First time real offroad with my Unimog! Lets test the build and see how it performs, I tried a mud hole and got stuck. So a Nissian patrol with a winch helped me to get through the thick mud! :D It was alot of fun on a good terrain to play on :)

Unimog did not fail... the tires did. The mud turned them into racing slicks.
What a beauty!!! I had a chance tou buy a running one for $5,000 UDS and passed the opportunity. Today I still regret that! You can get some synthetic rope for that monster winch.
Yes it's tempting to feel invincible in a Unimog but they're heavy and you aren't! Mine was also a 404 ambulance but 1963 model. And yes embarrassingly I got stuck three times - once in black basalt mud by the Shashi River, once in a sand dune in Mozambique, and the scariest when we were fleeing a rising river at Hippo Pools in the middle of the night and we slid sideways off a narrow embankment. Very fortunately a tree at the side stopped us going completely under.

Your tires are great for roads and mild off roading. You prepared for sand, not mud. And you are heavy in those mudholes...

Met de juiste banden lukt het wel, ik heb vroeger jaren bij een grote Unimog dealership gewerkt en deed daar ook demoritten voor potentiele klanten, en daar was regelmatig ander terrein voor de wielen te vinden. Maar als dit de eerste keer was dan mag je zeker niet wanhopen, het zal steeds beter gaan. Succes.
Als ik ga rondreizen dan ga ik zeker niet zo een moddergat in 😄 Maar het is goed om te kijken wat wel en niet kan. Als deze banden versleten zijn ga ik naar nieuwe opties kijken. Op de weg rijden de Nato banden goed.
Oja ik heb er nu lier touw op liggen 😄
Watching people stand beside those winch cables and straps creates a bit of anxiety. They'll cut you in half if they snap

Voor dit soort werk heb je de verkeerde bandjes. daar heb je de visgraat voor nodig.
It would help with appropriate tires and a driver who understands off road driving.

make sure to change oil in your portals and axles now.. 404 allow water egress thru the seals... must change out portal and axle lubes after trips thru water. A brand new totally refreshed axle... maybbbbbbe not... but other wise... yup. DO IT
The diff breathers has hoses on them and have a pipe next to the diesel breather. I will do a oil check soon. And will do the first motor oil change also soon. It looked deep but it was not deep at all. My whole chassis didnt touch the mud.
@@unimog404... you only have to get the center of the wheel in the water for water to get in there on the old 404's..... hub seals can let water in. Not talking about water in diff breather hose at all... though the hose is supposed to be intentionally plumbed high... they are OLD and may not be in as great shape as you might think. Was around mog life (mine and many other folks mogs) for nearly 15yrs (I to had a dieslized 404 myself) and keep my ears to the ground still.. so am not speaking out my arse... granted you don't know me from Sam and have no clue that I might know a thing or two on the subject. :p
@@coachgeo is it just a problem with old seals (read old, dried up rubber) or is it a problem with the design itself? Hailing from a unimog benzworld lurker and son of a long time 404 owner.
@@Nesten321 old seals combined with old technology. work with your supplier to get seals made of newer technology materials etc. and not use very old NOS that wont be of newer compounds.

hope the winch had synthetic line on it..... otherwise that pull was reallllllly risky. If not synthetic .... make sure you put a jacket or winch line blanket on things next time.

Haha was the only mudhole where nobody went in. they had a part with sand holes and bumps and I didn't do that part. They just made it for a few weeks of offroad weekends. I didn't want to flatten their track 😄 I made sure not to damage the offroad park. And the organiser was happy with me and how I drove and helped others.
Nice Mog camper, but those tires do not look like proper ones for swamp bogging. And that's why you need not just portal axels but also winch and that's what friends are for :-D
No tire can help him in those situation! That's the limit of the Mog and deal with it!
On the other hand Ural, Tatra or Kamaz will feel right at home on this exact terrain.
@@stormtrooper9404 Not sure it's Mog's limit. Smaller Tatra like 806 would probably has the same problem. Bigger ones might not, as they are usually 6x6 or even 8x8 or even bigger (missile carriers and other specials). So those are longer with a lot of grip. But they are much heavier as well. From this size truck like Mog I would bet on Praga V3S as better option. Bit bigger, but still lightweight carrier, and some has even front axel so 6x6 with lockers. Alt. Volvo TGB variations or Pinzgauer. Those are also pretty capable.

Dit vond ik hartstike leuk, joh! Ik heb 'n '59 Willys Utility Wagon (in Utah, USA). Ik vraag me af waar in Nederland jullie 4X4 kunnen? I'm sure if you had more aggressive tires, with bigger lugs, you should have made it through the mud hole on your own. Those Unimog's are pretty fabulous machines! Nog mals bedankt voor de video!
Good video Victor my first Unimog was a 404 with the Petrol engine (original) You say that yours was replaced with a diesel engine? Thant would make the 404 an infinitely better vehicle! Trying to make up for 88 hp with nothing but gearing certainly has its limits, and in the end the bottom line is that YOUR EXTREMELY SLOW, PERIOD! Your diesel should help that a bunch! I sold my 404 a few years ago and found a U1300L with 21,000 K on it and it had just gone through a rebuild from the German Army the truck has the Turbocharged 366 diesel but no winch like yours! Enjoy your 404 they are slow but mighty Victor!
Replace it with the 6 bt from Cummins
Mates got one he has tractor tyres for it and he don't get stuck
nice mog but those tyres are not great. I would be replacing them with something more modern once there worn out.

Hey man, zou jij mij kunnen vertellen waar dit is? Ik heb een jeep wrangler uit 2003 en ik zou hem erg graag is echt willen testen. Alleen laat de randstad dit niet echt toe haha. Ik zoek echt nu al ruim een jaar naar zoiets simpels als modder zonder daarbij iemand lastig te vallen. Het valt niet mee kan ik je zeggen haha.

A bit like watching a linebacker attempting 5.13 level sport climbing...the strength to weight ratio for conditions is just off.
Yes not enough horsepower to throw out the mud from the wheels. But when traveling I'm not planning to go into such mudholes. The rest of the park was super easy to drive. I can probably do 50% in 2WD. But I didn't want to destroy the park 😅

Why, why, why Diesel. Sound is terrible, so untypical.
It is for long distance travel. Much more torque on low RPM. It can accelerate in 5th from 15km/h. It is a different sound and I like it. And the engine is running better and better because of long term highway speeding with 95km/h. Even did 104km/h
And it is just 80hp 172nm torque
@@unimog404 Mine is a real historic one from the starting year 1955 which originally has 85hp. After the head had to be planed it has something beyond 90hp and some 160Nm. But engine is still that of 1955. Full tank allows to go around 500km.
