- Richard Hammond reviews the 1999 Honda S2000 to see if it can compete with other two seater roadsters in the market, such as the Porsche Boxster or BMW Z1. He tests the cars performance and handling on the road as well as marking it on it's looks and practicality.

the car is 15 year old and it still looks modern
It really has aged well, Its the interior and materials used that are showing its age though!

Just goes to show that subtle styling holds up over time. The most outrageous styles fall out of favour really quickly.

I am an American middle aged man, and I have owed an s2000 since 2007 in New Formula Red. I agree 100% with Ricardo Ellison's comment that the s2000 is a "girls car". In fact, I can't even keep track of how many girls have said they love the car and want to go for a ride. I am more than happy to oblige.

Even more confusing, Hammond did not know Clarkson until 2004, when he first joined of the Top Gear Team.

@o z Hammond, Clarkson and May was the presenters of the old Top Gear. And all of them should be host of the new Top Gear, but James was busy and can join to them only in 2 season.
They were know each other before the Top Gear 2002.

The NSX looks just as good as any Ferrari.

2016- now the old boxter, z3 looks ancient while the s2000 doosn't look so outdated because of the simple elegant design. i think now with the taste of today i think the s2000 looks better than most of it's old cometitors

Dumy Jobby it doesn't hurt that the S2000 doesn't have a replacement unlike the other two.
Car like Z4, Miata, Boxster, TT, and MR2 are great cars. But the S2000 beats them all.

Even 16 years later there aren't many cars with N/A engines putting out 118bhp per liter. In fact I can only think of two makes, Ferrari and Porsche, to ever better it. The styling was also well ahead of its time. The strength is in it's simplicity, which is why its still crisp and elegant looking even next to new cars. I'm thinking it could be a future classic.

All true but why purposely handicap the car with such a small engine? Nobody made them put such a small engine in the cars they exported. Who wants to rev their engine to NINE grand to wring performance out of it? And torque (which is what makes car FEEL powerful) is woeful. If it was designed for some race series where the limit was 2.0 liters, I could understand the choice of such a small engine but they could have squeezed a 3.5 liter narrow-angle V8 in this car and really had something special. And nine model years without any significant improvements?...What a blown opportunity, IMO...

Also, honda isn't known for their V8s, outside of very expensive racing engines. They're most known for smaller high-strung inline-4s. Why would you ever expect anything else?

he thinks the interior is a joke? it's the best part of the car, a track car is supposed to be to the point, no useless shit and they did an amazing job. The seats and gauges are great
I dunno man. I jumped in one and I found the interior a bit underwhelming. Especially as a guy who, if I had one, would not take it to the track. Otherwise, excellent car.
SupramanTRD I understand that many people use their s2000 as a track car for track day. But he wasn't trying to review this car for a *TRACK DAY BRO* and that is why he said that it wasn't a good track car, he was reviewing it from the point of view of an average suburban dwelling man. He even said that is is a good car. Just because you got burned fan-boy self got burned.

+peter wyatt middleton. The 355 is actually appreciating nicely and is one of the more collectible ferraris, it's the last of the dual airbox lower tech cars. Some people just don't want to do engine out jobs every 3 years or deal with plebs spitting on their cars and insulting them.
+Thesaltyseafish Asking price doesn't necessarily translate to selling price. The NSX is a neo classic, sure, but Ferraris will always retain both value and demand. It's not about performance numbers, it's about pedigree.

Why would people pay ridiculous amounts of money for an Acura NSX when they can get a Japanese import NSX for less (especially now when the exchange rate is far in the favor of those buying with dollars)?

i had an '01 S2000 for 16 years 'til it became a money pit. had to move on. i saw this video and had to indulge. if i could, i would buy another. this car saved my life literally 20 times. the things this amazing machine got me through, well.... it's the best car ever built. for the money?...... blows away anything over 80,000. the fun, memories, did i say fun? nothing like it ever built. thx Honda.

I'm pretty sure they came as standard. Also the AP2 had traction control but was optional.

Very desirable car in San Diego. Watched em on craigslist for a while when I was car shopping. They tend to sell above Blue book out here, and they sell fast. Add a nice set of rims and they look great, at least to my eye.
Really looking forward to upgrading to this car after a few years. Just bought my long awaited mx5 NA. Going to enjoy that a little bit first since the s2000 was significally more expensive

They're making a 2016 S2000, awd, electric front motors, mid engine. Everything that made the s2000 special probably won't be in this car and it sounds like it's going the way of complicated drivetrains and technology. It'll probably be much more expensive due to the hybrid design and added carbon fiber parts. I'm hoping it's not ruined, but to me it may already be.
They ruined the new nsx, it's only natural they'll have the same influence on the new s2000...

1995-2005 was the golden decade of small roadsters. unfortunately that trend faded away after that many manufacturers stopped making them or at least stopped "caring" for them like small updates outdated engines and minor facelifs and they rarely if ever advertised

I miss my S2000. I got around to a replacement a 2009 Boxster S. Both beautiful cars.
Doesn't show the engine or trunk once, and still does a beautiful review. Really is about using words to place the viewer there!
This is a fun car to drive. The BMW z3 and z4 are nothing compare to this honda

As for me it is one of the best looking roadsters ( better looking than any MX-5 till day dor sure). Eaven in 2017 it looks modern and just nice.

This car like about 5 years old. Yet it's 17 years old! Lovely car. Design was waaay ahead of its time
What a timeless classic
18 years later and the S2000 still looks top notch. Timeless design, truly. And oh, it's engine is still kicking ass while the 1999 Boxer or Z1 have died long ago.
The car was way ahead of its time when it first came out. I wish there was a new one.
this car was and still is YUUGE!
I had an MX 5 and shortly after bought an S2000. Both capable. The S2000 was absolutely sublime but twitchy in the wet. Forgiven though! Currently have Honda number 14. Age has steadied me up. The 4x4 is accomplished and full of tricks. The Beat is the toy.

Few cars still look modern almost 2 decades after they were launched. R34 skyline, S2000, MG TF to name a few, all still look very modern.

I'm lusting the _Honda S2000_ (99 - 2009) is New Millennium perfection smooth roadster, showed its true time of the beginning of the 21st Century biggest celebrated car by Honda in this century. Ahead of its time! Damn that car came out of a time machine. It already had a modern interior, new racing seat, engine start button, modern speed gauge and don't forget it had high spec headlamps but until S2000 2004 rear and the front headlamp of NSX (2002-06) had xenons LED's before. Elise, Z3, Boxster, MX5, TVR was no rival to this. Not to sure remember the in-car electronics though did have a on-board sat nav in 2002 models onwards. It has as ageless body due to its composition and it goes back to the days of NSX in 1990s when Honda was designing technologically clean efficient fuelled cars for that entire decade. Honda engines beautifully machined for pleasure. The car was initially a futuristic project important year for the modal in 1995 and appeared at the Tokyo Motor Show 1995 and fully completed production model released 4 years later with a newer styling.
It's hard to find an unmolested S2000 in Australia these days, but what an engine!

Hammind deffo went down in my estimations when he even mentioned a BMW Z3 let alone said it looked better than an S2k.
I wouldn't consider the NSX a supercar. I would put it in a "near supercar" classification. Joining the GT-R, 911's, Rx-7 twin turbo & the Toyota Supra twin turbo among others.
Detailed Obscurity it actually is a supercar though, those others are definitely not
