On "My Car Story" we're in the West Suburbs of Chicago on 6-19-22.
We're looking at a 1966 AMC Rambler American 440 Convertible in Red Paint with the Factory 290 CI “Typhoon” V8 engine, and a 4 speed manual transmission.
The car's Owner is Don Wiese. Don’s had this car since 1998. Don shares while looking for parts at a swap meet, he came across this car in rough shape. He noticed the V* under the hood, and then noticed the 4 speed manual transmission. Being a former American Motors Corporation Employee, he did some research and found out only 3 Rambler Americans in 1966 had the 290 V* motor, convertible, and came with a 4 speed. After a 2 year restoration, this car looks showroom new.
    ENJOY!

Hi Lou, I have an interesting Rambler convertible. I'm wondering if you have any interest in it. 1965 Classic convertible original owner. My parents bought it new and has been in the garage for 17 years since my dad passed. Looks as if it came out of showroom yesterday. I am in south eastern Idaho. If you have any interest, let me know. Thanks.

The Rambler American was a likeable car, with its clean, simple design. It is a shame that AMC is hardly mentioned anymore, but thanks to Lou and the gentleman who owns (and restored) it, some of their cars won't be forgotten. Thanks Lou!

Lou, this Rambler is astounding. It is so rare on so many levels - not to mention that AMC just didn't make many ragtops - ever... The restoration is so tastefully done right down to the "Pacer" mags. Congratulations to the gentleman on his restoration and stewardship. Gr8 call Lou!!

Some of my earliest memories is my grandparents driving down the road to take me out for the day in their 1965 Yellow American Coupe. I had to be around 5 years old. My Grandfather treated every car he owned as if they were a new Caddy. The story goes My Grandpa always bought used and after he had them running like show room new everyone wanted to buy these cars from him knowing he fixed everything. And he loved changing cars often.

I owned a 59 American--40 years ago--and it looked nothing like the next two generations of American...I thought that the mid-60s versions were rather bland looking....but wow!...a V8 convertible 4sp?....my mind is blown..AMC was such a unique, struggling company, but they hung in there for a long time. I would love to have a cup of coffee with the owner of this car, I am sure he has lots of good stories about his over 30 years with AMC...he is also an American Classic!

Now that's a rare gem! I've never seen a Rambler American with a 4-speed floor shifter. I've seen plenty of Ramblers in that era with the 3-speed on the tree. It's also rare to see a convertible equipped with a V8 engine, because most had the inline 6-cylinder engine. My sister's first car was a 1968 Rambler 6-cylinder automatic. Really cool car Lou!

In 1966 I was with my grandparents when they bought their new 1966 Rambler Classic. The dealer had an new American 2 door hardtop with a 290 V8 . sitting on his lot. While my grandpa was making the deal for his Classic I was checking out the cars on the lot. I was 14 years old and have always liked the American motors cars. Especially The American and Rouge.

I got to ride in a brand new 1966 Rouge 440 in Bamberg, Germany. My dad's buddy bought it through the military sales outlet. They sold a lot of cars to the overseas military. It was yellow with a black interior and I was thrilled to ride in a new American car.the following year in 1967, I got to see that same car again in Ft.Campbell, Kentucky. Just by some coincidence, my Grandmother had a JoHan 1/25th scale model car kit 66 American 440 Rogue waiting for me when we got back to the states. I put it together and I still have it! It's one of my most prized possessions now but I'd trade it for a real one. I also have a 1967 AMC sales brochure printed exclusively for overseas military sales. I doubt if there are many if those left.

In addition to the two Volkswagen Beetles my father owned, for a period of time my father owned a 1966 Rambler American that he called the Nash. His car was one of the more common models with a 6 cylinder engine and a 3 speed column shift with overdrive. The overdrive was used when traveling on freeways. At one point my father did have to do some repair work on the 3 speed shift linkage, because worn linkage made it difficult to shift into gear.

In the late 60s, AMC built the Rambler American "Scrambler"....their idea of a muscle car--and it did very well against the competition!...It had a 390ci, 4sp, rated at 325hp(probably underrated!)...they are very collectable nowadays.

Beautiful car and a very nice restoration. Sounds like the engine has an exhaust manifold leak when Don first pulled up at the beginning and at the end of the video. I hope Don got that fixed. My dad bought two new full-size Rambler Classic wagons both in 1962, then in 1964. Our '64 was the 660 model with the 290 V8, but the '62 was an absolute bare bone entry-level model with a 232 inline six, 3 speed manual column shift and zero options...not even a radio.

@@loucostabile You're welcome, Lou. I clicked the "like" button on your video. That's really a very sharp and very rare American. Hope Don got that exhaust leak fixed, though. I don't mean to be so critical, but that flappity-flap exhaust leak sound is so prominent that it draws immediate negative attention to a viewer and starts to cast doubt to other car afficionados about the quality of the restoration and build. I liken it to guys who post their driving videos here when show-casing their beautifully restored vintage car or truck, and the first thing you see is a misaligned steering wheel that's way off-center while on a straight, flat road. Ugh, that's like fingernails on a chalkboard! To some folks, that's a not a big deal, but to a real car enthusiast, that kind of attention to detail is important, in my humble opinion.

Sounds like the car my uncle bought, I believe it was a 66 2 dr post with 6 cylinder and three speed column shift transmission. Rubber floor mats, no radio, but did have a heated, blackwall tires, with dog dish hub caps. Really good gas mileage from the engine. Good cheap trsnsportation.

    • @carlv8168
      @carlv8168 Рік тому

@@allanfranklin9615 Yeah, the worst part about Dad going to the new '62 bare-bones Rambler is that he traded in our absolutely pristine top-of-the-line '57 Bel Air (with V8, auto, power, etc). So, we went from relative luxury and beautiful world-class styling to basic transportation in a boring sedate car, and it really sucked. That new Rambler had little if any sound deadening, so it was noisy and clunky.

Definitely not your grandma's Rambler.. that little 290 is a high revving engine, you can hear that it's got flat solid tappets, those flat tappets follow the cam more precisely, and do not go soft at high RPM the way Hydraulics do, that little car will fly, I'll bet it's a barrel of fun.
