Hi Shau Very good analysis. I enjoy what you give me as a South African. Setiti from NZ, what a player. This name Setiti is synonymous to a South African common name. It's a Tswana name in South Africa Keep the Passion
@julian love the video. It's a great time to be a Springbok supporter. Not sure if the assertion that we as fans only want the World Cup is true though. We REALLY want more in between WC's and if you keep an eye on local social media you can definitely sense that fans are ecstatic about winning the WC, but want us to perform in between as well. I do think we would've been able to do it earlier (after 2019) if COVID didn't come along, but Rasnaber had a do-or-die scenario after losing out on a full year of test rugby and also having to contest in a Lions Tour. There was no time left for building squad depth and by the time the Lions tour ended we only had 18-20 or so months to prepare for France. I expect us to still drop a game here and there over the next three years but, as you rightly point out, if they can keep upping the intensity and lifting their own expectations higher and higher, the win % should be much higher in this cycle. The Rugby Championship was great this year though. Not just for the Boks, but very much so for the Argentinians who, despite ending 3rd on the log, managed to beat every other contender. Given a bit more time they will be way better off. I get a sense that the balance of rugby power might start shifting back to the Souterhn Hemisphere, especially as Austrailia start finding their groove again (they were better each week, apart from the collapse in Argentina during that second half). NZ will obviously always be dangerous, it's just who they are. Top 3 team, always. Last but not least, I hope Rassie is working on a succession plan for himself. He's surrounding himself with all the right people, but let's be honest, his health isn't fantastic and he won't be coach forever. It would be horrible to achieve success over the next few seasons just to drop to mediocre again after Rassie departs.
1st Time here. Springbok fan. So far in 2024, Springboks used 49 players. Erasmus very aware of the players age profile. Brown and Flannery bring in new ideas/variations. for a 100 yrs plus SA has been NZ's bggest rival and Kirwan and Mad dog Matt were so bored watchiing us play our style of rugby, did they really think as the greatest rivals over such a long history the bokke didn't have the ability to change? anyone can learn new skills and you don't maintain a rivallry that long by not being good at what you do. Well John and Mattm you got what you wanted. Enjoy Bok rugby as we've always been able to play it, we just always left the razzle/dazzle to the AB's. Good podcast mate, always love AB's rugby and appreciate anyone who recognizes just how good the boks have become. long may the rivallry continue.
As a Bok supporter, I'm concerned about all these accolades. I've been watching the Boks for decades. They do their best when they are the underdogs. Please do not blow more industrial-strength smoke up the collective Springbok skirt. The All Blacks ( our nemesis and most respected opposition- SA practically came to a standstill when the great Jonah Lomu passed away) know about this mental weakness in Springbok culture and they have been doing exactly that for the past month . Great this, wonderful that. F that. Trust me they know exactly what they are doing. Those AB's , very sneaky and smart are never to be underestimated. The Springboks are up again in about six weeks time in Europe. I want them to kick ass left and right. Do me a favor... tell them they really suck and can do so much better. That is the kind of thing that any pure-blood South African can take up as a challenge. We were the original well-balanced people...a chip on each shoulder. Then you'll see them at their best. Bok rugby is better than I've seen it in decades, with a bench as deep as the eye can see.. just don't tell them that! Geez! This country is coming together like never before. Our government sucks but at least our rugby is top-shelf. Let's keep it that way.
I think Rassie is turning a corner on that. With this open play and depth, players have to justify their position in the team every single match so players are playing knock out rugby every week. That creates the underdog perspective at a player level even if at a team level we are becoming if not already the favourites.
We're getting that favourites monkey off our back. We were favourites to win the TRC. Favourites to beat Aus. Favourites to beat NZ. Favourites to beat Argentina in Nelspruit. Only game we slipped up on was away game in Argentina. We were also favourites win the last world cup which we did. I don't think this applies to the Boks anymore. We've handled the favourites tag pretty well in the last 12 months.
@@JayzVeez true. 12 months is not a long time. It's easy to slip back into old habits. As supporters we have some catching up to do. Remember how Mannie was written off last week? Yet, we need to utilise our players talents and not focus on their flaws. We need a run till the next World Cup. After that we have a better shot at continuity when the current players and coaches are long gone.
Thank you for sharing your thoughts. At the risk of sounding arrogant, I believe the Boks are still making a few mistakes. I believe Rassie will continue to experiment with team selections for EOYT. We may even slip once or twice but not only is he discovering talent he’s giving players like Libbok a chance to hone their skills while keeping opposition coaches guessing. Fun while it lasts, it won’t last forever.
Yes, I think the same Springboks still making some mistakes and not firing on all cylinders. I think it is a big transition from playing traditional Springbok Rugby and players now aiming to copy an All Blacks type play so it will take time. Definite excitement in seeing Springboks playing Tonyball rugby. I have never before seen so much depth in all positions in South African Rugby with an excellent coaching staff. True the fun will not last forever. Rugby is cyclic however South Africa has such a good School Rugby system bringing through top youngsters. Springboks went through their very bad cycle before Rassie took over, and it was a disaster as a Springbok supporter watching all the losses. The way I see it is that the present Springbok cycle is still building up to a new peaking level which we have not seen before.
This is what makes this even more promising because we've yet to see a truly sublime Bok performance. Mbombela came close but wasn't a classic. We're still making mistakes and handling errors. Finishing still needs to be worked on. Arendse's would be try is a good example. If we can ramp up our finishing the Boks are going to be tough to beat. The danger now is keeping the motivation going for the next 3 years.
hell yeah! That's great to hear! I am planning on leaning more into the All Blacks and Springboks content going forward. I'm a Kiwi so I have literally not missed an NZ game in 30 years... but I always follow Bokke closely so I am glad this video is being well received. Sometimes a bit of objectivity can be helpful for analysis too.

What did you think of argies way of dealing with the dominant scrum by essentialy throwing it in under the 8th man's feet which for some reason was never called out by SA to the ref. At one point the scrum half threw it so hard it poped out the back before he could even get to the back of the scrum.
I think the Springboks are just getting started , that's the scary part, we've seen patches and misse here and there, but we are slowly seeing it click together. Lineouts on last Saturday were much better and the team despite a few errors seem to be finding its footing let's see.
Line out definitely looking more tidy after a few uncharacteristic mid-air strips against the ABs. Attack already pretty fierce but if it really clicks they will go to a whole new level.
As a South African I find it quite weird that many fellow South African supporters are quite willing to throw a talented player under the bus after a week or two of average performances, in Libbok's case, inconsistent kicking. Thank goodness we have a sensible coach in Rassie Erasmus, who stuck to Libbok. People forget how instrumental he was in the Boks winning the 2023 world cup. And he redeemed and proved himself as the best and most attacking flyhalf the Boks have.
I think his creativity was on full display this weekend, and he helped the Bokke play with shocking width and speed. Yes, the goal kicking is a work on but with other able goal kickers in the team I don't think it needs to be a big issue. Certainly not a reason for non-selection.
Believe me the Boks always wanted to win previous Tri nations and rugby championships as well but we just never got it right. We always value winning but the World Cup just remains the point you are working to and building a squad towards.
Boks got a few more meters to climb, they are playing great, but still left at least 20 points on the field. Boks and Rassie knows, to be the best and become the best team ever, currently the best team, but still got a few thing to iron out tp named the beast team ever, im a bokke supporter, but cannot dish all blacks between 2011 and 2015, but will say the bokke during that time were thw only team to beat the all blacks on occasions, and if we lost it was damn close, lol but yeah as a boj fan happy to forget the losses for a couple of years after that, including record losses. Big ones too. Rassie has brought the fire back. All blacks v springboks will always be my favourite match ups.
I think it's almost a good thing that the Bokke have room for improvement because they are proving dominant despite having some things to clean up in their attacking play. It will keep them sharp as they look to keep bedding in the wider attacking play.
Weldone and now we are all looking forward to Autumn Tests. Yes SA can still improve. Fassi played well in 1st half but in 2nd made 5 handling errors. Then cross-kick for Arendse into in-goal area to strong. De Allende dropped a bad pass and early in game forward pass. One good pass can sometimes win a game, one bad one lose a game ! Louw did not pass with Marx open next to him late in the game - terrible !
I think its not so much putting 'all eggs in RWC basket', as much as being below std for other comps previously. We've mostly had reasonable playing resources but the entire rugby landscape had to be overhauled (administration, leadership, fat cats, political will, coaching, transformation objectives, resource & succession planning etc). Complex problems after decades of apartheid & isolation never resolved. All of which began with a careful clear-out & reset when Rassie came in 2018 & could only be a long term project with layers of rebuild over years ... The main success is less the RWC wins & more the transformed support from entire nation - which kickstarted change & growth in right direction. The 'complete performance' is after building layers over years, and Tony Brown's input. Yet his involvement wouldn't have worked 3 years ago. So now the goals finally include consistency & embracing all comps. Not there yet but building.
"Complex problems after decades of apartheid & isolation never resolved." you could add what followed with years of corrumption, political interference, a brand that lost its value, mismanagement of players, lack of funds and infrastructures and so on. Our cricket and football are still in shambles so there's still lots of work to be done.
While Erasmus is in charge, the Boks will just improve further. The reason is that they are taking and "marking" young players at our excellent school level rugby, so good players are coming through all the time.
Yes, the development pipeline seems sturdy in SA. I think teams only fall off the mountain top when they stagnate and try to 'maintain.' Erasmus seems to want to keep evolving, so I can see this dominance continuing.
In S. A. I think the rugby team of Brakpan with 15 players can also win the Pumas with 13 and 14 players. To win like the springboks against a team with less than 15 players does not prove really anything. The red card and yellow card rules must be changed. Replace the player for wrong doing and penalize him on his salary and bonusses. But in international rugby people want to see force against force. Then lastly, if the boks is really that good, let them win the All Blacks three times in a row. Then you they will be truly a world champion team. But not like this. If I must fight Mike Tyson and he is only allowed to use one hand, my chance to win him will be very , very good. But the question is : the people after paying a pricey ticket, will they be happy to watch a fight like that? No!! So I am not impressed with this game . Some other will, but not me....and I am a South African. This is my oppinion.
How much of the depth discussion is just perception? Surely NZ, England, and Ireland have as much depth of rugby talent as Soùth Africa? Perhaps you mean depth of talent, all very good, providing 4 or 5 players in each position? I dont know these countries enough to know what they lack.
@kellyrobbins8255 According to various sources SA seems to have 400,000-500,0000 players, with Francee having around 100,000 fewer. England a bit fewer.
Hi there, I have to disagree in part with your analysis, it was a fact that South Africa would come back and win the game that was obvious, but and it's a Big but, not by that amount. If you watch the game carefully you will spot different moments when the Argentine team is wrongly penalized or there are others in which the referee skips blowing the whistle against the home team, pretty obvious I should say, so in the end yes, South Africa deserved to win but not by such a huge margin if the referee and the TMO had done their jobs properly. O'Keiff has done it in the past and has been criticized by Antoine Dupont and Eddie Jones. A team with the prestige of South Africa, which is also the World Champion does not need this kind of help, it can win by itself!
Interesting! I guess I just love the game of rugby when it's played really well, so even though I'm obsessed with the All Blacks it isn't hard to appreciate the play of SA in this era. I was similarly impressed with the English team of 02-03, and the French side at times this past decade. Wallabies of the late 90s made me physically ill but I also had to give them my respect haha.
aghhh, it's only Scotland, Wales and England on the end of year tour right? Ireland and SA totes need a decider after the drawn series earlier this year.
Just shows out WRugbys pathetic points system. One loss by a point last week we loose top spot. Beating them hete we got Shit for it. WRugby is a farse cause they despise us winning 2 w cups, beating the Lions drawing with Ireland winnind Rugby Championship. They can piss right off.
chill dudie chill, the ranking points system applies the same rules to everyone & is mostly for fun. Slow down with the 'despise us winning RWC' conspiracy - leave it for backwards illiterates.
Ireland have only lost 3 games in the last 20, same as the Boks and Ireland managed a win here in SA too as well as winning the 6 Nations back to back. The rankings are pretty accurate at the moment with not much between SA and Ireland. Also Ireland have a couple of tough games in November and one slip up there will also cost them top spot too.
The next peak needs to be total dominance. Springboks need to set themselves of being the number one team and aiming for an incredibly low losing ratio.

But the question is : the people after paying a pricey ticket, will they be happy to watch a fight like that? No!! So I am not impressed with this game . Some other will, but not me....and I am a South African. This is my oppinion.
I think the boks have beaten them 4 times in a row
Did you just wake up from a coma, Oom? The Boks have beaten the ABs 4 times in a row. Your rant is outdated
Well to be honest they didn't go for the kicks because they didn't really have a kicker.
They had one, low on confidence and he won the game for em in the first half 😂

How much of the depth discussion is just perception? Surely NZ, England, and Ireland have as much depth of rugby talent as Soùth Africa? Perhaps you mean depth of talent, all very good, providing 4 or 5 players in each position? I dont know these countries enough to know what they lack.
Player base in SA is absolutely enormous. And rugby is still growing...
In that case the Argentinian side should've had plenty more scrum cards. I thought he was very good. He tried his utmost to keep it 15 on 15
You sound like a spring boks die-hard supporter
Interesting! I guess I just love the game of rugby when it's played really well, so even though I'm obsessed with the All Blacks it isn't hard to appreciate the play of SA in this era. I was similarly impressed with the English team of 02-03, and the French side at times this past decade. Wallabies of the late 90s made me physically ill but I also had to give them my respect haha.
SA wants ireland
aghhh, it's only Scotland, Wales and England on the end of year tour right? Ireland and SA totes need a decider after the drawn series earlier this year.
We didn’t care about the rugby championship because we always lost it to NZ :D
There's a lot to be said for winning breeding passion. I think this season will definitely reignite that Rugby Championship spark for South Africans!
Countries on the rise - England, Italy, Argentine and Scotland.
Italy😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
Just shows out WRugbys pathetic points system. One loss by a point last week we loose top spot. Beating them hete we got Shit for it. WRugby is a farse cause they despise us winning 2 w cups, beating the Lions drawing with Ireland winnind Rugby Championship. They can piss right off.
chill dudie chill, the ranking points system applies the same rules to everyone & is mostly for fun. Slow down with the 'despise us winning RWC' conspiracy - leave it for backwards illiterates.
@@BrettStealth i know but i hate WR and their useless officials
Ireland have only lost 3 games in the last 20, same as the Boks and Ireland managed a win here in SA too as well as winning the 6 Nations back to back. The rankings are pretty accurate at the moment with not much between SA and Ireland. Also Ireland have a couple of tough games in November and one slip up there will also cost them top spot too.
The next peak needs to be total dominance. Springboks need to set themselves of being the number one team and aiming for an incredibly low losing ratio.
you'd be taken so much more serious if you'd lose the ringlight.
Thanks Julian. Great analysis.
