I had a Vox Continental in 1970, built a special stand so it was higher and easier to play standing up. Used it for for all the current top 40 at the time. Played it through 2 Leslie 145s, also on special stands that put them at ear level. Needless to say I kicked ass.
I had one of each single and double stave of these beasts heavy duty British made, and it took me in the 70' and 80s. One of the best organs that I played. The church sound was unique when I played the Ave Maria. I used a Leslie speaker with them and the sound was suberb like a Hammond organ. Thanks for the video. 🙂
Had one of these late 60s just as the double keyboard came out. Played many years in local groups and had a great time. Took me back to the good old days. Thanks.
I was in an italian rock band in the 70s and sometime we had to do guest appearances and often the other band had one of these. I loved to play the Vox. I thought was the next best thing to a Hammond.. Classic classic instrument and very robust!!
Came here to say that a Vox Continental has been featured in this evening's The Repair Shop on BBC 1. Didn't really do a proper demo so I'm now about to watch your video. 😀
A very superb keyboard 🎹 that defined the 60’s because most groups made it an effort to have one part of their lineup. This keyboard 🎹 is very underrated but it reigned supreme back in its day.
This is really a great demo! Thanks! I use the Kronos, they have a sound set for the VOX, it has all the classic Doors presets, sounds just like the real thing, amazing!
Instead of either the real deal or a software emulator, I have a Roland VR-09. Its duplication of transistor organs like the Continental line is impeccable. I’m always satisfied to play that when I need a (single-manual) approximation of the combo organ models of the 60s. I can easily live with the digital mainframe.
I have a Continental II, dual manuals with bass pedals. According to the estate I bought it from, it was purchased from Regent Sounds in London. Who knows if it had been a studio instrument there or just resold through the current music store. The person who would know died several years ago. I choose to believe it’s on all British Invasion recordings that came from Regent Sounds. Until someone proves me wrong that will be the truth. ha ha! When the pedal assembly is attached and the switch next to the connection is turned on the bass controls only affect the pedals; and the bottom octave in the lower manual just becomes more keys of the lower manual. That’s probably the case with the one in the video also.
The Vox organs were the state of the art in there day as well as the Farfisa compact and dual compact organs. The sound is unmistakable and the 60's would not have been the same without them, that is until blues happened then those that could afford them switch the Hammond B3. I love the sound of the B3.
Vaughn Skow when you say that none of the software packages that are out there today to mimic the Vox organs come close to the original rich sound, you are 100% correct.
I had one of those a few years ago I bought from the original owners brother, with a 901 Leslie ...I sold it to a music teacher from upstate N.Y. after I had it a couple years ..One of the coolest things I ever owned, would have kept it except I wasn't a real keyboard player and didn't have enough room for it..
Hi there Thanks for posting this video. I just picked up a super Connie, the front wing nut receptacles/ female pieces inside have come loose and are rolling around. Is there much to do to get at those front holes inside to re insert them? Any help would be much appreciated Thanks Todd
I was pleased to look at the circuitry of the thing. I kinda always wandering what was/is the component base (tubes, transistors, ICs) of those vintage organs.
What's the best amp for these beauties? I'm only running software plugins and playing with tones....so far tube amps with some extra reverb gets more funk. Thoughts?
The dark ones are actually a dark red color. The left one has the symbol for a sine wave and that's more or less what you get. The right one has an M which supposedly is what a reed sound looks like on an oscilloscope. And yes, one or both have to be pulled out to get tones from the white drawbars, which have the common pipe organ footages on them.
Nice demo of a classic organ. I just bought the VOX sound set for my Kronos, and must say, it sounds identical to this (but better because you can add reverb, chorus, etc). One of the best organs ever made!
IKARUS SOUL You are kidding right? You need a Volume Pedal and a Amplifier. These organs sound great through a Vox Viscount Amp. Have use them through a Fender Bandmaster back in the day also. Through a 145-147 Leslie Instant B3 sound.

I wish I had a time machine and money so I could go back to 1967 and buy a new B3 and 122 Leslie. I was actually expecting this combo organ to sound thin, weedy, wheezy and just generally uninteresting, but after hearing it, it sounds exactly like I thought - thin, weedy, wheezy and just generally uninteresting.
I own 2 Vox Continentals and a Hammond B3 with just 1 Leslie 122. For my Continentals for the Vox sound I get it perfectly out of my Vox Viscount Amp. If I wanted to sound very similar to my B3 Hammond I run it through my 145 Leslie Speaker system. The sound you heard here was out of a regular Amp. I don’t know what he used. Apparently he doesn’t know how to play so he didn’t give anyone any idea what this Super Continental can do. If you ever get a chance and can listen to a Vox Continental through a Leslie Speaker try to do so before trying to knock these Vox Continentals. They were used by many bands during the 1960’s I know I was in a band during my high school years between 1965 and 1969. I couldn’t even find a Vox Continental back during the Summer of 1965 as hard as I tried so I started out with a Farfisa Combo Compact which also had a good sound it just weight a ton for me to get around with from gig to gig. Luckily a couple of band members would give me a hand with it back them. Wasn’t until late 1968 that I located a Brand New Single Keyboard Continental. As I mentioned above I own 2 a single and a double Keyboard Super Continental. The first group I saw back during the Mid to later 60’s using one was “Paul Revere & The Raiders”.

SHOULD I REPLY IN ALL CAPS ... YOU KNOW, BECAUSE OF YOUR HEARING LOSS? ;-)
If your Vox Continental had a pitch glide you could probly use it today.
The Continental doesn’t get the respect it deserves. A revolutionary instrument.

That thing is groovy! Very beautiful instrument. The 2 separate bass drawbars are very cool.

I like it! It's like Elvis Costello's keyboardist uses in "Radio Radio" -- enjoy it, man! :)

Csodálatos Hangszer! ❤️🎶
Hey Vaughn,
You should of played some Mr. Crowley on that thing.
You come up with some neat stuff as always.
Take care Ed
One of the keyboards that Suicide used in their early days! R.I.P. Alan Vega, long live Martin Rev!

Germanium transistors 🤟😎🍻

Do you repair these transistor organs? I have A Farfisa Comb Compact single manual. It needs some electronic TLC. Powers on but no sound.
Very cool. Same great tones Doug Ingle from Iron Butterfly got from his.

Where can i buy one of these styles of organs?
I take it the White Drawbars per set are inactive unless one of the Black ones per set are out?
