Here is MY theory on this...The popularity of any artist/band comes from TWO elements: 1) Talent, 2) Image. For example, look at Elton John and Billy Joel, both hugely talented, but Elton also played on an image (loud clothes, performance antics, etc.), while Billy Joel was all about talent, very little "image" beyond some nice music videos back in the day. With that being said, "my" definition of an overrated artist or band is one that relies mostly on image and little on talent. So, by that very definition, prog will rarely have an overrated band, since prog by its very nature is so much based on talent and skill of the musicians. You can't fake prog and get very far with prog fans, but pop artists do it all the time. Therefore, you are 100% correct Scot, there really are NO overrated prog bands, IMHO. Tons of UNDERrated ones though. PS: Great shirt!!!
Maybe the question should be “Among Prog fans, which bands are overrated?” You’re absolutely right that Prog really isn’t popular enough to be overrated
Yes, that avoids the issue of bands that have put out a lot of albums and who have a bunch of “meh” ones that off-set the many classics they also produced.
Hi Scott. Great channel. Love your enthusiasm!! Breath of fresh air. There are no over rated bands. Agree with you. We all have different ears. I love bands that others don’t get and others like massive prog bands that I just don’t get. There are NO over rated bands. We like what we like.
Great video Scot!!! And Focus, Finch, Kayak, Premiata Forneria Marconi, Le Orme, Banco del Mutuo Soccorso, Triumvirat, Area, Soft Machine, Camel, Caravan, Hatfield & The North, National Health, Renaissance, Curved Air, Asia Minor, Ragnarok, José Cid, Gentle Giant, Van der Graaf Generator, Strawbs, Gryphon, Hawkwind, Barclay James Harvest, Manfred Mann's Earth Band, Bacamarte, Anglagaard, The Flower Kings, Kaipa, Procol Harum, Matching Mole, Jade Warrior, Egg, The Enid, Nektar, Eloy, Wobbler, Big Big Train, Moon Safari and so many others are not overrated, in fact many of them are underrated, they deserved much more attention. See you, I'll try to show up next Sunday!!! PS: And I think "The Dark Side Of The Moon" is not overrated and if it is, well I would say the album deserves it!!!!
Totally irrelevant comment, nothing to do with this video but...I purchased the an import CD of the album by Refugee (because you recommended it) and I finished listening to it about an hour ago. Ye gods, it's really impressive! The 'missing' album by The Nice. Papillon, Grand Canyon and Credo are utterly superb. THANK YOU for letting me know this album existed as I'd never even heard of it, despite liking The Nice. PS I posted a disc of our eccentric music to your box number a couple of days ago. Alas, I forgot to include any headache pills, for which I humbly apologise.
I was typing my comment as you were doing this video but wiped it as you were saying exactly what I was typing. All the bands mentioned had periods where their output wasn't that great, but all deserve their rating (and sales) amongst the prog community. Some may not be very keen on every one of those bands but I hope that anyone reading this can appreciate the high quality of at least some of their albums. No such thing as an overrated prog band.
When you have a band that has 10 or more albums. I would argue that they are most likely a very different than when they started. I definitely think that different eras of certain bands are overrated. And certain areas of certain bands are underrated. But I haven't been able to escape the fact that beloved bands are not the same band that I started out loving. But more times than not it comes down to the fact that I am not the same person that originally loved particular bands.
@@TheProgCorner I just don't think that it's fair to make blanket statements about music. For me I either like it or not. Saying that I don't like certain music or albums is a more honest statement. I don't think that Rush or King Crimson ever made albums or crap. I think Rush on occasion made some crappy Rush albums.
You should do a video, if you have not already, on most underrated prog bands, as that would be a more apt question. Or, alter that slighrly and do, which bands are underated at being a prog band.
I surmise a perspective from this video that I appreciate: That, when a band actually creates an couple of really good records (or one.. or 7).. that you can then just forget about trying to "rate" their general or holistic output (if that were even sensible to begin with). Because, How many bands pull that off? Even one great record? Much less more.. and plus potentially touring behind those great record(s). That's bloody rare.. If a band does this, they can quit, buy a scarf set or "sell out", even if it hurts our feelings (that's our fault). They reached tenure. :-) And of course they'll catch flack from people wasting their time to speak about the releases that were not as strong, even after all the lifeblood given to the listeners.
Hi Scot, I think that it depends on what you like and what you don't, like with me there are some bands that I don't like ,I have tried to get into them but It just doesn't work 😊
Jethro Tull I've seen a few videos of them on UA-cam: I always hope someone will clamber on stage from the audience, knee him in the balls and say "Try playing flute standing on one leg now, you smug bastard!"
Well said, Scott. Andy Edwards simply likes to put out material he knows will irk people and there are few fanbases bigger than Pink Floyd's you can irk with crap like calling them overrated. It's also not the first time he's had a pop at them either. I'd probably say that most of the bands on your list are now underrated, as very few of them are known beyond the prog sphere.
I think Andy Edwards was spot on about Pink Floyd. They mostly bore me to tears. The drumming annoys me. The vocals are poor. Gilmore is a nice sounding guitar player. The lyrics are mostly grim.
Edwards likes to hear himself talk and his videos are way too long. But that is his intention. Pink Floyd overrated? That's the most absurd thing I've ever heard. Long live prog. NO underrated Prog bands!
We all have our own favourites in the genre don't we... possibly certain bands that have been around since the dawn of time , and lost and regained 'form' , because of style changes and personnel changes could well be living on past glories I suppose. Maybe it could be seen this way , but Overated...I can't see how this would be applicable to our genre. Very interesting video Scot. Maybe that's the beauty of Prog...it doesn't really appeal to the general masses , so overated isn't warranted. Many thanks again !!! 😍
That’s right. Our little tribe is so niche that even bands I don’t personally like deserve the term “overrated.” That makes it kind of special. The masses didn’t deserve CTTE in 1972 and THEY STILL DON’T!!!
I agree! Pink Floyd is probably the only Prog band that's not UNDERrated (but also not overrated, they are right where they belong). Even Genesis or Yes are underrated in my opinion. Not nearly enough people know them (especially their prog stuff).
I would like to hear the argument that Dark Side is overrated. It represents one of the big moments in my musical education in the late 70s when I first encountered it. Having not listened to it for more than a couple of years I put it on quite recently, and I can say quite categorically that it does not yet represent a part of my juvenile self that I look back on with any kind of scorn. And I was a mixed up emotional mess for the first 30 years of my life! I think Andy Edwards - much as I am amused by and enjoy his content - he is something of a musical snob.
The whole idea of being overrated is a bit ridiculous, especially regarding music (which is so subjective). What most people mean when they say a band is overrated is that they just don't like a band that is liked by a whole lot of people. In general, bands are 'rated' exactly where they should be, because people like the music they like, and that determines that general consensus of opinion and the overall 'rating'. If someone really loves a band that has been deemed 'overrated' by someone on UA-cam, is that person wrong for loving that band? NO, of course not! These bands are 'rated' high because people love their music! Just because some people may not like it does not make it overrated, it just means that person's view is in the minority. Hey, it's OK to like what you like, and not like what you don't.
Hi Scot. After the death of Dickey Betts, I started reading about The Allman Brothers and saw this quote from Betts referring to people calling them a Southern Rock band: "I think it's limiting. I'd rather just be known as a progressive rock band from the South. I'm damned proud of who I am and where I'm from, but I hate the term 'Southern rock.'" What do you think? I never hear anyone refer to them as prog, but you know, there's something to be said for it. Listen to Eat a Peach. The song Les Brers in A Minor is definitely prog. And how about Mountain Jam? At the least I was say they are crossover prog.
Hi Scot. Great vid. Couldn't agree more. Of all the Prog UA-camrs, you are the one I agree with the most. It's very useful for me because when you recommend a band or an album I know I'm gonna like it.
Andy does an album-by-album analysis of Spinal Tap that is MUST watch. He argues - convincingly - that "Stonehenge is the greatest prog song ever made (selected by ELP, Yes, and Genesis, no less).
I think context can have a lot to do with whether or not a Prog band is overrated. ELP would be a classic example. While legions of arena obsessives got off on their theatrical manipulation of classical music through rock as well as sheer grandiosity, in certain sectors of the rock world they were seen as bloated, hyper-virtuosic simps who were the final word on Prog. Speaking as a survivor of their Works tour, I can still appreciate some of their early music. But then, other music they made would send me running to my CD collection for a Stooges album to heal my psyche. They've always been a problem for me.
Agreed. I think ELP started out great, but they ran out of steam pretty quickly, and unlike Genesis and Yes, they failed to adapt to the changes in the music scene toward the end of the '70s. (ATTW3 and Tormato may be lackluster albums, but they're nowhere near as embarrassing as Love Beach.)
I agree with your take that none of the ten are overrated. I think that, perhaps, the degree to which a person may feel a prog band is underrated correlates with that person's musical knowkedge. After all, simple rhythms and catchy, pleasant melodies are preferred by those who do not want to or cannot put the work in to understand the more complex and dissonant work. Prog can be challenging, after all, and calling a band overrated when it has proven success may just be a cop out. 12:55
To be honest. I think Pink Floyd is overrated and i really like this band. I have all pink Floyd records on CD or Vinyl, Sometimes both or more. It was my start Into prog Rock but nowadays i think old Genesis, Yes are way better. But thats just my opinion. And Tool is 100% prog. Long Songs, polymetric, polyrhythm, odd time Signatures. What else is prog?
The more I read these comments, the more I am convinced that the concept of „overrrated“ makes no sense for music. How do people dare to judge the taste of other people? For me the Rolling Stones are overrrated, really, what is the fuss about them? I don‘t like their music! So that means they are overrrated? Probably not, otherwise they would not have had the success they had…. so the whole concept of „overrated“ makes no sense… Overrated can only and always be subjective, there is no objective concept in music for that term!
When I hear "OverRated prog" I think did that band have more proggy songs than pop songs or the standard 4x4 timing and cut don't song times to the 3min duration. Are the bands great at music and their instuments. Proggy bands have to have great real musicians that write and play more complex songs with a wider ary of instruments. Over rated would be too popular for their content. Take Vanilla Ice, he'd be over rated if he was considered the best rap artist of the 90s. But when I hear Pink Floyd, Genesis yes and the Imperial of Prof Rush, these guys are masters of modern music, no matter how popular they are or get, they mastered their instuments, their music writing and most importantly they influenced most of what you hear on rock radio today. So no way is Rush over rated. Even Eddie Van Halen said it best when asked what it feels like to be the greatest guitarist alive, he said, " Idk ask Alex Lifeson!". Boys that tells you something about being a master musician. Great episode man, I always look so forward to your ever impressionists reveiws! Great hat!!!
UK - the most overrated prog band. I bought the first album in the first week of release, was very disappointed in its blandness. Over the years gave it a few listens, but my opinion never changed. These days UK often get a mention in UA-camr top 50 prog bands...I really can't see why.
I think there are definitely individual songs or records from prog groups that are overrated ("The Wall" would be an example from my perspective. Thought-provoking album, but it's so weird to me that a narrative about a guy turning into a Nazi through self-isolation after becoming a rock star because of his rough childhood is SOMEHOW one of the greatest albums ever made...?), but there isn't really a band in the genre, on the whole, that I could say counts. Prog, by its very definition, is a niche genre and meant to be both underground in its exposure (how "rated" it is) and tongue-in-cheek in terms of how seriously we should take it, so there can't really be a band that is "overrated" as a whole in the genre. But if I had to pick ONE classic band that I think is rated higher by others than I'd personally rate them, it's Camel. I LOVE Andy Latimer's guitar playing, and I think "Mirage" is a fantastic record. But I could honestly never get into anything else they put out. I tried so, so hard to enjoy Camel, but other than "Mirage", their music consistently left me feeling empty. Which is a shame because they inspired some of my favourite modern bands like Opeth.
I've suggested before... Before asking that question you've got to define what prog is? To my mind anything that isn't verse chorus, verse chorus, repeat 1st verse, chorus, is progressive, and that covers a lot nowadays.
Marillion: contains the answers to the questions: Who can't pronounce his own nickname? Who can't spell his surname? Who ate all the pies? Which Cornish piskie plays the bass? Who was in a band with someone who was in a band with Sonja Kristina? Who did a much better job of accepting premature baldness than did Martin Barre? Which band is really popular with people who don't understand Prog?
I think more to the point, what bands (artists) do people do a knee jerk 'oh yeah, they're great' reaction to because that is what they think is expected. Or.....keep their real thoughts to themselves in case they're thought of as a fool. I'm not one of those, so I'm happy to opine that Frank Zappa is overrated and that includes his guitar playing. Blasphemy!!
Pink Floyd for sure... Also Gentle Giant. I remember when I was just starting out in prog I couldn't go anywhere without being asked if I'd listened to them yet, though I only followed through within the past month....HAIL As for the bigger bands, they're not overrated as a whole (especially given the fact that Prog is still somewhat underground) but there are a few eras in the career of each that get more attention than others. Take, for example, some of the bands in my PROG HEXAGON: The #1 most overrated Genesis album is Selling England. There, I said it. Unlike Nursery Cryme and Foxtrot, Selling England took me a while to acclimate to. For Yes, I'd only call the stretch from Fragile to Relayer overrated because of Howe worshippers who have thrown praise to that era like no tomorrow. (Obvs, nothing against the man.) At least I'm with the crowd with regards to the Moodies and ELP (although I do like SUR LA MER and Love Beach).
I personally would say ELP is overrated. For me they had too many weak moments and they are often mentioned in the same category as Yes, Pink Floyd or Genesis.
Overrated = A popular artist that other people/music critics like/appreciate that you don't like/appreciate...your milage may vary personified. Perhaps just saying " I don't get this artist " would be more appropriate. The overrated label can also come from the radio hits that have overplayed over the years. All in all... exasperated sigh
I totally agree that no prog bands are overrated. There's probably some bands that are overrated in the prog community though. But a bigger question would be, what are the most UNDERrated prog bands? That could be a whole other video. Gentle Giant would definitely be at #1. There'd be a bunch of obscure bands on that list.
I don't like using the term "overrated". But out of the most popular prog bands, the ones I really don't get why prog listeners are so mad about them are: Cardiacs and Tangerine Dream.
I think describing Pop-Rock era Genesis as overrated is totally subjective. I guess by going down the more commercial route, they put themselves on a pedestal and open to being knocked off it by the Prog fraternity, but they’re very much a gateway band into Progressive music. I know a number of folks who got into the Pop era stuff first and then went backwards into their discography. Prog fans now. A much more interesting subject to me are those underrated Prog bands that have material in their discography that crosses genres and should be more widely heard and enjoyed by the masses. I mean, why the hell are Big Big Train still playing tiny venues? It’s almost criminal that that band isn’t more widely known outside of the Prog sphere.
If we narrow the scope to what gets thrown around specifically within prog circles, I think Pink Floyd, Tool, Caligula’s Horse, and Dream Theater are the only bands that get talked about a bit too much. And I have reasons for each of anyone cares: Pink Floyd can be boiled down to the world’s best Psych rock band and while their music is amazing, it doesn’t feel right to stand them up next to bands like King Crimson, Van Der Graaf Generator, or Gentle Giant when those bands were so forward thinking. Tool has a very unique sound but to me it all blends together and isn’t as captivating as many people say. Dream Theater is a band I love but their best works have been watered down by several mediocre releases. And Caligula’s Horse is all over “prog metal” forums and the subreddit despite sounding to my ear like a jazzless, weaker Haken.
Not much to add that other commenters have not already brought up I think it was a foregone conclusion that there are no overrated prog bands. I think Kansas and Gentle Giant are definitely the most underrated but that's no fun. To me there is one overrated prog band and that is Genesis. Even in their heyday, when they were "my band" I knew that Tony Banks couldn't hold a candle to Rick Wakeman, Michael Rutherford was a weak imitation of Chris Squire and Steve Howe could play circles around Steve Hackett. I had a hard time defending them against hardcore Yes and ELP fans. Phil Collins remains, to this day, my favorite drummer of all time. When Peter Gabriel left and they lost their progressive edge I lost interest in them and still don't understand their popularity as a pop band, but who am I to argue with the hoi polloi? Pink Floyd maybe too because they relied on 2 or 3 chords for most of their songs but are they really a prog band or just a sardonic pop outfit?
@@TheProgCorner I am here to tell you I have never heard Phil Collins play drums on any Brand X Album. Imagine that my favorite drummer and yet I have never heard any of his work beyond Genesis. That either makes me a liar or naive. Thank you I will go listen to my favorite drummer of all time play some drums I have never heard.
I agree Scot their is no prog. Rock bands overrated. Pink Floyd is one of favourite, but like you said "Dark side of the Moon" could be overrated but not the band.
How an album recorded 50 years ago and still sound timeless today could be considered overated is ridiculous. It is and always will be a milestone in recorded music. Some people don't know the difference between overrated and overplayed.
"Overrated" is one of those buzzwords that makes my hackles rise a bit, honestly. For one, artistic taste in any medium is always going to be subjected so someone is always going to disagree with any one person's list. For another, if enough people say something is overrated that it becomes a common thing to say... is it actually overrated? And while you can say the same with underrated, at least that brings positive attention to something that can use it rather than just dunking on something you know other people like to look better than them. And that's not even getting into the nuance that people forget that something being overrated doesn't mean it's not still good. Like, are there popular things I don't get the appeal of? Of course. But it takes a lot more than just not being my cup of tea before I feel comfortable saying others shouldn't like it, and then I'll have a lot more specific criticism than it being "overrated". As for popular prog I don't like as much as others do... I dunno, I don't get Genesis that much, Nursery Cryme in particular I just don't remember much other than the production being thin, maybe another listen will help? And while I do really appreciate that The Wall is a good and important album, it's not one I find myself enjoying as much as other Floyd albums - the story is a bit haphazardly told at points and a bunch of tracks feel pretty fillery to me. While I'll admit Neal Morse's religious focus chafes with me a bit, there are a lot more things I didn't get about Snow compared to the first five Beard albums. (Or even something even more overtly religious - Transatlantic's Stranger in Your Soul, which I actually kinda like despite being about as annoyed by religion as it gets... Weird. I will say I'm at least willing to give Morse a chance since he doesn't seem as much into the parts of religion I'm more actively against, at least not publicly, but I'd be lying if I said I didn't have reservations.) And I balked at Caravan on first listen, but in my quest to explore more different prog I just heard "Where But For Caravan Would I?" for the first time and really enjoyed it, so maybe I'm coming around? Who knows? Either way, none of it's overrated, because even if it's not for me I can appreciate that others like it, and hey, if someone came along and said they find music I like overrated, I'd be annoyed by that, and I'd just rather not do that to them either.
I hear you about Neal. He claims to have lost about 50% of his fan base when he converted to Christianity. But he didn’t care. He did what he wanted to do - commercial success be damned!!! That’s pretty Prog.
@@TheProgCorner I mean, the comments about Neal's religion were a fairly minor part, just one I felt the need to overexplain and overqualify because it's such a sticky subject and I have strong opinions on it that aren't really about Morse (or even his religion in and of itself, but the broader social influence it has that I don't have any specific evidence he supports anyway). And like I said, Snow had other things about it that didn't really work for me even aside from the ending swerve, and I've liked songs both from Morse (the aforementioned Stranger in Your Soul) and from other bands like Dream Theater, Iron Maiden, Pattern-Seeking Animals, Symphony X, Seventh Wonder, and so on that are pretty strongly Christian in some way or another. And even if I find myself rolling my eyes at something like Along For the Ride, there's still stuff in there that's really thoughtful and introspective on the matter like Blind Faith or In the Name of God. Ultimately, I agree that I don't have to agree with everything about a song to like it (2112 being the obvious example), but it can still be a strike against it and enough of that at once will eventually become hard to look past. And I'd probably not actually care if there weren't the broader issues, and even with that I'm still giving him a chance at what I call the "Veggietales Zone" of still being well-done enough to enjoy despite the explicit religious messaging, even if it's not my favorite thing ever. (And my first exposure to him was in Flying Colors and I love all three of those albums, in any case. Especially Second Nature.) I don't really want to bring this up again, I just feel the need to fully explain it now that it has, since you can be pretty defensive of him and I wanted to make it clear I came by my feelings on him honestly. (To make it clear - I have practically nothing bad to say about the first five Beard albums, the first two Transatlantic albums, or any of the Flying Colors albums; Snow didn't really land for me even aside from the ending; I listened to the short version of The Absolute Universe a while ago and liked some of it, but got caught off guard at the ending and generally don't remember much, but I'm willing to try it again; I haven't heard anything else but I'm aware going into it what to expect so it should be fine - though I'll probably just acknowledge that the Testimony albums I probably won't get anything out of and stick to the ones I can just enjoy as a story like Similitude/Adventure, Joseph, Transatlantic, and so on.) I hope that all makes enough sense, and doesn't come off like an attack or a whine.
@@SomniRespiratoryFlux You know I love Neal but I don’t let that bias get in my way!!!! I know his message can be hard to swallow for some. Thank you for sharing your thoughts!!!! 👍👍❤️❤️
within the scope of music fans and listeners, most Prog isn't really overrated on a larger scale given it's often very obscure and unknown. On a smaller scale, and just within Prog fans, some of the names like Van Der Graaf and Camel I would say are overrated to some. Pink Floyd is slightly overrated given the enormous influence and importance they had on music, yet they released albums like The Wall and The Final Cut..even Dark Side is annointed the greatest record ever made, but I don't know if it really deserves such constant high praise. Especially since many people find other records they did better like Animals or Meddle or even Wish You Here to extent.
I love your content, but Andy has you beat on this one, IMO. I love Pink Floyd a lot but I understand his reasoning, and can even agree with it, even though there are a number of those classic period albums that I think are amazing. Doesn’t mean they aren’t great, just not as unimpeachably perfect as many say. Anyway, it’s more interesting viewing when you take some stances that may offend people. You didn’t go out on a single limb here! Again, nothing personal, I am a subscriber but I couldn’t give you a “like” on this one!
@@TheProgCorner It’s tricky with these big name, long-lived, bands. You can also have mixed feelings about Genesis and Yes if you examine their whole catalogs fairly. I really struggle with Yes because they are, without any challengers, my favorite prog band. That’s based on the strength of the classic period we all know and respect. But boy there are many years after that of material that is, at best, okay. Maybe one or two bright spots, but that’s it. At least that’s my feeling, and many agree. So how much does that affect the very high reputation that Yes earned up to and including 90125? That’s a tough question for a big fan to answer!
King Crimson is on the opposite side of the "overrated spectrum"...... I actually cannot think of a time, when those guy’s weren’t doing something interesting and innovative...... and like VERY FEW classic 70’s prog bands, they also brilliantly re-invented themselves during the 80’s(with Adrian Belew)
Genesis up until Foxtrot are defineatly overated, there's a reason those albums couldnt compete with what their peers where creating and while ELP, YES & even Focus where playing huge venues Genesis where second billing to Lindisfarne. I dont think they ever released a true masterpiece, everthing had some filler so I could argue they are overated period.
You have to remember that those guys were like 19 to 20 years old making nursery cryme and foxtrot, while their peers were a bit older. And genesis were arguably a tighter band too. Though I agree their prime was Selling England through Wind and Wuthering.
Tool is overrated and I don't even think they are a prog band but everybody always calls them a prog metal band. Is all you need to be a prog band is have long songs? Because long songs is the only thing they have in common with classic prog bands. They are a good band, but overrated. I would describe them as an alternative metal band with a 90's sound and longer songs later in their discography. Cheers.
I'm probably gonna get hate for this, but i kinda find Neal Morse overrated. Sure he's got some good songs and albums, but sometimes they get a little repetitive and formulaic and I'm not really a big fan of the Christian themes
I don’t like the Adrian Belew era in king Crimson… John Weston yes. Tool is Metal too me. I have 17 Marillion albums, only 2 albums I think they miss the mark and that’s in the Hogarth era. Pendragon I consider Marillion’s equal. Nick Barrett and Clive Nolan of Pendragon put on a show on DVD.
I could never get into Rush for some reason. They were certainly technically impressive, but to me they were lacking something that other prog bands had. I can't quite put my finger on it. I also might consider ELP overrated. Again, they had great chops, but they lacked the stylistic variety that the best prog bands had, and they ran out of steam pretty quickly after 1975.
OK. I get your point. Well considered. How about now putting to rest the use of the label “prog” when there are a majority of instances that easily fit into another category? Like Ultravox clearly being more of a new wave synth pop band? Don’t get me wrong. They’re great in that genre. Just barely prog, and that in only a handful of songs. Similarly, I find the category prog-adjacent lazy and rarely used by true historians. It needs to be discarded. If anyone can do this you can, Scot. And it might help with your healing need to stop calling things prog because you like them. Use criteria like this: Complicated structures, unique harmony, adventurous melodies, daring instrumentation, virtuosity, overall minimizing 4/4 and non human beats. Even with this analysis there is room for XTC but easy elimination of Traffic, for instance. This will be controversial and place you higher as the king arbiter of Prog promotion!
@@TheProgCorner This is why you are King! Integrity and Knowledge. No surprise your and my earliest commitment to prog was early Chicago. No one came close to their legendary blending of kick ass rock and sophisticated orchestration of blending genres and virtuosic execution. No one. To this day!
Being that overrated doesn't mean bad I'll say Pink Floyd and later Genesis. Maybe Rush also to some extent. As for Yes I think I don't think they are overrated.
@@TheProgCorner How about this. How many fans of Rush, Genesis and Pink Floyd haven't heard of Yes, ELP, PG era Genesis albums, King Crimson, GG etc. The fans of PF who are most of their fans are probably what make them overrated (in my mind anyway) and the same thing with Rush fans who only know the radio songs or Genesis fans who only know the later PC era. Casual fans bloating a bands popularity which I don't see much with Yes, KC, ELP or PG /SH era Genesis are what make these bands seem overrated in my opinion. The sad truth is most of these casual fans don't know what they are missing. More prog for us then. ;)
Every Prog band I can think of I got into because of the stuff I never heard of before. That’s what made me a fan. That would include Dream Theater, Genesis, Rush, Pink Floyd, all favorites of mine not by what I heard but what I discovered when diving deep into each band.
Who is the most overrated Prog reviewer? (When I first encountered you I was really annoyed by your habit of having the pause after "number 17" rather than before but I don't mind it now)
Question 1: are there underrated Prog bands? Sure! (Insert in the blank space the name of your second favorite band) IMHO a band that's overrated (starting with the band members having too high an opinion of themselves) is Muse. I'm not even sure if they're that good... They just leave me cold...
'Rush' are the Goldilocks band: neither underrated nor overrated. Sometimes good, sometimes bad, mostly genius. I'd include 'In the spirit of things' - a brilliant album, plus 'Power' and 'Drastic Measures'. 'Lateralus' is my top ten albums ever. 'Dark side' is definitely overrated; 'Wish you were here' and 'Animals' are far better albums.
How about most underrated prog bands? I would have Gunesh, Pesniary, J.A.Caesar, Geinoh Yamashirogumi, Eskaton, Samla Mammas Manna, Koenji Hyakkei, Bo Hansson, Comus, Flower Travellin Band, Haikara and Tipographica on my list.
@@bertkarlsson1421 I've heard of Samla Mammas Manna, Comus and Bo Hansson, but not of any of the others. I've listened to the Bo Hansson album but wasn't impressed.
If a mathematician had your enthusiasm, I could listen to him discuss the Pythagorean theorem. One quibble: I never got Marillion. Jester's Tear, Fugazi ... no thanks!
Exactly right and earns the coveted PINNED COMMENT AWARD!!!

Fun episode! Totally agree on ELP slipping from public consciousness; they’re going to move to the underrated category at this rate.
Yep!!!!!
Maybe the question should be “Among Prog fans, which bands are overrated?” You’re absolutely right that Prog really isn’t popular enough to be overrated
That’s the right disclaimer!!!
Pink Floyd after animals.
I’d love to see you Andy and Barry do a joint show.
That would be EPIC!!! And throw Pete Pardo in the mix too…
@@TheProgCorner Yeah definitely!
Thanks heavens for closed captions!!!
I think the bigger question would be, do these prog bands have albums that are overrated ?
A much better question!!!
Yes, that avoids the issue of bands that have put out a lot of albums and who have a bunch of “meh” ones that off-set the many classics they also produced.
90125 is Yes's best selling album so it's probably an obviously example but I still like it.

Cool!!!! I can’t wait!!!!!
My thoughts exactly!!!!!! 👍👍👍
It’s hard. Like life!!!!!
If anything, Pink Floyd from 1968-1971 is way UNDERrated!

Hi Scot, I think that it depends on what you like and what you don't, like with me there are some bands that I don't like ,I have tried to get into them but It just doesn't work 😊
Yeah, it happens!!!! It would be weird if you liked everything!!!
Jethro Tull
I've seen a few videos of them on UA-cam: I always hope someone will clamber on stage from the audience, knee him in the balls and say "Try playing flute standing on one leg now, you smug bastard!"
Exactly!!! And yeah, Andy does what he does. Numbers don’t lie. 😵💫😵💫

I like to hear myself talk too but I have learned how to self edit…
Exactly!!!!!
What a fantastic video have a wonderful day Scot ❤❤❤❤❤❤😊😊😊😊😊😊 also tomorrow is my dad birthday ❤😊
Tell your Dad “Happy Birthday from The Prog Corner!!!”
Andy is stirring it up!!!
Andy likes his Fusion. He has an interesting take on Pink Floyd. You might not agree with him but he is always thoughtful.
@@grayjohn6332 I know.
For a TOOL fan and a prog fan in general, this was a great video. Completely agree!
Thank you!!!! Have you seen the new Portnoy video? Trying Danny Carey’s drum parts…
It’s all relative!!!! 👍👍👍
Hi Scot.
After the death of Dickey Betts, I started reading about The Allman Brothers and saw this quote from Betts referring to people calling them a Southern Rock band: "I think it's limiting. I'd rather just be known as a progressive rock band from the South. I'm damned proud of who I am and where I'm from, but I hate the term 'Southern rock.'"
What do you think? I never hear anyone refer to them as prog, but you know, there's something to be said for it. Listen to Eat a Peach. The song Les Brers in A Minor is definitely prog. And how about Mountain Jam? At the least I was say they are crossover prog.
I hear quite a bit of Prog on the Allmans music!!!! Definitely!!!
Oh this is interesting!!! I have to see this right now!!
Hi Scot. Great vid.
Couldn't agree more. Of all the Prog UA-camrs, you are the one I agree with the most. It's very useful for me because when you recommend a band or an album I know I'm gonna like it.

Hey now!!!!
@@jhillst Love Beach. What a nightmare that was.
The Stooges solve everything.
@@TheProgCorner Yeah they do, don't they?
I agree with your take that none of the ten are overrated. I think that, perhaps, the degree to which a person may feel a prog band is underrated correlates with that person's musical knowkedge. After all, simple rhythms and catchy, pleasant melodies are preferred by those who do not want to or cannot put the work in to understand the more complex and dissonant work. Prog can be challenging, after all, and calling a band overrated when it has proven success may just be a cop out. 12:55
👍👍👍
You're exactly right. I don't care for Tool but there's a reason that all the other bands have such great catalogs and reputations.

Random comment Scott but have you heard Mansuns six album British band
Fantastic!!!! Big Paul Draper fan!!!
Music is ALL subjective!!!! But these excursions are fun and spark some interesting debates…
And yet...Pet Sounds...
Thank you!!!!!! 👍👍👍
Great video. Jethro Tull best prog band ever to win a Grammy for best heavy metal album. Mettalica may think they are overrated
Metallica are a bunch of babies. Still crying about that even though they’ve won seven Grammys since…
UK - the most overrated prog band. I bought the first album in the first week of release, was very disappointed in its blandness. Over the years gave it a few listens, but my opinion never changed. These days UK often get a mention in UA-camr top 50 prog bands...I really can't see why.
You think? Both albums?
@@TheProgCorner I hated the first one so much, never heard the second!!
i bought it as soon as it came out too. i loved it then. saw the tour. i love it more now. not a big fan of danger money however.
@vmacart I love them both!!!
Whatever UK's stuff is, it isn't bland. That's a very strange take.
Mirage is definitely my favorite so I kinda get it…
I've suggested before... Before asking that question you've got to define what prog is? To my mind anything that isn't verse chorus, verse chorus, repeat 1st verse, chorus, is progressive, and that covers a lot nowadays.
That covers a lot of ground!!!
Marillion: contains the answers to the questions:
Who can't pronounce his own nickname?
Who can't spell his surname?
Who ate all the pies?
Which Cornish piskie plays the bass?
Who was in a band with someone who was in a band with Sonja Kristina?
Who did a much better job of accepting premature baldness than did Martin Barre?
Which band is really popular with people who don't understand Prog?
I ate ALL the pies.
Blasphemy!!
Keeping it real.
Anyone who thinks Pink Floyd is overrated has got rocks in their heads
👍👍
Lunatics on the grass.
Pink Floyd for sure...
Also Gentle Giant. I remember when I was just starting out in prog I couldn't go anywhere without being asked if I'd listened to them yet, though I only followed through within the past month....HAIL
As for the bigger bands, they're not overrated as a whole (especially given the fact that Prog is still somewhat underground) but there are a few eras in the career of each that get more attention than others. Take, for example, some of the bands in my PROG HEXAGON:
The #1 most overrated Genesis album is Selling England. There, I said it. Unlike Nursery Cryme and Foxtrot, Selling England took me a while to acclimate to.
For Yes, I'd only call the stretch from Fragile to Relayer overrated because of Howe worshippers who have thrown praise to that era like no tomorrow. (Obvs, nothing against the man.)
At least I'm with the crowd with regards to the Moodies and ELP (although I do like SUR LA MER and Love Beach).
I love it!!! 👍👍👍
I personally would say ELP is overrated. For me they had too many weak moments and they are often mentioned in the same category as Yes, Pink Floyd or Genesis.
There you go!!!
You make some excellent points here, Scot!
Brent!!!! 👍👍👍
Exactly.
Wait nvm, just checked, you already made that one!
Yeah but that was a long time ago. I may need to update!!!
I don't like using the term "overrated". But out of the most popular prog bands, the ones I really don't get why prog listeners are so mad about them are: Cardiacs and Tangerine Dream.
For me it’s Magma…
Big Big Train should be HUGE!!!
Caligula’s Horse has never clicked for me…
Not much to add that other commenters have not already brought up I think it was a foregone conclusion that there are no overrated prog bands.
Phil Collins!!! Oh my!!! His drumming in Brand X? A big part of why I always loved Prog era Genesis.
Alan Parsons Project bore me to tears.
I gotta be in the right mood for APP!!!
I Robot is really good, but like Pink Floyd, gotta be in the mood for it.
Prog is great! We have a nice way of closing.
I agree Scot their is no prog. Rock bands overrated. Pink Floyd is one of favourite, but like you said "Dark side of the Moon" could be overrated but not the band.
👍
Absolutely true!!!
I don’t blame you!!!! The only reason for this was to defend my beloved Prog!!!!
It’s complicated!!!!
I think we can focus just on what's overrated among serious prog fans. For me, it would be Caravan.
King Crimson is on the opposite side of the "overrated spectrum"...... I actually cannot think of a time, when those guy’s weren’t doing something interesting and innovative...... and like VERY FEW classic 70’s prog bands, they also brilliantly re-invented themselves during the 80’s(with Adrian Belew)
i for one, have always felt like ELP was/is overrated.
I have heard that before and all opinions are valid. Especially from my subscribers. You guys know what time it is…
Lots of covers and those bloody awful "comedy" songs. Benny the Bouncer wrecks Brain Salad Surgery.
Don’t go near Jeremy Bender!!!! (But I hear you about Benny The Bouncer. Give me Harold The Barrel.)
First one that came to mind. Always does.
@@TheProgCorner i love harold the barrel! underrated ditty.
Better to list underrated prog bands
That’s a LONG list!!!
Bringing the heat!!!
Cheers.
I’m okay with all of that.
I'm probably gonna get hate for this, but i kinda find Neal Morse overrated.
Sure he's got some good songs and albums, but sometimes they get a little repetitive and formulaic and I'm not really a big fan of the Christian themes
Jesus returns next year!
I mean, next year.
No, the next next year.
I get it. Neal has a formula. It bothers me but I know I would be upset if he abandoned it!!!!
Being a Catholic, I cannot get past Morses 200 year old American protestant ideologies.
I like your "my top 10 bands are NOT OVERRATED!!!" slant 🙂
I thought I’d take a different approach…
I don’t like the Adrian Belew era in king Crimson… John Weston yes. Tool is Metal too me. I have 17 Marillion albums, only 2 albums I think they miss the mark and that’s in the Hogarth era. Pendragon I consider Marillion’s equal. Nick Barrett and Clive Nolan of Pendragon put on a show on DVD.
Nice Tangent display
Andy Tillison!!!! Oh, the new album is too good…
I am a huge Tillison fan. Obviously.
👍👍❤️❤️
1973, surely?
It is laziness!!! All genre labels are kinda silly but they help my primitive caveman mind sort things out!!!
@@TheProgCorner This is why you are King! Integrity and Knowledge. No surprise your and my earliest commitment to prog was early Chicago. No one came close to their legendary blending of kick ass rock and sophisticated orchestration of blending genres and virtuosic execution. No one. To this day!
@@TheProgCorner No. Progressive is the right term to describe the criteria I listed.
Definitely!!!! Man, those first seven Chicago albums. Unreal.
Being that overrated doesn't mean bad I'll say Pink Floyd and later Genesis. Maybe Rush also to some extent. As for Yes I think I don't think they are overrated.
Sounds about right!!!
More prog for us then. ;)
@@mikereiss4216 It’s their loss!!!!
Every Prog band I can think of I got into because of the stuff I never heard of before. That’s what made me a fan. That would include Dream Theater, Genesis, Rush, Pink Floyd, all favorites of mine not by what I heard but what I discovered when diving deep into each band.
Agree with all these.
Who is the most overrated Prog reviewer?
(When I first encountered you I was really annoyed by your habit of having the pause after "number 17" rather than before but I don't mind it now)
👍👍I’m an acquired taste!!!👍👍
So glad you came around.
Most overrated Prog guy on UA-cam?
I nominate myself!!!!!
The ego.
❤️
@@TheProgCornerDisagree.😎
I don't have any answer scott i loved the bands of prog
Yes!!!
Question 1: are there underrated Prog bands? Sure! (Insert in the blank space the name of your second favorite band)
IMHO a band that's overrated (starting with the band members having too high an opinion of themselves) is Muse. I'm not even sure if they're that good... They just leave me cold...
Muse is an interesting case. I like their early stuff though…
For sure!!!
Yes, the algorithm let me here 😂
God bless the sacred algorithm!!!! I’m so glad you found me!!!! Prog on.
When you’re talking about prog you can’t really talk about the general music community because there are too little popular bands.
Exactly right.
And you turned me onto some of those!!!!
@@TheProgCorner You mean he didn't invent them?
Shocking!!!
@@martinspencer1618 You don't know these bands?
@@bertkarlsson1421 I've heard of Samla Mammas Manna, Comus and Bo Hansson, but not of any of the others.
I've listened to the Bo Hansson album but wasn't impressed.
If a mathematician had your enthusiasm, I could listen to him discuss the Pythagorean theorem. One quibble: I never got Marillion. Jester's Tear, Fugazi ... no thanks!
Marillion is an outlier. It’s quite possible Andy Edwards was right…
