- One night stay at the famous Burgh Island Hotel (as featured in Agatha Christie's Evil Under The Sun) for my birthday.
WARNING: contains disturbing scenes of a middle aged man in a hot tub, not wearing any tweed.

Hi Tweedy! This was Fabulous! I wish you had shown the inside of the Beach Bungalow! As a devoted Agatha Christie fan, I would loved to have seen the environs inside the bungalow as well as out... Although the weather was not sunny and warm, I found the mood to be so atmospheric! 'Sunny & Warm' is the setting for 'Evil Under the Sun' and 'Stormy & Foreboding' the setting for 'And Then There Were None'! Either way, Burgh Island will conjure up the right mood for an Agatha Christie Mystery! Lastly, please do not apologize for having a good time on your Birthday! Although your self-deprecating jabs were taken in good humor, please don't apologize for your body or for having some 'liquid festivity' on your Birthday! You deserve it! Cheers! 'Happy Birthday'! Thank you! I get the sense nobody wants to see the bare flesh of a (usually tweed wearing) middle aged man in this day and age. Maybe "obscene" is the wrong word - perhaps "grotesque" or "repugnant" would be better?

...also I really appreciate hearing that you like the eclectic content! I would love to do more "conventional" outdoorsy stuff - wild camping etc - but with work/family commitments it's often really hard to find the time... And yet I really like making these stupid videos, so it's hard to resist the urge to churn another one out whenever I have the chance.

Happy St. Patrick's Day Alan! Yes I had really hoped to showcase how beautiful the Pilchard Inn was but it was made difficult by the fact the nicer half of the pub is now apparently only for people who are eating there (I'm not really happy about that but that's another story). We were originally going to have dinner at the hotel, but actually made a last minute change of plan and ate at the pub instead... However by that point (and after waiting for the other people in the pub to leave so I could do some filming without bothering anyone) I was a bit the worse for wear and I don't feel I really did it justice...

That is amazing! I never heard of Burgh Island and thank you for showing me these areas of Britain. The Pilchard Inn is probably the best named pub I’ve seen!! Happy Birthday to you also!!! There is an island on the Thames somewhere, I can’t remember the name of it but I think the inventor Trevor Bayliss lived there once and the Rolling Stones played there in the early days - I saw a documentary on about it years ago. Perhaps some fellow gastronauts may enlighten me on the name of that small

I didn’t want to ‘google it’ and I was wracking my brains (which proved to be minuscule, again) trying to think of it so I said I’d throw it out there and ‘ask the audience’ so to speak. Eel Pie Island 🏝️ great name and possibly a future one night camp and cook out?!!!! 😜
We went across a good few years ago now, only to find the main hotel was "closed" as a large wedding was taking place and no "extras" were allowed in. The Pilchard was thus bursting at the seams. So a complete contrast to your visit! Anyway, Many Happy Returns! 🙂

Thanks Joesmntt! Yes it is a very special place. I'm not sure the hotel is particularly great value for money, the prices can be eye watering, and as you've seen in the video being in England there are of course no guarantees about the weather!
I would definitely recommend to anyone to at least visit the pub though, if you're lucky enough to catch that at the right moment - on a nice day but off season when it's quiet - then it's absolutely magical. I had been to Burgh Island as a child I think, but the first time I revisited as an adult my wife and I sat in that little alcove window in the pub and watched a murmuration of starlings swooping across the bay at sunset. Really incredible.

Happy birthday John. I surfed Bantham River mouth many many years ago (before the crowds !!!). The most consistent break on the whole of the English south coast I reckon. A beautiful place to spend a birthday. Cheers :)

Yes I did indeed have a great time thanks! (Although if I'm honest dinner was a bit of a disappointment - but maybe I'm just a fussy eater.) It really is a spectacular pub window I promise, you just don't really get the effect when it's dark. I once watched a murmuration of starlings (?) over the beach at sunset from there - magical!

Thanks Dave! Yes I am definitely a whisky fan too, mostly Islay malts like Laphroaig, plus also some Japanese whisky like Chichibu. As an odd aside I started the Wikipedia article on Japanese whisky, I was a fan when I lived there in 2005 and back then it wasn't really taken very seriously by the rest of the world...

Thanks Cara! Yes it is a really special spot. I wish we'd had a bit more time there actually, it would have been nice to take a proper walk all around the island and properly explore all the nooks and crannies of the coastline. Alas the draw of the pub (and the hot tub!) were too strong!

I've been out on another adventure today and to be honest completely forgot it was Mother's Day (my own mother never believed in it, so it's not a tradition I grew up with, but now I'm a parent myself obviously I'm expected to join in observing it)... Hahaha glad you picked up on that Tim! To be honest in normal conversation I would usually just say "a hotel" like most other people do nowadays. Although perhaps it depends with whom I am talking. I'm a terrible turncoat really.
