  • This shows off the Røde NT-1A (a cardioid large diaphragm condenser made in Australia) against the Oktava MK-012 (using omnidirectional capsules, a small diaphragm condenser made in Russia) using a reasonably nice accordion.
In my opinion, the Oktava fares better in passages with slight tremolo (the initial Bach and van Otterloo passages) while the Røde shows a bit more presence in tremolo-less passages (most of the Piazzolla parts).
Recording was using a Mackie Onyx 1620 mixer with Firewire card at 96kHz using the Ardour DAW audio workstation on the Ubuntu Studio GNU/Linux distribution, editing was done using Shotcut (thanks for all being Free Software). Absolutely no effects were employed, gains were matched in the analog domain (obviously the microphone models have different phase).
As a consequence of the omnidirectional characteristic of the Oktava, there is slightly more room reverbation. However, at the recording distance, this does not make much of a difference, nor is there a significant noise floor at the recorded volumes (I left in the video cam mics at the beginning and end for comparison).
Audio encoding was done using the AAC encoder with 48kHz sample frequency at 384kbps. Let's hope most of the quality survives video reencoding.
