  • Today I take a trip to Greenport skatepark in Long Island which is home of the islands’ only vert ramp. This vert ramp is 12ft tall and has about 2 1/2 ft of vert. I’ve always wanted to get into vert skating so I was psyched to make a bit of progress. Next time I skate this thing I’m going to have to attempt some bs airs.

Mike Pottle I’m not a vert skater but I do love to have a try here and there, in the uk there are about 10 vert ramps in total 😂 so it’s not really something I could get into as it’s hard to access, getting comfortable with the speed and pump was so weird at first I just honestly can’t comprehend how he managed 2 proper lip tricks on his first sesh, hope to see another vid like this from him he could learn loads

    • @Zenguitarring

@@euankirby5158 some ppl just got the sauce. I remember my first time ever at a skatepark long, longgg ago (right before the the skatepark boom around the millennium) at SCRAP near chicago. It had the only vert ramp in the state/region. I had never even seen a qtr pipe in real life. There was a kid a cpl yrs older than me, maybe 11 or 12. He was a total prodigy. Street, ramps, didn’t matter.
The older bmx guys were wanting him to try the vert ramp. He padded up, was shaking, etc. after he drops in, the 1st try he went into an axle stall and rides right back to the other side. Without hesitation, he rips off all the pads and immediately drops back in and starts doing rock to fakies, 50-50s, and even f/s airs near the top of the transition. He never once fell on that vert ramp.
It was absolutely one of the most inspiring things I’ve seen ever seen in my life to this day and remember it so clearly.
the best part was it made me feel like such a wiener because I was scared to drop in on the 4 ft qtr. after I saw that, I went in the corner and dropped in a 4 ft’r. I was so sure that I was just going to smash my face in. Of course that didn’t happen. It was simple as pie and by the end of the session I had dropped in on the 6 ft mini ramp. If I hadn’t seen that kid go thru the process of self command and conquer, who knows how long it would’ve been until I actually tried.
Goddamn I’m old 😔. Moral of the story is even though only a select few are born with next level skills, everybody has to overcome pain whether it be mental or physical at certain points of their life. You will be a stronger and more successful person in the long run.

USE YOUR PADS! Knee slides save your feet and joints. When you get your pads just do a couple of test slide outs each sides and you'll save so much impact on your body.

I think most people respect vert skaters tbh, as far as skateboarding goes it's certainly among the scariest shit you can do. The scene is just so much smaller than street, unsurprisingly considering both the limited availability and the fact that it so fucking scary it's just really hard to get in to. But smaller transition and street has pretty much merged together over the past few years I feel like with parks becoming more and more available.

I grew up out there. I remember I learned to Ollie a garbage can the first time in my life .
Thank you SIMON & your brother for pushing me . This was prolly 91 so the boards were just barely rideable for that. It was hard but with enough speed you guys taught me to go super fast and snap hard and I did it ! Couldn’t believe I did but yea. Just when your mind is telling you what you can and can’t do if you have the belief you can push through and do amazing things.
Simon, if you see this dude, if you’re in Colorado or there in Greenport hit me up dude hope you guys are still around .
None of this existed then I wish it did. So glad the kids get to ride stuff like this. Now the progression must be outrageous.

That’s awesome for a first session, straight into smiths too! Most people go for 5050’s or something a little simpler. Definitely try and get used to knee slides because running out starts to batter your feet and knee joints.
I’ve been riding vert for about a month now (riding transition for a long while) and it feels like learning to skate transition all over again because the gravity and weight distribution on the vert wall is way different.I’m totally hooked though and doing it at least a couple of times a week.

Kind of good to see a vid of people skating vert without making it look insanely easy.
Most vids on UA-cam are of people just flying out the top flipping around and landing like it's nothing.
When they bail they just glide off on their knee pads like they haven't just fallen 12 feet.
Makes you deluded and you think "Hey, I could do that!"
Vert is terrifying. If you disrespect it it will smash you up. haha

Holy shit Chad that pumped me up so much!! I can't wait to get back on a vert ramp, things are still mostly closed here in south florida. After seeing your other video of you getting the rock fakie in the school pool I knew you were going to rip this right away!

Killed it mate!! I love 52's on vert, but those flatspots are a speed killer.. try some 53 or 54 spitties and you wont want to leave... (oh yeah, kneeslide man, steping on the board during a bail is memorable for all the wrong reasons).. cant wait to see you next vert vid!!

If you want to keep doing vert, try some 187 pads. way thicker for when you land on your knees. Also when pumping on vert you gotta time your pump to be way closer to the lip. you gotta wait closer to the apex. It's not like pumping on a 6 foot.

I will be 45 in the next few days and I'm still trying to progress in skateboarding ... my skills are basic maybe, but the vertical is really sketch to me.. the drop is the only thing that I can do on vert and i'm trying to 50-50 on it, but even that scares me.
