roughly how long should you leave it in the refrigerator?
until the buttercream is solid to the touch. Certain buttercreams take longer to harden than others. I would say a minimum of 15 minutes before checking. Also, they solidify faster in the freezer :)

I’ve seen where they do this and then pick up a design they’ve piped over parchment paper, do you have any tips for this? I’m trying to make cupcakes for my husbands birthday, and can’t pipe a decent cupcake to save my life 😩
Sure, you can pipe a design on parchment, freeze it & then transfer it on to your cupcake.
