a mates HUGE vinyl collection and his 70's period albums get regularly played. Likewise I found trilok gurtu on the john mclaughlin album and was simply blown away I had never heard percussion like that before.
I need to begin listening to Rypdal more...his sheets of atmosphere always take hold of me. Trilok is simply fantastic crossing cultural genres with ease. Vitous, always sharing his insight with us. I first heard Baba with the John McLaughlin Trio....nice to hear still alive.
theres an ECM album withTerje...Trilok Gurtu...and instead of Vitous on bass...it's Barre Phillips. Album is called "Three Day Moon". Around 1978 release. It's an atmospheric journey...(studio embellishments and all)...but it's another "must hear" if you like this guitarist. Gurtu is also a virtuoso on Eastern percussion...all these cats are at the top of the realm of instrumentalists.
I heard this great Guitar player Terje Rypdal many years ago with Yan Christensen on Drums ECM record so beautiful sound, Trilok Gurtu is also wonderful in this expressive music
Rypdal is a great musican and has the special ECM Norway Viking sound from the High North Mountan and vallys. Vitous and Rypdal goes way back and have also made great special EC; sound music with Jack Dejonette
Have u heard his stuff from 70-76that stuff is amazing. Also there's a performance on here of them playing on a t.v channel I think called NRK and that performance is really good
First discovered Terje in 1979 with the legendary Miroslav Vitous and Masterful Jack Dejohnette...a timelessly incredible piece of work on the ECM label . And then came the amazing Trilok with one of my long time guitar heroes , John McLaughlin...Trilok is a phenomenon unto himself
check out another ECM release from that timeframe..."3 Day Moon"...with Rypdal...Gurtu...and Barre Phillips on upright bass. It's another under the radar gem. It's a Barre Phillip's album...(as opposed to Rypdal or Gurtu...but all 3 contribute equally.
the track "Kompet Gar" from that album...is MASSIVE. The kind of guitar work that causes wave after wave of goosebumps to ripple down your forearms. It could blow away a lot of well known "rock" guitarist's best "a-game"...easily.
Rypdal is one of my main musical influences (along w/ Jan Akkerman, Allan Holdsworth, among others). This video (I've had the dvd for yours) is a master class.
it was several days of struggle to finally find it!! no joking :D a guy showed me this show like 5 years ago and just a week ago I felt a void in my heart... and I started an impossible journey xD
I discover Rypdal because of Vitous, I don't know if he always have this sound, I just wished an hollowbody guitar for him without a rock 1970 sound, anyway that is interesting
I know! I spotted that right away. Makes you think about the vain guitarists that have to have a company make them a signature model to their specs. Oh boy! But, I know you can find a guitar that just fits perfectly....Terje looks comfortable with it. And the effects make a contribution to his overall sound. Where's that Squire of mine ....!
3 of my favorite musicians. This show sounds great and it's great to hear them together. Terje and Miroslav recorded with Jack DeJohnette. Does anyone know of a studio album by Terje, Trilok, and Miroslav?
LOG DRUM (also called Slit Drum, is an idiophone usually carved in wood or constructed in a resonant wooden box. On the surface there are some woodden tongues that can be struct to play a simple melody.)
+Cento I have bee3n inspired by Trilokgurtu ever since I saw him at the montreal Jazz Festival in 1989 with Johnny McLaughlin and Kai Ekhert on bass and I have never ever been the same since. I am a jazz drummer and I play a lot of different drum set styles and different types of music and it was him who taught me to be open to the experience of everything in the universe being able to be played as a percussive experience: a drumming event.
My all time favorite live show, Trilok and Terje are two of my three most favorite musicians with Miles being the other. MV is great too. I have the DVD of this. Wayside Music has it cheap.
Trilok's the man. Been listening to him for over 35 years, saw him live a couple times, by himself, with that wonderful trio with McLaughlin... etc... he is pure and 100% magical.
yes, I saw him in Mclaughin trio....with electric bassist...
A magical concert...the way these three gel is incredible. Gurtu is like an entire weather system!
vitous, must be one of the best bassists of the 20th century. love gurtu and rypdal
HE IS.
stick with Mingus !
That's music for living souls.Greatfully!

magnifique
Tremendous. When Miroslav plays "folk" melodies (as I say), the feeling is so bright. His playing is beautiful throughout. Thanks for posting this.

Thanks for posting this beautiful performance. The Return of Per Ulv is addictive !
What a great melody!
I like how Rypdal is always ready to explode on the improvisation.
I only found out about Terje Rypdal about 10 years ago in a mates HUGE vinyl collection and his 70's period albums get regularly played. Likewise I found trilok gurtu on the john mclaughlin album and was simply blown away I had never heard percussion like that before.

Yes! I love Miroslav, Terje and Jack for that ECM sound. And Surman and Christensen.

Oh yes, familiar with that as well-Great album-THANKS
Also recommend Ketil Bjørnstad's The Sea (ECM 1545) with David Darling and Jon Christensen.
I had been looking for this. Thanks! This is great stuff. They are all such wonderful players.
Oh my goodness! Never stop exploring...
remember seeing this very trio probably in this very period, highly impressed ever since
que elegancia de musicos!!! Terje le saca un sonido unico a su guitarra Vitus es un musico estupendo asi como Gurtu
Have always loved Terje and this is a reason why! Wow!
I’ve enjoyed this video for some time but, I’ve been overlooking how good Vitous is in this show!
loved the "blue-album".....om bare is great, TR is just outstanding
the track "Kompet Gar" from that album...is MASSIVE. The kind of guitar work that causes wave after wave of goosebumps to ripple down your forearms. It could blow away a lot of well known "rock" guitarist's best "a-game"...easily.
Miroslav Vitous totally underrated - one of the very best ...
Terje 'Magic' Rypdal... That man is a musical genius ;-)
Well put! 👍
what music , what a percussionist ,he blows my mind and puts a smile on my face :)
A wonderful upload-three master craftsmen creating music of great power, beauty and mystery.
A magnificent piece of art. thanks for sharing.
Wow, this sounds good! I was expecting nothing less, of course, but still... wow! Thanks for sharing this.

BELLEZA E INSPIRACIÓN , DEJA SIN PALABRAS Y FOMENTA LA IMAGINACIÓN.

Vitous is the end no one can surpass him.
Nice, great music, great 👍 musicians
Totally inspirational as are the Esbjorn Svenson trio.
Fantastic groove .

This is mind blowing!!
Wow!!!

He's playing a Squier!!

It’s not how much money you put into a guitar, it’s how much work you put into it.
Mr Gurtu is right up there with Mickey Hart and Carl Palmer, imho
This is so awesome... why doesn't it has millions of klicks? Does the trio still exist?
pura machaca!
3 of my favorite musicians. This show sounds great and it's great to hear them together. Terje and Miroslav recorded with Jack DeJohnette. Does anyone know of a studio album by Terje, Trilok, and Miroslav?
