Marlin is a beautiful car. I remember how thrilled I was when I saw it at the AMC new car pre-show in 1964. It was an employee only event. In subsequent years I was very excited about the AMX/Javelin!
What a sweet looking automobile…I bet the owner is very proud of this amazing and original specimen! Thank you Mr. Lou for making and uploading this video. :)
Fully agreed. I wish they could have held on a little longer with Jeep and Eagle successfully predicting the car market of today (awd and suv’s all over the place). The Chevrolet 327 is no comparison to the AMC 327, that little Engine was well Balanced and Engineered, absolutely Beautiful. Thank you both for sharing!
At least we've finally progressed beyond the ol "AMC bought the 327 from Chevy. They never really made any motors themselves. They shouldn't have had "Motors" in their name."
@@KC9UDX that is a really ridiculous statement. First off, it is an ENGINE, not a motor. Get a grip on vocabulary. AMC used Nash engines until their own V8 ENGINES were designed. AMC stopped using Packard V8s in the 1956 model year. The 1st design were 287 and 327 cubic inches. The 2nd design was introduced in the 1966 model year and was much more efficient and lighter weight. That design was the 290 and 343 cubic inches. In 1968 the 390 came out. In 1970 the displacements were increased to 304 and 360, the 401 was introduced in 1971. Look it up. You really need to stop repeating garbage that morons make up!
Lou, you missed getting the shot with the taillights ON with this one. You’re the only UA-cam automobile documentary series I’ve watched who often makes it a point to get a shot of the rear with the taillights on which I’ve always really appreciated. This Marlin by AMC is one CHOICE CHERRY that this nice couple was blessed to pick. What a cool classic ride!😎 Thanks for sharing it with us Lou!
My father had a friend that worked as an engineer for American Motors. He drove new Ramblers that were a perk of his job. I remember a Marlin just like this one.

Wonderful!! This is what's missing at car shows!! All of the regular drivers that we all grew up in like Marlins & Ramblers, Matadors & Pacers, Catalinas, Furys, Estate Wagons & Coronets, yada yada. They're the real story of our lives
Hi kickinvideo333, Happy to read you enjoy this episode :-) Good news! There are quite a few of the cars you mentioned featured on this UA-cam Channel, so I hope you'll spend some time and enjoy some of the cars we both enjoy, Lou
Lou Costabile Glad to explore your channel! I almost couldn't believe my eyes when I saw this Marlin! And the color is gorgeous! I want my next Strat in the same color!!
AMC cars from the 1960s were amazingly comfortable! I had a 1966 Rambler American 220 wagon (cheapest AMC wagon that year - my very first car purchased for $300.) and it rode like you were on a cloud. I have never since owned a car that rode so smoothly.
What an exceptional example from an era long ago. AMC hung in there for quite sometime but sadly got outdistanced by the BIG 3. Love that they drive it and obviously is very proud of their car showing it and educating our younger disposable society kids. Very cool ...

Joe and Peggy have hooked quite a beautiful big fish with this one, especially finding one in mauve! The Marlin wasn't particularly popular in its time, but then AMC never did shy away from creating cars that were different. Remember, this was the same company that gave us the AMX, the Gremlin, and the Pacer! Of course, you've always had a knack for finding and spotlighting so many special cars like this. Looking forward to more!
There were a couple of these in my neighborhood in Astoria Queens when I was a kid in the 60's. I was enthralled by them. And there was a Mercury Marauder that someone owned across the street from my apartment at the time as well. 45, 50 years ago. So long ago......✌🏻😊
AMC deserved so much more respect than they got back then. Had GM introduced this car, it would have sold in numbers much closer to the Mustang. Because it was different and it was from the little car company, this car was seen as "odd" instead of "in."
What a beautiful car I never thought the vinyl top would go to the trunk and around the side . America once made nice time capsules . A forgotten art for sure
Hi Walter Weddle, Happy to read you enjoy the color and character of this car :-) Hope you see many more cars on this UA-cam Channel you'll enjoy, and you're welcome, Lou
Thanks,Lou for this video on the 1966 American Motors Marlin. Rambler AMC had the original design on fast back and bucket seats interiors. Then Plymouth copied the design on the Barracuda. Congratulations to the owners of this original AMC classic car.
Hi Lou! I got a Hemmings 1966 Dodge Charger email and it reminded me of the 1966 Marlin, which brought me here! My bro had a 1966 Ambassador, and I remember him tilting the front bench seat back into a bed!
Hi Mr. BLACKHAWK, Happy to read how you arrived at this video. Interesting you mention and Ambassador with a fold down front bench seat.....stay tuned :-) Lou

Beautiful Marlin! Love the color and the 327. Very very rare car! Grew up in Mileaukee so we saw alot of AMC prducts, also a friend I grew up with his father worked at and retired from American Motors. Since I am 72, I know the cars very well.

When American Motors hit their stride (FINALLY!), they hit really hard. The '67 Marlin was even more impressive from a design standpoint: It incorporated the very cool Ambassador grill. I've only ever seen one in real life (other than in the dealer's showroom when they first came out). They must cost a small---or large---fortune, IF one could even find one in good condition so many decades later. This car looks pretty modern, even by today's standards, tho its look is very different from cars in 2020. Thanks for the posting!

Actually the 327 was placed in production in 1956 for the 1957 Nash Ambassador, Hudson Hornet and Rambler Rebel. The first post-merger V8 produced by AMC was the 250 CID which was used in 1956 Ambassador Special, Hornet Special and Rambler V8 models. For 1955 all Nash/Hudson V8s were purchased from Packard (S-P Corp.)
God bless the restorers and Stewarts off car and many other items from the past. I especially important that the obscure cars/thing get taken care of as they are part of our history and they have many stories to tell!!!
I would have been fifteen years old in 1965. I lived in Milwaukee, still do, and remember there was a Marlin that parked up the street from my parents house. I could not believe seeing this car, I knew AMC hit one out of the park on this one, well at least I thought so. My dad bought a 66 Pontiac Tempest the next year. It was a magic period for cars back then. I remember walking a few blocks to the Plymouth dealer to see the Fury Turbine powered car. That color on that Marlin... wow. The Ambassador in 1967 I think, had this violet thing going on with the 343 CID V-8, The Ambassador was a great car too. It really is sad to have watched what happened to AMC. They should NEVER have got into bed with Renault, neither should have Nissan in 2000

Cool AMC ride, like the special signature. The AMC World Head Quarters building still stands in Southfield, Michigan / Now a bank. • Cheers from The Detroit & Mackinac Railway 🚂
I owned a 1974 AMC Matador coupe Oleg Casini with the 360 v8. Very stylish and most beautiful interior of any car ever built. I wish I could find another.
Another gorgeous AMC, i didn't knew about this AMC beauty!! I have googled this car and found one pic of its interior and i was in AWE!! Its interior was in Mariner Turquoise with the combination of shiny metal gauges, dash designs and so!! Very beautiful car indeed! Also came across a build of it where they bagged it and put bigger deep dish rims ..(think it was torq thrust custom design)..e
His comment "60's Charger look". reminder..the Marlin came out in 65, a year before the Charger....so, more accurately, it should be the Charger, had a Marlin look. Who copied who?
Phil Preston actually, the fastback design was used first by Chrysler on the Valiant based Barracuda in 64 (A car you should try to feature Lou. Very under appreciated). Also the fastback design was nothing new by the time the 60's rolled through. It was a very popular design cue during the Art Deco era, and many prewar cars. Nash and Packard come to mind. Also my personal fav of the 50's: the Maserati A6.
I don't know who copied who but we should remember that a LOT of these cars were concept cars, sometimes for years before they actually used the style. It was a GREAT time to be a gear head !!

My parents bought a new Rambler, [AMC] 1962 station wagon. It was two tone white top and blue bottom with a luggage rack on the roof. For some reason my dad opted for the OHV straight six, but it was more than sufficient to haul all of us five kids from Seattle to Disneyland in Anaheim California regularly. It was extremely well built. I don't know if it featured uni-body construction. We had to wait a while to get the car for some unknown reason. The seating arrangement could handle seven passengers. My brother and I always sat in the back seat facing rearward. Today I think that could be extremely dangerous in a rear end collision!
The engine in this car was introduced in 1956 albeit in a 250 CID form. It was offered in the Nash Ambassador Special and the Hudson Hornet Special each of which was actually built on the 114.25 inch wheelbase of the Statesman and Wasp models. In 1957 the 327 CID version was standard in the Rambler Rebel (limited production) as well as the Nash Ambassador and Hudson Hornet (both in their last year of production). I had a '65 Classic convertible with this 327 four barrel and found the engine to be smooth, quiet and powerful.
Hi Ed Arcuri, Thank you for viewing and sharing your knowledge. Happy to read this car brings back memories of your 1965 Classic Convertible :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing, Lou
I saw a 66 or 67 Charger the other day at an air show. I can't remember the year because that was two weeks ago, but I remembered the type, because this style us sooo legendary. It will/ has gone down in history
Lou,You out did yourself with this Marlin! I thought the 812 GTS V-12 Ferrari was the bomb. But to find a great Marlin in this color. Is that color truly Factory? Where do you find these Wonderful cars. You have the best job in the world. The more video's I watch of yours. The more I can't believe these cars still exist. What are the odds! A true fan. Shawn.
Nice example of a rare Rambler that I remember well. I worked for AMC back in the late 60s and early 70s. I remember working on these like yesterday. Did the owner state the car had ever been repainted? The reason I ask is it is obvious by looking at the VIN plate on the drivers door that it has been repainted at some point or at least the door has. Thanks for sharing this great Rambler.
Hi ncautoman57, Glad you were able to see one that brings back memories. I have no idea on the paint question. Regarding "thanks for sharing this great Rambler", you're welcome. Hope you see many more AMC's on the Channel you'll enjoy, Lou
What a beautiful car. She is soooooooo beautiful. I love the curves in her rearend, this lady has the true junk in the truck. Those eyelash mirrors are so exquisite. Just beautiful and very well taken care of. Great job. The only problem I have is that I watched the entire thing and never saw her move. ☹. Maybe next time...
Hi Carolyn, High praise for the looks of this car :-) Yes, I would have liked to "get this one in motion" however time (and my lack of editing skills at that time) did not allow this one to be in motion. You're right, most of my videos from 2019 on will share some "motion" for you, Lou
4:42 the seat belt trim piece is the column-shift-automatic delete plate; if this car had the column-shift auto, the indicator quadrant would probably have been where that cover is. Saw the same type cover in a manual-shift '55 Packard.

Even the Charger had to change the gigantic fastback look to sell. And then it was a big hit. The public will let you know what is an acceptable design for sure.
Always loved these cars. The fastback was somewhat exaggerated in its size. The overall cosmetic styling however, was very well executed by implementing the large area of its rear section with the vinyl top extending down to the lid opening of the trunk. A slight hint of a fin configuration, as well as the thin horizontal pieces that ran along the tail lights made for a very beautiful design. Great find Lou!! Keep up the good work!!

The AMC Marlins were Awesome cars . The folding flat seats were started by Nash . The reason many parents in the 50's didn't want their daughters dating guys driving a Nash !
Very cool Marlin Lou! I've always thought the Marlin was indeed a unique and unusual automobile. They do have a slight resemblance to the Charger but to me the Marlin is far more special. Well engineered for it's time. Wonderful car! Thanks for doing this video.
before the javelin AMX, i guess this here was the performance car. really neat. never knew these even existed, until i saw this post on my car story with lou costibile.. living in fairly large municipalities like nyc, seattle, san francisco- you'd think i would have come across one over the decades. never had a coffee table book covering rambler/AMC, either.

Every AMC motor is better in every way than similar displacement motors from the competitors.
I'm a ford guy but saying amc 327 was superior to GM's 327 is a joke.

What a cool classic ride!😎
Thanks for sharing it with us Lou!

@@kickinvideo333 Yes that's a great color for a Strat 🎸 They are my favorite electric guitar.
AMC cars from the 1960s were amazingly comfortable! I had a 1966 Rambler American 220 wagon (cheapest AMC wagon that year - my very first car purchased for $300.) and it rode like you were on a cloud. I have never since owned a car that rode so smoothly.
Thank you for viewing and sharing your knowledge.
1966 was a very good year for AMCs - they are timeless....
So nice to see this one in this condition and be able to share it with the Viewers. Thank you for commenting, Lou

What an exceptional example from an era long ago. AMC hung in there for quite sometime but sadly got outdistanced by the BIG 3. Love that they drive it and obviously is very proud of their car showing it and educating our younger disposable society kids. Very cool ...

I agree, well said. Thank you for viewing, Lou
what a beauty! I had a crush on the AMC Marlin when I saw them on the road new!
Happy to read you enjoy the looks of this car :-)
My father saw designs of the times. Kool. Dad. Happy Birthday!!!! He taught how to appreciate design and engineering.
High praise for Dad :-)
Joe and Peggy have hooked quite a beautiful big fish with this one, especially finding one in mauve! The Marlin wasn't particularly popular in its time, but then AMC never did shy away from creating cars that were different. Remember, this was the same company that gave us the AMX, the Gremlin, and the Pacer!
Of course, you've always had a knack for finding and spotlighting so many special cars like this. Looking forward to more!
Hi iswc27, Happy to kand this big fish to share with you :-) Can't wait to show you more, Lou
I've always had a soft spot for the AMCs.A unique color, too. It's like 'Dusty Rose' meets 'Plum Crazy',lol.
Glad to read you enjoy this car :-)
There were a couple of these in my neighborhood in Astoria Queens when I was a kid in the 60's.
I was enthralled by them. And there was a Mercury Marauder that someone owned across the street from my apartment at the time as well. 45, 50 years ago. So long ago......✌🏻😊
Hi George B, Happy to read this car brings back memories :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing, Lou
AMC deserved so much more respect than they got back then. Had GM introduced this car, it would have sold in numbers much closer to the Mustang. Because it was different and it was from the little car company, this car was seen as "odd" instead of "in."
Thank you for viewing, and sharing your thoughts Stewart Snider :-) Lou
I got to see that car in person a few years back. I fell in love with it of course.
HI Drew Beck, A memorable car for sure :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing. Hope you see many more cars on this UA-cam Channel you'll enjoy. Lou
What a beautiful car I never thought the vinyl top would go to the trunk and around the side . America once made nice time capsules . A forgotten art for sure

Beautiful color! Good looking car! You don’t see those too often!
Glad you enjoy the color & looks of this car, and you're right, you see very few.
Thanks,Lou for this video on the 1966 American Motors Marlin. Rambler AMC had the original design on fast back and bucket seats interiors. Then Plymouth copied the design on the Barracuda. Congratulations to the owners of this original AMC classic car.
You're welcome Juan :-) My pleasure sharing with you.

Love it! Thank you for sharing this, Lou! Very cool car! Like the 1966-67 Dodge Charger, love that fastback roof design by Richard Teague.
Hi Dejael, Happy to read "Love it!" :-) You're welcome, Lou

Hi Pizza the Hut, You don't see this "Rare Fish" very often at car shows.

Happy to read you enjoy the looks of this AMC :-)
Most beautiful car ever built.
High praise :-)
His comment "60's Charger look". reminder..the Marlin came out in 65, a year before the Charger....so, more accurately, it should be the Charger, had a Marlin look.
Who copied who?
Hi Phil Preston, That is a good point. Thank you for viewing and sharing, Lou
American Motors lead the way
I don't know who copied who but we should remember that a LOT of these cars were concept cars, sometimes for years before they actually used the style. It was a GREAT time to be a gear head !!
68 Ford Torino had a similar look as well.
I've never seen vinyl on a fasback before. This car is a nice rare piece of history. Hemmings columnist Pat Foster would love this car fer sure!

@@loucostabile Will do, Lou. Thank you for your thoughtful reply!

Hi Shawn, I'm back :-) Thank you for being a Fan. Did you see this big fish? Enjoy, Lou ua-cam.com/video/S0qbN5CBEXo/v-deo.html

4:42 the seat belt trim piece is the column-shift-automatic delete plate; if this car had the column-shift auto, the indicator quadrant would probably have been where that cover is. Saw the same type cover in a manual-shift '55 Packard.

Its, its, beautiful! AMC dropped the ball on this one, simply a gorgeous design in my opinion.
Ogsonofgroo it just didn't sell. Public didn't feel the same way at the time. 🤷🏽♂️
Even the Charger had to change the gigantic fastback look to sell. And then it was a big hit. The public will let you know what is an acceptable design for sure.
Hi Ogsonofgroo
, Happy to read you appreciate this car :-) Thank you for viewing and sharing. Lou
Glad you "love" this one :-) Thank you for the encouraging words.
