  • In which Hank talks about his Sidewalk Moment.
    This video was initially around a minute longer, and most of what I talked about was:
    1. How that comment about interviewing sidewalks weirdly made me see the world in a different way.
    2. A little more about making things with the understanding that they are bigger than you and your life and that that is the most rewarding way I have found to experience creation.
    3. A little about the history of Missoula, which tripled in population between 1900 and 1910, which is why a lot of sidewalks were laid down in the 1910s and 1920s.
    4. A little about how Missoula treats these maker stamps. Everyone sorta unanimously tries to protect them, so you'll walk around and entire sidewalks will have been replaced, but the one square that has the makers stamp will have been left, even if it's a little cruddy and eroded and cracked. Sometimes, when they have to be replaced, people will even cut the stamp out and sink it in the ground next to the sidewalk.

      Well, I don't know about the US, but where I live, Sidewalks are actually Part of the street. I'm from Germany and our streets are devidet into different areas. The whole Thing ist called street ("Straße" in German). The Part of the Street, where Cars Drive ist called "Fahrbahn" ( Roadway in english I guess). The Part where people Walk ist called "Bürgersteig" (Sidewalk in english). There are other parts of the street, Like "Parkstreifen" or "Einfahrt" but the ones I named above, are the Most Importamt ones. To get your drivers license ("Führerschein" in German) you have to know this stuff in Germany.

    Dumb story, I loved it. If you ever get to Great Falls, look for a street corner laid in 1952 that says "Ron 🖤 Carol". We were both 6. Carol died that year & I moved away in 1953. A different perspective: I navigate with a guide cane. All those differences in sidewalks that you mention? You have NO IDEA. There are a couple dozen distinctly different sidewalk textures / sounds / patterns between me and my closest subway stop alone. All those differences make for great landmarks. If you want to make a blind person amazed at how good your directions are some time, give them in terms of the sidewalk - including things like slopes, tree-root bumps, fixed garbage cans, etc.

    • @leilak.8461
      @leilak.8461 3 роки тому +1

      here in the UK, cities legally *have* to create those tactile differences in some sidewalk sections--it's so that people who are blind can feel bumps in the pavement and realise that a crosswalk is available and/or the road is nearby and/or the train platform edge is approaching!

    • @saizai
      @saizai 3 роки тому +2

      @@leilak.8461 I'm blind and live in London. I actually use the tactile paving, all the time. I don't know what specifically is required or not, though; the Equality Act isn't that explicit, and not all intersections, steps, or rail platforms have them. I suppose it might be stated somewhere in building code (I've not checked), or a council/borough/regulator based rule…

    Unsarcastically, genuinely, this is my favourite video you have ever made. I'm glad Im not the only one who thinks about stuff like this. I get the same thing from initials carved on trees and benches, and from those little sign out slips in library books. Theres a restaurant in town here that opened in a location that was a restaurant, but was abandoned for years and years. When they were renovating, they found tons of the order slips the servers filled out, so they put those under acrylic on all the tables as decoration. I went for lunch with my grandma, who worked at the old restaurant back then, and she actually found a few that she had written. It was a wonderful thing, thanks for making me think of it!

    • @shannovi4565
      @shannovi4565 6 років тому +4

      Kerfuffles92 I think about it all too, quite seriously. I do notice maker's marks in sidewalks, building cornerstones, and I'm especially fascinated by the stamps and notations on 100+ year old photos, and when an old house is renovated and they find newspapers in the walls. The story about the old restaurant order slips is just the kind of thing I love.

    A months ago, just before Winter Break, I was wandering around outside in the snow, while the rest of my school was inside at the big winter assembly. The reasons why are very complicated, but suffice to say I was sad about a lot of stuff. But as I came out of the woods onto this little pasture, I noticed a bunch of young trees growing, each with a little sign and fence. I walked up to the nearest one, brushed the snow of it's sign, and surprisingly, it said my name on it. "Isaac Lichtenstein, 2013" And I remembered going out into the woods one day with a bunch of other kids and this teacher I had just met, and planting all these trees together, because the teacher had asked for help and I had naturally responded yes. And now I was standing in front of this tree I had planted, alone, years later, that I had totally forgotten about. And I cried a bit, and then I felt better, and since then I've been feeling a lot better. I'm not particularly sure why.

    I get such a bittersweet feeling watching something like this now. It's now been seventy-one years since this video was uploaded, and in many ways, it has become a print in a sidewalk, at least for those of us in 2089. They're laying concrete sidewalks in some undercities, and I imagine some of them will have steps on them too, and who knows, maybe up in the 4000m zone, there might be sidewalks there too, some that are as old as this video, or as old as the footprint in the sidewalk from this video. Gosh thinking about time just makes me emotional.

    The people who lived in my house before me had kids who left little hand prints in the driveway cement. When I was little I'd compare my hands to the ones in the driveway. I remember when they lined up perfectly. The kids who left those must be 30-40 years old by now. They also left coins on top of some of the windows, a new one for every year.I'm pretty sure it's a lucky thing. I didn't take them down, but added a coin every year just like they did. Judging by how little space is left on the windowsill, I should have very good luck by now. It gives me a similar sort of feeling. Someone grew up here before I did.

    I like it too, Hank. My "sidewalk story" came at a Gasometer in London. Gasometers are monstrous tanks that used to hold a city's gas supply before high pressure piping was as prevalent as it is today. Now, this hulking shell was turned into a beautiful park a short walk from King's Cross. There was a grassy ring in the center where I could lie on my back, and I could see the Gasometer rising around me. It was weird to think of all the people who came before and relied on this steel behemoth to keep them warm, and all the men who worked day and night to keep it in check. Everyone who ever worked that gasometer has probably long passed, but in the heart of one of the world's busiest cities it remains as a testament to something that came before, a collective memory not quite passed out of existence.

    As an archaeology student, I have learned to discern the history of things. If you know how and where to look, it is extremely fascinating to see the different building phases of buildings around you, especially in Amsterdam. But also stuff like sidewalks, canals, city planning, and some of the Roman stuff lying around in the Netherlands. So I completely understand this video, and I too marvel at the physical evidence of people and their lives, even though they have been gone for centuries. I feel this way about inscriptions in old books. A "do not steal" poem or a birthday greeting or even just a name.
    Or, like, I worked with a medieval manuscript where the scribe drew little faces in the margins of some pages, and added a paragraph about personally visiting a plague graveyard in London, and it's like... "Hi, Person From 600 Years Ago. I see you."

    Wow. One of my new favourite Vlogbrothers videos. I love thinking about this sort of thing, and I love that you managed to put into words that weird connection with a human who will never know you existed in a way that made me pause and feel that weird low-key happiness myself.
    A memory from my tweenhood: I went to Bath (a place in the UK with a lot of Roman baths) quite a few years ago, and I still remember that my absolute favourite thing was the little scratch marks we were shown on some of the stones that were made by the people who'd constructed the buildings to mark their work. These people were often illiterate, which is why they didn't write any words, but it just astounded and excited me that here was a marker of an actual human person doing a very human thing from two-thousand years ago.
    Thanks for sharing your sidewalk story and for, in doing so, sharing your connection with that small child in 1910. DFTBA.

    I don't watch your videos consistently. But I honestly think that this was one of the best videos you've made. Imagine a toddler has, in a way, been immortalized by this sidewalk (or pavement where I come from). And imagine that growing up, they might have thought nothing of it except as a fond memory. Yet, here you are Hank, highlighting a life, a person, who perhaps never once thought that they could leave a legacy and that this would be it. Sometimes, our most impactful moments are the ones we're not even aware of. (Sorry about the long post. This just makes me feel things.)

    If any other youtuber (except for, you know, your brother :) ) had announced at the beginning of the video that they are going to talk about sidewalks, I would have thought 'Sidewalks? I mean, SIDEWALKS...?' But coming from you, I just knew it would be totally worth it, and it was :) When I feel down, I often try to remind myself that I am not my degree or my job (even though I am happy about both of them in general), and not even how I am feeling right now, but rather I am what I choose to do for others (friends, family, my students, strangers) - from the most insignificant smile or kind word to donations or volunteering. Those things are my sidewalk - the things that will connect me to others even when I'm not around.

    This is one of the many reasons why I am so grateful to be a living human at this point in time and space. There are so many fellow living things making their presence known, and the Internet, in its current state, allows individuals to send their thoughts and feelings out into the world, to be seen and felt by others. We have so many ways in which to leave our marks, and I would like to thank the person who suggested that Hank interview a sidewalk, because they contributed in part to the creation of this video. Everything we experience is a temporary state of the microcosm of the universe that we inhabit, and oh how glorious it is to love what is mortal.

    I love the reminder that not everything needs to be big and flashy and there are so many little things everyday that we don’t even think about that connects people. Most recently I was reminded of this at my college apartment mail box. It’s the kind of place where people live for two years then graduate. Anyway when we first moved in our mailbox had stickers of all the people who had lived there before us going back like six years. One of them had a Wired magazine subscription they forgot about so we still get the magazine. My engineering major roommate loves it.

    "I don't have context to that person's life but what I do have is knowledge that they were there" YES. I get really weird an existential in that exact same way! Like when I visited the colosseum in Rome and thought about how far back people had been gathering there and how my life overlapped in that space with a billion other lives and each of us billion people went on to live a different life after leaving that place. I love moments like that.

    I love this video for so many reasons #1 Just little kid feet, they are the cutest and I don’t understand how all humans were that small at one point. #2 This thing you captured in this video is my literal favorite thing about living, connecting with as many people as possible and people that I would never had connected with if I hadn’t gone out of my way. #3 I love that you, and others, notice little things like this. I love noticing these little things and researching them and it drives my friends crazy because I’m always telling them useless facts. Anyways, great video Hank! Also I need to pet that kitty:

    When my grandmother passed a little over a year ago, my grandfather's VHS collection eventually made it to me. This past week I've finally gotten to the point where I have a VCR working and hooked up, and I've been working to copy all of these old home videos from the 80's and 90's to my computer so I can upload them to the internet and share them with the family no matter how far away they are. As I've been going through them, I've found that it's not the bits that are planned that have the most value, but rather the casual and accidental moments in life that keep showing up that really matter. It's been an incredible experience going through and seeing this record of times I was too young to remember, and getting to flesh out the image of who my grandparents were a little bit more. For some reason, the kid strolling along the wet concrete in 1909 gives me a very similar experience. It's all a great reminder that you don't know when a memory that will be cherished will come up, and that the imperfections and mistakes are ultimately what will hold the most value.

    There is a ghost town about a mile from where I currently sit called Noland, Colorado. Around the turn of the 20th century, it was a thriving quarry town. The quarry produced red sandstone for sidewalks and even supplied the pavers that are still present around the National Cathedral in Washington, DC. There were over a thousand people living there in 1906 when someone figured out how to make concrete sidewalks. By 1918 the town had completely vanished, buildings and all.

    When you allow yourself to be this sweet and vulnerable with us, it’s shocking. Not necessarily compared to your other videos, but against the world as a whole and its reliance on irony and its fear of emotion. Small things like this video help break down those barriers far more than a sweeping story with a grandiose message ever could. This is real. It’s genuine. It’s so much more than it appears, yet it’s still, at its core, just a story about some footprints in a sidewalk. This was wonderful, and it‘s giving me a feeling of hope during a time in my life in which I don’t have much of that. Thank you, Hank.

    I used to be on a concrete canoe engineering project team in college, so I'm glad someone has taken the time to look at concrete sidewalk in such detail.
    But, I have a correction: Cement is not concrete; cement is one component of concrete (i.e. when mixed with water, it forms a paste that holds all of the aggregate together). They are not synonymous!
