- Is Portland Oregon Going Down or Improving? This is what we answer in this video. Portland is a city with problems but I do think they can be overcome. Being a real estate agent takes me all over the city. I get to see it day and night and chat with all kinds of people in this city. I share with you my thoughts on what I see going on in Portland and some of the great projects that are in the works for Portland.

I was back there this summer (2023) and was really surprised by how much Portland had improved. I saw very few tents downtown and and in inner Portland overall. We walked in Laurelhurst Park at dusk and there were just people bbq‘ing and playing guitar. I walked all over PSU district and downtown as well as inner SE and I saw people out and about living their life everywhere. I almost couldn’t believe how nice it was after all I‘d heard via media and also friends during the last couple of years.
I just moved out of Portland in September. It hasn't changed. Rampant crime still, crazies out at night. I'm glad I left. It sucks to see theft and destruction of other people's property so common there but, well, it is what it is.
I've lived in portland since 2002, and l REALLY miss the pre-pandemic decades of once crowded sidewalks, crowded max-trains, crowded buses, crowded malls, crowded bars & dance halls, etc in the most beautiful city. The 2020 pandemic literally destroyed portland, but I'm glad we're taking baby steps to rebuild and revive. We've not fully recovered, BUT whenever I'm in downtown portland, things are starting to pick back up. Hopefully things will be back to normalcy in 2 more years or so.
I think it will as well. Some great projects Portland has planned over the next 10years that will help to bring people back to the city.
As someone who lives in downtown Portland, this video is a bit sheltered from the reality. Though I think he does try to represent reality. Downtown has gotten better, but most of the good bars and restaurants have closed, there are still a lot of homeless and drugs.
Also it is incredibly dangerous at night. I tried to see a movie downtown a month ago and I couldn’t even get to my car because it was surrounded by people high on fentanyl.
Also the endless protests and riots are really tiring. Just last Friday a Pro-Palestine group tried to shutdown our annual Christmas Tree lighting. They chanted for an hour overtop of the carolers.

Also about 3 weeks ago 4 business in SW waterfront had their windows bashed out.

@@movingtoportlandoregon yea i get it, your showing how portland is moving in a great direction.. most of my friends and family there have left and say it is definitely not the same and it went downhill quick.

I'm still considering moving back to Portland within the next couple of years (I lived there in the 90s) and your videos have been very useful and I'll definitely reach out when I get closer to considering a move.

I live in Eugene and go up to Portland every few months and i always think it looks better every time i go up there. Its not like everything is perfect but i see improvements up there i wish we could see stuff like that in my town.

I go to Portland often. It's a wonderful place, and I always have a fantastic time.
It's like any city, there's bad and good spots.. you just know where to go.

I really wanna move to Portland. Good home prices there. One thing that worries me is its safety. Looting, Homelessness, Rioting, Cannabis Legalizing, etc.
Come visit if you haven't been. I don't see those things being issues in a lot of Portland. Some areas yes like homelessness and higher crime.

I am a native Portlander of 66 years. The decay has been accelerating since 2016. The city has been overwhelmed by extreme leftists, anarchists, vagrant drug addicts, violent cartel drug gangs, criminals, and assorted malcontents of every social and political bend. It is a miserable place. And anyone with a sane mind can see it will continue to decay. The public school system is a complete and total failure. I would never move my family here. Much less retire here. 2025 I will be moving to a place that honors law and order and doesn't glorify degeneracy. Portlands decline is irreversible.

Wow. Are you talking about Portland or Gotham City? What part of Portland do you live in now? I hope you find a city that makes you happy and content.
I felt the same way, moved out in September of this year. I don't think I'll ever go back to Portland except to visit family who live in the area. But that will be very infrequent.

It's too bad your camera can't convey the smells of Portland. I was there two years ago and besides the drugged out homeless bums, the smell of urine and feces was overwhelming.
Sorry you had such a bad experience. It was definitely a different downtown 2 years ago when camping was allowed everywhere. Vastly different now. I'm not sure where you were staying but that hasn't been my experience. I've had condo listings in the roughest part for homeless as well, you just need to know which areas are more affected.
You should re-visit now. It has really improved a lot.
It’s block by block and it’s improving, which means the difference is decisive for certain blocks. The “open air fentanyl market” at 5th and Washington used to be completely unacceptable to walk past. Now, boarded up, patrolled, and with the nearby food carts opened, it’s just a part of the foot path many office works take to get lunch. There are some junkies but the balance has shifted. The city also has many elements to create positive atmosphere, like paying jazz buskers and hanging lights from trees year round. A few blocks away to the SW, downtown barely has any visibly “dysfunctional” people. I was in the area from the Whiskey Library to Pioneer Place around Thanksgiving with my very touchy elderly parents and they had a great time. A choir was sound checking in the square - was actually magical.
People should know that the Pearl and the West Hills have the money to pay private security and staff to talk to campers. Regular neighborhoods have that same civic energy but can’t just make the tents go away if residents are unlucky enough to have some appear.

For what it’s worth, I work in a bad part of downtown and the city’s efforts have paid off in the last year. For example, it now feels fine to take my small kids to a Pioneer Place evening movie.
It’s no different than downtown in a big city. I love Portland more than the sf Bay Area.

I live just inside Portland city limits. It's disgustingly terrible here now. We are overrun with homeless and violent drug addicted criminals. This guy is full of it.

I think it really depends on the job and the person. Like G said, some people are more productive. A healthy city depends on people using the city spaces and services daily or it leaves a void like we’ve seen.
Some people do not like cities; especially what they call "Liberal Cities". It's definitely political.
