"One Step Ahead" is the latest offering from producer extraordinaire, Victor Axelrod. Initially voiced over a midi demo at Axelrodʼs Donʼt Trip Studio, “One Step Ahead” is one of the last recordings made during Sugar Minottʼs exceptionally influential career. The backing track, courtesy of The Inversions, was cut at Diamond Mine studio during the same session as the rocksteady update of Bob & Geneʼs “I Can Be Cool”. With Axelrod at the helm the team transforms the cult classic ballad, originally recorded by Aretha Franklin, into an ethereal piece of rocksteady magic. In addition to writing a wealth of original material, Sugar Minott had a deep appreciation and a passion for not only Jamaican ska, rocksteady, and reggae (which he helped develop) but also American soul and pop music. He brought enduring versions of Michael Jacksonʼs “Good Thing Going,” The Persuaders “Love Gonna Pack Up” and Dionne Warwick's “A House Is Not A Home” to the reggae idiom. “One Step Ahead” fits perfectly in this tradition, effortlessly bridging the gap between American pop and Jamaican soul.
Used to hear this through the walls while Victor was working on it… can’t believe he marinated on it for so long, but the wait was well worth it. It’s perfect. Nobody is touching Ticklah’s reggae/rocksteady/ska production in 2023… nobody.
This sounds like STUDIO 1 (Coxsone) I wonder how this was produced
This is AMAZING
BBBBBaaaaadddddd ! 🔥🔥🔥🔥
Ticklah on top once again. A lovely gift from the grave from Sugar.
Lincoln "Sugar" Minott was a true warrior, and never gave up giving back to the downtrodden in his community, even after gaining global fame. Youth Man Productions which he founded gave countless young artists their start. In my opinion Sugar is long overdue his proper respect. Ask anyone in JA and they'll say the same. A gentle man and wise too... Daptone should try to put out his track "Slice of the Cake" a very astute observation on inequality. Its more relevant today than when it was written 40 years. Wicked work guys. You always deliver!
Well said 🥀

As a Jamaican, I love this Daptone! It's beautiful!
Jamaicans lost it when it comes to good reggae, pure old pan a knock. This is the TSOJ it's called ROCKSTEADY . Started from 1966. Now Jamaicans in general cannot tell the difference between early reggae and ska or rocksteady. This is super Killer Rocksteady.
