Bro, you will cry when you will watch this movie. I literally cried watching this movie. In this movie, the girl is desperate to leave India and settle in USA and she often asks her lover to somehow leave the country as she is tired of pollution, dusts, dirtiness, extreme heat, corruption, religious violence and incredibly high population density, and she was a great fan of Britney Spears and was greatly influenced by the soft power of USA and she was intensely occupied by American dream. Her lover named Anwar was an unsuccessful poor person who didn't do anything in his life and was simply doing non-sense research on ancient Hindu temples and he simply graduated in Hindi literature which is a non-professional degree. Then, the friend of Anwar named Udit comes into picture who was pursuing Computer Engineering and he also had a plan to somehow leave India and settle in USA.
The rest you can see on your own in this movie. I literally cried watching this movie because in the end no body survives, the girl named Mehru, Anwar and Udit all die . This movie also reflects the harsh reality of this world.
My inner heart was paining as I watched this movie and this movie also inspired me to become successful and rich, or else you may also have to loos the love of your life whome you love intensely.

It's a mixed language with many words from Farsi (language of Iran). Mohabbat is from Farsi. Other words that mean love, from Sanskrit, would be Prem, Pyaar, Preet.
One small correction: har dil sawaali doesn't mean every heart filled with question but it means every heart seeks love... Sawaali means a person in the position of request/ begging... That's how it's interpreted here as seeker and sawaal means question.

I'm persian. There is different between mohabbat and ishq (both translate love to english) in persian and probably in indian.
Mohhabat is a deep kind of like for humans and ishq is loving the lover.
Mohhabat is an Urdu word, Urdu is an amalgam of persian and indic languages afaik. So you are probably right there.

Backstory
The lead is a Muslim guy anwar fell in with the female lead mehru who is also a Muslim.
The girl is in love with a Hindu guy n considers the lead guy just a good friend.
The girl n hindu guy were planning to elope to USA, as they cannot marry being from different religions.
Anwar reveals the secret to society n society kills the couple.
After hearing the news of the murder anwar was devastated n went in utter sorrow he went to a Hindu temple which was quite far from his village (a Muslim guy in a hindu temple)
Local politician claims that the Muslim person in the temple is a terrorist taking a refugee there.
