I recently had an old friend that I went to high-school with, give me 3 totes of her mother's yarn AND crochet magazines......ALL VINTAGE. I felt like I was opening a time capsule. One book of patterns was dated 1947!
I love vintage yarn! I found my mom's yarn basket several years ago, and it was full of old Red Heart and Paton yarn. There was also a box of mini-granny squares that my mom had made. I have no idea what she'd planned to make with them, but I'm incorporating them into items for myself and my brother and sister, so we'll each have some of her work. ❤
Did u get this box of yarn from my closet because it is yarns from my oldest stash wonder if you could still use them and let us know what u use it for
I have been given a lot of vintage yarn and vintage crochet books! Such a treasure! This person was 90 when she died and she crocheted up to her last few years!
Columbia-Minerva is the yarn I learned to crochet. CM was discontinued sometime in the 1960s. This was so much fun seeing the older labels I started my yarn journey. Orlon acrylic was found by DuPont in the 1940s.
Just an idea: take all the vintage yarn labels and make a collage for a picture/poster for your wall. (Could spell out words with yarn.) Great find for a box of vintage yarn!!🧶 The 6mm is Macrame cord. I have been doing macrame since the 70's. You can use the macrame cord as a filler and crochet over it to crochet a basket.🤗
Those specialty yarns are hard to crochet with. They make awesome projects. But if you make a mistake they are almost impossible to take out. Here is a plus though, it's also impossible to see where you've had to cut and splice. But it's a slow hook and splits when your hooking. Best to use a bigger hook that way you know where to put it in the next row.
Hi Juan loved the unboxing. I’m 77 years old and remember the vintage yarns. That beige cord would make a nice basket. That one yarn without a label looked like a homespun I use to have. You look really good in the soft blue yarn you’re wearing 💕
You got a great deal! I will be 70 next week and I remember my mom knitting with those vintage yarns when I was a kid, so they’re probably from the 50’s and 60’s. I remember seeing Wintuck on the labels. Also that “hairy” yarn looks like Lion Brand Homespun. It was popular about 15 or 20 years ago. Have fun with all your yarn!
Evita is considered a ladder yarn. It's great to combine with a pima cotton to make a fancy scarf, hold both together to crochet. Use a large hook, creates lace look. I used an L hook. Nice vintage yarn haul. 👍
Hi Juan, I'm 56 years old and I can remember many of the older women in my family using these yarns, also please don't apologize for use of only a simple half double crochet pattern for the hat and scarf, the Puzzle yarn speaks volumes for itself.
This is what I was able to find out about the Spool Cotton Company, you can also find their archived patterns if your curious.... The Spool Cotton Co. produced thread and yarn in the late 1800's to the early 1900's. It eventually merged with Coats and Clarks. They published popular crochet and knitting patterns in the 30's to the 50's that were priced at 10 cents. Spinnerin Nylaine Yarns were in business from the 1950's to the end of the 1970's early 80's. They did not only yarn but patterns and then towards the end of the companies life cycle they produced rug hook kits.
It's so enjoyable to see these old threads from my childhood. Red heart came out in 1936 and as the years went by they got better and better with durability, washability, colors and feel. I still have remnants from projects. That cording is for crocheting a motif or rectangle for a floor mat or rug. The skien of yarn that you are calling skien of yarn that looks nice is lion brand homespun it's my favorite for scarves and squishy beanies.
Juan, That Bonnie cord is for macrame. You do crochet that, along with braiding, it's just a rough simplistic craft, more for carpet or plant hangars or art projects. Laura 😊
You could take those vintage yarns and make a shadow box of them. Then you can enjoy them without trying to use them in a project. My great grandmother owned a sewing shop back when my 75 yo momma was a very young girl. I have a lot of her vintage sewing and knitting/crocheting items and I’m going to shadow box them to preserve that little bit of family history. LOVE LOVE LOVE your channel.
OMG you need to put all the really older ones in a shadowbox. Hang them on your wall as an art piece. Red heart would be able to give the age of the yarn. They would look great as a Red Heart yarns throughout the years. Your mom would probably love them.
New here from Bag-o-Day and I too love Premier Puzzle!! Because I am a yarn hoarder, I have many vintage yarns! Most from early 80’s None of the yarns had a number weight then, they went by ply’s. Google the companies. The craft cord can be used for baskets , purses, bags and plant hangers. The furry yarn is good for trim but a pain to make something completely out of it. The unlabeled “crinkly yarn looks like Homespun. I’ve used Homespun to make a shawl. Very Pretty and soft! 24/7 cotton is still available and it is not that old. Can’t wait to watch your other vids!
The green Puffball yarn is something I would glue over a cone and make a puffy Christmas tree! You may have seen the bobble stitch Christmas trees that are so popular this year and that's what gave me the idea. Might be fun to craft with.
I learned to knit using the baby fingering yarn in 1972 making baby sweaters for my son with small thin needles, I think size #2 or#3...took me forever to finish 1 sweater. The cord may have been for macrame. Hi Juan and Wilma from Yvonne Dixon winner of your scarf
What a treasure box of yarn! Took me back to watching my Mama & Grandma crochet with the Red Heart Baby yarn. Yeah, I’ge been here since 1964, & learned to crochet in 1983, so I’ve seen a lot of good, bad, & downright weird yarn! Looking forward to seeing what you create with some of those 😉
Hi Juan, I am loving your Chanel!!! At 19:13 I believe the yarn is Homespun by Lion Brand in the color way Herb. It’s a great yarn!!! One of my favorites!!! Enjoy- Victoria
That was fun. Amazing how everything has changed. Definitely like the ones that had the center pull. Wish all yarns today had center pull, I always seem to get major yarn barf. Lol
Good morning… there are ply charts to convert yarn weight to ply.. Hope this helps..I googled ply chart and they popped up..love your UA-cam channel 😍😍👏👏👏👏👏👏
When my dad's older sister moved into a care home, my cousins gave me a tote full of her yarn. She had a few of the "ancient" labeled skeins. I think it'll go into a museum of sorts! The Bernat Blissful(?) you'd probably use it for edging as an accent ...
Thanks, Juan! This was one of the most interesting yarn reviews I’ve ever watched! (LOVE Puzzle by Premier. Got a couple projects using Puzzle on the hook right now,)
Hey Juan! I have some of those vintage yarns in my collection. I've inherited a good deal of my collection from my aunts and other family members. I say use up those vintage yarns! I love trying to come up with beautiful projects using the odd/mismatched yarns. I love the challenge of taking random yarns and making something amazing!.
EBAY! 🤦🏼♀️ I feel so SILLY! I had not even thought about going to the site to shop yarn! Goodness, I’m such a rookie; I’m grateful to “pros” like yourself! ☺️. What an interesting haul!!! Beautiful hat and scarf! Cheers! ☺️🫶🏻🧶 Lisa in OH
That Very airy hairy brown yarn is lion brand Homespun. Huge rage late 90s, early 2000s. The "Martha Stewart Coming Home Poncho" was made with this. It can be a bear to work with, but so soft in afghan, scarves or poncho.
VINTAGE! I would have been a toddler when some of those came out! I recently received a box of vintage yarn and I love the smells (I’m weird lol) of old yarn. Exciting to see you go through your new Vintage Stash! ♥🎃👻
I think the "hairy" yarn is Lion Brand Homespun. Loops & Threads also has a similar one. It's nice for blankets. Good to crochet with but horrible for knitting.
Hi from Southeast Texas. Heard of you from Crystal at BOD. I am looking for yarn to make a scarf for my hairdresser and that scarf you are wearing has the colors he requested. I would love to know which yarn you used if you don’t mind sharing? Thanks for sharing your cool find with us.
Love the vitage yarn! Word to the wise I would store the vintage yarn separate from your other yarn. Speaking from experience. One time I did not do this and it gave my new yarn quite an oder to the point that I had to thorw it all away.
They are very pretty. Maybe vintage should stay vintage. A little bit of history. Love your channel. Maybe a tutorial on that great hat and scarf. Have a great day. ❤️
Absolutely beautiful Puzzle color way. Makes me want to buy it right now so that I can get a hat and scarf knit up for our expected cold weather next week.
Hello Juan, nice yarn haul for a nice price. i remember some of that yarn. i may have one or two of the baby yarns. sometimes you win, sometimes you don't with used yarn. i got some that smelled like it was in a musty basement (that was local) I put it in a tote for a month with fabric softener sheets and now it smells nice. . i got some real nice yarn. and i also got some that i needed because it was sold out everywhere and ebay was my only source. i hear mercari is also a good place to get used yarn.
The vintage yarns are neat to see. I can remember seeing some of them, mostly red heart at my grandma’s when I was younger. I like to look back at vintage items and see what their value was compared to now. It’s interesting.
Greetings, Awesome yarn haul. I know what some of those mystery yarns are. I will list them below. I always say, you can not make an informed decision without all the necessary information. Thank you for sharing. See you in the next one. Sundance yarn is from Herrschner's. Orlon is acrylic. That "hairy" yarn is Lion Brand Homespun. Bitch to crochet with, awesome to knit with. That gray ball that you think is Hometown, you are 100% correct. Dept 71 is from Herrschner's, Sirdar is also from Herrschner's,
If there isn't a barcode, that should be a clue. I don't know when they started scanning those. 70's? Maybe someone else does? 🤔 The camo colored skein missing the label looks like Homespun. Thx for showing us your vintage lot! 😊👍🧶
I think the yarn with the bobbles and spaces was a kind of ladder yarn that folks used to make necklaces. ….maybe to wear with their studio 54 disco top!

The skein of yarn without a label reminds me of a type of yarn I saw at Walmart. I was hoping to see a yarn called Dazzle aire. I made a bedspread out of it doing hairpin lace in the mid-1980's.
Love that beanie! Definitely looking forward to a tutorial on that❤ love me some eBay for vintage anything as well as some really good deals. It’s also a good place to find discontinued yarn.
Nice vintage yarns! I haven't had any trouble doing center pull on any skein of yarn. They tuck the end of the outside yarn into one end of the skein. The center pull will be the opposite end. Hi Juan! I’m 3 days older than Jesus and I remember a lot of those yarns. 😂 What a nice stroll down memory lane. Thank you for sharing!🥰🧶
😂 Moses over here waving. 🙋
@@stephanienorris364 Hey Moses! Long time; no see! 🤣
You guys are too much 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
I’m going to remember this one!
A year younger then God
This is the best and funniest yarn review. "unbiased review" was comedy gold. 😅

Great idea! Left intact, these older skeins have a strong individuality, but used in a crocheted project, all that ‘antique’ magic disappears.
I love how you make up stories for the yarns😝
I’ve been crocheting since the late 80’s and recognize some of those but some are way older-so cool👍🏻
New here from Bag-o-Day and I too love Premier Puzzle!! Because I am a yarn hoarder, I have many vintage yarns! Most from early 80’s None of the yarns had a number weight then, they went by ply’s. What a fun trip down memory lane, Juan! Have fun with your treasures!

Boy, yeah, now I am obsessed with doing a project with Puzzle Yarn!
I remember buying yarn with that tag at the 10cent store for my afghans when I was in 1st and 2nd grade . I'm 63.
I learned to crochet in 2nd grade too! I’m 77 Tamie in Ohio💕
I crack up at some of the old labels with "virgin acrylic".
I remember my aunt getting some of that yarn.
Juan, I discovered your channel recently, and now I binge watch your videos while I crochet and knit. I might be a Juan addict. 😂
That was fun. Amazing how everything has changed. Definitely like the ones that had the center pull. Wish all yarns today had center pull, I always seem to get major yarn barf. Lol

My mother and sister still have sweaters alive knitted them from the early 80s. The yarn is superb.

Hi Lisa I’m in Ohio where are you? My daughter is an NP at Grant in Columbus!
Homespun Lion Brand. 5-6 some people call it hellspun because it’s a bugger to frog
That Very airy hairy brown yarn is lion brand Homespun. Huge rage late 90s, early 2000s. The "Martha Stewart Coming Home Poncho" was made with this. It can be a bear to work with, but so soft in afghan, scarves or poncho.
There is something about looking and feeling "vintage" yarn. Cant find good things like that here in Newfoundland Canada. Beautiful colors..
Interesting to see the vintage yarns and labels.
VINTAGE! I would have been a toddler when some of those came out! I recently received a box of vintage yarn and I love the smells (I’m weird lol) of old yarn. Exciting to see you go through your new Vintage Stash! ♥🎃👻
Crystal would fight you for the blingy or mohair yarn! LOL!
I think the "hairy" yarn is Lion Brand Homespun. Loops & Threads also has a similar one. It's nice for blankets. Good to crochet with but horrible for knitting.
Nice yarn haul. Great to go back in time 😊

Dang not sure how I missed the very beginning of this vid. Just came back to review and found the yarn you used. Apologies and thanks.

Wow what a treasure box ❤
Greetings, Awesome yarn haul. I know what some of those mystery yarns are. I will list them below. I always say, you can not make an informed decision without all the necessary information. Thank you for sharing. See you in the next one.

Wow you got some oldies for sure 😊
That fuzzy, twisty yarn about the 19:00 mark looks like Lion Brand Homespun yarn.
If there isn't a barcode, that should be a clue. I don't know when they started scanning those. 70's? Maybe someone else does? 🤔 The camo colored skein missing the label looks like Homespun. Thx for showing us your vintage lot! 😊👍🧶
😂😂😂oh this was a good one. Funny, more Ebay!! Oh I remember some of them.
I love vintage yarns! If I use them, I keep the labels in a photo box. 💕
I think the yarn with the bobbles and spaces was a kind of ladder yarn that folks used to make necklaces. ….maybe to wear with their studio 54 disco top!
Great yarn. It was fun to see what you got. Some of them, I never heard of before. I like it when they put color & year on ball band.
Hahaha, I’ve all those RH yarns you showed plus lots of others that’s not being made anymore. I’ve LB Jamie and the original Jiffy.
I keep my vintage yarns in a clear bin away from the bright lights.
Great vintage haul. I love browsing Ebay.
Happy day Juan❤❤
What fun!! I got something like this from an estate sale. Tons of horrible poly blend yarn so I made a dog bed , cat bed and a stuffy for my pit bull. Worked out great and it's durable, washable and colorful! Make a crustmas ornament out of that shiny stuff.
You should put the first few ones and the Italian ones and baby ones in a Shadow Box and display in your yarn rooms some of those are 50 & 60 's cool score Thanks for sharing , nice video
Fun unboxing, the brown "hairy" yarn is Homespun.
I too have gotten vintage yarn from goodwill and thrift stores. I usually use it to make items I donate
Juan. Bet you could take picture of labels, send to company, they would be able to tell you year or yarn. 😊
First time watching your channel. It's been close to 20 years since I bought anything from eBay! Lately, I've been checking out the yarns from local thrift stores.
Hi Juan. Catchup viewing. I'm sure I recognise some of those yarns from recent videos. Quite a few of them went into the misfit box😂
Learned to crochet on Wintuk in the 70s. I have Spinnerin books from the 40s.
The skein of yarn without a label reminds me of a type of yarn I saw at Walmart. I was hoping to see a yarn called Dazzle aire. I made a bedspread out of it doing hairpin lace in the mid-1980's.
Hi Juan, I really like your hat and scarf. A fan.
Love the jigsaw colorway
Love that beanie! Definitely looking forward to a tutorial on that❤ love me some eBay for vintage anything as well as some really good deals. It’s also a good place to find discontinued yarn.
What an awesome ebay haul. I just made a sweater with the red heart fingerling baby. The vintage kind. It turned out amazing.
Fun haul!
Nice vintage yarns! I haven't had any trouble doing center pull on any skein of yarn. They tuck the end of the outside yarn into one end of the skein. The center pull will be the opposite end. You may have to dig around to find it, and there may be some barf at the beginning, but you'll still be able to center pull.
Columbia Minerva could be found in the 60’s. But the label kind of looks late 50’s.
I found this interesting, I was laughing with you at times. Enoyed it❣️
Everything i found on the Spool company and Chadwicks yarn dates it to the late 1930s to near.early 1950s. Nearly 75 to 80 years . Amazig
