The Op. 44 is my favorite of Chopin's polonaises, and over the years I've heard many different interpretations. I have to say in my opinion this performance ranks very close to the top of the best. Also, I've always considered myself a Steinway man but this Yamaha has an amazing voice!
Many pianists played this polonaise, but I agree this is absolutely outstanding performance!! Even 18th Chopin competition, just finished, I couldn't find any players that surpassed this performance! 17th Chopin competition would be one of the most memorable competition...lots of talented pianists...just in my opinion.
Yeah, I think the most talented participant last year was Hayato Sumino (Bruce Liu was good but in my opinion not winner worthy). However in the 17th Chopin Competition there were many talented people, and the winner of it was exceptionally talented.
Agreed. Honestly I was a bit disappointed when listening to the 18th Chopin competition. I was expecting someone (especially the winner) to be able to surpass my favourite interpretations. But that didn't happen. Just compare Bruce Liu's ballade no.2 and Seong Jin Cho's and you will see the difference. Cho's could surpass Zimerman's yet Bruce Liu's couldn't IMO. I actually like the top 3 competitors' performances very much for the 17th, yet I don't even like Bruce Liu for the 18th. Maybe I just set my expectations too high. 17th was definitely fantastic.
Agreed. I am expecting to enjoy Seong-Jin Cho's Handel, Brahms and Schumann this October. I also look forward to Charles Richard-Hamelin's performance in Taipei. He is really good.
Honestly, this guy's performances of Polonaise-Fantasise (no 7) and Polonaise F# minor (no 5) are superb. They easily stand comparison with Richter, Pollini, Rubinstein. He treads the right line everywhere, sound, rubato, fullness of volume, pedal/no pedal. Fantastic performances indeed in spirit; deeply felt, fluent, constantly shifting moods, technically flawless. The quality of sound production is second to none. And these are live, not studio. Magical.
Remarquable. Dobra robota, panie Hamelin.
The only pianist l could listen to all day long! I tell you he's got it! The imagination, the killer instinct, the maturity, the individuality. Made me listen to him immediately
Brilliant interpretation!!! Perfect clarity despite the speed and bass! And the piano is absolutely perfect for this piece. Very crisp and clear and not too warm in its character. Definitely my favorite performance of this piece!
Charles-Richard Hamelin is a pianist who studied in the town of Joliette, in Québec, Canada. We are very proud of his performance all over the world… ❤
Respect, Monsieur. Wielkie dzięki dla Instytutu Chopina.
l agree. The perfomanse is veri good! But Vladimir Sofronitski plays simply divine!!! The rekording is old without video, but from the first chords carries away.Good luck!
Beautifully played, and very easy to listen to without losing interest. Each note has it's own place and contributes mightily to the whole. Really clear piano, gorgeous.
Absolutely Outstanding performance! Highly commendable and so rich in every aspect imaginable! Great interpretation of this Op.44 Polonaise in F#! Simply magnificent...
Bravo, Charles, une grande interprétation de cette magnifique polonaise. Tu as atteint un sommet dans l'art pianistique. Une sincère interprétation digne des plus grands.
Wow! Absolutely WOW! Definitely one of my favorite Chopin Polonaises. So passionate, he is just in the Music the whole way through! Mmmmm goodness! ♥️🎼🎹🎵🎶
I first fell in love with this piece when I was ignorant of theory. Chopin had mastered making technical masterpieces that also appealed to the common mans heart.
Did you notice he used his left hand to play the C# of A-major theme at 00:40 ? It's been 2 days that I've been blocking on this passage that requires a huge hand and I finally understood how to do it
Talking about a piece being a proverbial “wall of sound” this is it! ‘Ole Frédéric Francois Chopin just did NOT play. Then He afforded you the scenic respite of gorgeous glistening lakes and singing larks and such. And everything in between? He knew exactly what he wanted and achieved it. So very uniquely genius. PWG
i always wonder if chopin were to take part in this competition how would judges critique his performance and, if chopin were a a judge here, how would he judge him charles and other in this competition.
Liszt would definitely win. Chopin loved to see Liszt play his work and wrote in a letter to a friend how he wished he had Liszt's hands even though Chopin was probably more carefully and delicately emotive in his playing, Liszt's sheer skill (probably the most skilled pianist of all time) perhaps dwarfed Chopin's abilities
People at that time thought that Liszt played things best the first time he sight-read them. After that he improvised a lot! He could transcribe an orchestral score to the piano on the fly, while making critical comments to the author, Wagner, who swore Liszt's spontaneous transcription was better than the orchestral version!
I'm only 14 years old (been playing since I was 6) and so far I can play things as difficult as Debussy's Reverie, and Chopin's Raindrop Prelude. One day, I want to be able to play this piece in a church when I'm all alone.
I also started playing the piano when I was 6 and had similar but slightly faster progress when I was 14. Now I am 17 and am learning this one. It isn't as hard as the others that I have been playing (4 ballades). So you definitely can do it! I think you will be able to pick up this one at 17 or 18 given your progress.
i’m 14 and playing this now. I believe you can learn it as long as you build up to difficult pieces like this. sight reading definitely helps or gradually learning more and more difficult pieces. don’t give up because i really wanted to quit piano 2 years ago and it just started to click with me and now i’m in love with piano. also, be patient with your progress!! piano takes a lot of time and this piece took me awhile to learn because i would always put it off. i recommend learning the main theme/section before you learn the easier part (a little before the mazurka). i hope this helps!
Middle section octave apart or two fast notes are hardest to play clean. Thats Thea achilles heel of this, Chopin,s best polonaise. Awesome playing. Trills are tough too. Though szcherzo one might be even tougher.
Wonderful pianism at work here, and much sensitivity in the mazurka section, but frankly, while I'm full of admiration for Hamelin's ability to play with such assurance, I think this -- and most other things Ive heard him play --is justtoo damned FAST. his playing REPOSE.The piece is somber and STATELY. Any Polonaise must have about it an aura of aristocratic elegance and poise. He doesn't "rush" at all -- he plays with near-perfect control --, bu I feel anxious at the BREATHLESS, FRENETIC quality of it all. One of may cases that prove the adage "Just because you CAN doesn't mean you SHOULD."
J'ai assisté à ton concert MOZART ce soir, 9 février 2017, au Palais Montcalm de Québec. Tu as inspiré les Violons du Roy et tu nous as gâtés de façon supériorissime. You are a God gifted Young man. Take care of those ten fingers of yours! May God bless you .
Much better than Fedorova, whom I happened to listen to in this piece a couple of days ago. His tone is better, as is his ability to keep the line flowing
The fortissimo at 10:10 totally woke that guy up on the left side of the screen
lol so true
lol no-one but only you cared the audience during his play
lol i didn't notice that
exactly
Luke Holmes lol

And.what about the Horowitz interpretation?(referring to that CBS LP "H on Television")
Yes, in general, yamahas are not the best for classical music, but chopin institute's yamaha is one of the best.
i think Yamaha just sounds great in his hands
Who’s do you consider to be the best performance of this piece?

I think this polonaise has the most untapped potential. So difficult to balance power, tempo, finesse, and phrasing in this one.
Honestly, this guy's performances of Polonaise-Fantasise (no 7) and Polonaise F# minor (no 5) are superb. They easily stand comparison with Richter, Pollini, Rubinstein.

Completely agree
Agree😊💕
I think it's the best Polonaise op.44 in this Chopin Competition(until now)
Krzysztof Ksiazek also good.
To me, Ksiazek was better. His interpretation was more majestic the way the character of the polonaise is
Blechacz all the way
17 year old Ivo Pogorelich is also quite stunning.
I'd prefer pogorelich
Way to make us Canadians proud Charles, amazing job!!
This is by far my favourite interpretation of this piece, there is so depth in his playing
Absolutely in love with this performance! That's exactly how I've always wanted to hear it :)
Remarquable. Je crois que Chopin, lui-même, n'aurait pas cru que l'on puisse parvenir à une telle densité.

Absolutely beautiful! This is by far the most emotional performance of the tragic polonaise I have ever heard.

I first fell in love with this piece when I was ignorant of theory. Chopin had mastered making technical masterpieces that also appealed to the common mans heart.
Thank you for performing two of my favourite pieces in all of classical music: this polonaise and Chopin concerto #2
So many play this with too much power and a harsh tone. This was certainly special. A true talent and wonderful musician. Bravo.
Yes that was exactly the issue when Fedorova played the piece
Extremely beautiful !
Superlative in every aspect !
Bravo !
what a beautiful interpretation !!
Polonaise in F# minor, Ballade No.2 in F major and Ballade No.4 in F minor.
Something about that F key hits different.
So far I'm a fan of his performances
beautiful performance
His transitions are flawless. Outstanding.

So beautiful, sensitive, sorrowful. My favorite interpretation of this polonaise. 👏🏻🎹✨
for me, this interpretation comes 2nd after Kultyshev's. This is a great version too.
The best interpretation of this polonaise that I ever listen
Thank you for an amazing rendition!
A+ fantastic playing on a fine instrument. I loved every note!!

Great interpretation and greatest pianist!
He has some truly exquisite moments and evokes quite a marvelous sound (even from the Yamaha!).

It's all there, masculine aggression combined with feminine sensitivity.
This is the miracle of fantastic music written by such composers as Chopin and overall Brahms!!

Green with envy. As a 4th year (very interrupted) player from 1989-91 and 2022, this piece is becoming doable.
