  • With Halloween just a few days away, millions are flocking to horror films and haunted houses for their annual dose of terror. Our latest video uncovers the chemistry behind the spine-tingling sense of fear.
"Fear is the expectation or the anticipation of possible harm... We know that the body is highly sensitive to the possibility of threat, so there are multiple pathways that bring that fear information into the brain," explains Abigail Marsh, Ph.D., associate professor of psychology at Georgetown University. Marsh's research focuses on the neuroscience of fear and empathy in psychopaths, among other topics. In the video, she highlights the key brain chemicals and hormones involved in fear and the accompanying fight or flight response.

[Correction: At 3:50: The parasympathetic nervous system (PNS) is the opposite, or the counterbalance, to the SNS (sympathetic nervous system) (not the ANS or autonomic nervous system). The SNS and PNS represent the two branches of the ANS. Thanks to Canis Bonus for catching this.]

I like the black-and-white scene chosen for the interview.
Once, I have to walk through the forest in the dark at night. It was really such a frightening experience.

Yes, animals have the same responses - freeze, flee & fight, as well as fiddle!

So between glutamate, cortizol, and adrenaline...a response of fear results.
    Questions???
Is there a connection between glutamate in the brain and glutamates in foods?
How about cortizol and the various versions of it in medicines?
And how about a culture that is full of "adrenaline" inducing activities, media, stress and such. If so, could there also be a connection between the consumption of such external things and a "fearful" nature whether personal, national, social???

What could be the next stages in the evolution of the human brain? Are there effective ways to strengthen cognitive functions such as (working) memory, problem-solving capacity, mental agility, and even creativity here and now?

That would be “working out” your mental abilities, such as learning something new, studying sciences, mathematics, etc. anything really that makes your mind work.

So the freezing effect stems from our cave man days? Do other animals have this reaction as well?

I know this is 7 years old, but yes, other animals do it. Great examples are those videos of little lambs freezing up when frightened. Kind of adorable.

Great video, thanks for sharing. Small ooops, around 3:50, though, I think. The presenter says that the parasympathetic nervous system is the opposite of the autonomic nervous system. Isnt' the PNS part of the ANS, and didn't she mean to say that the PNS was the opposite to the Sympathetic NS?

I might actually take her seriously if she didn't keep staring off as if she were making shit up as she goes. That is usually a sign that someone is lying. And she appears to have difficulty getting her point across. Why she thinks it's okay to uptalk as if she is asking us if she is correct is also annoying as is the constant droning down near the end of her sentences. That being said, I wonder if anyone gave her a mirror and pointed out how frumpy she looks.
