Oh man, a lot of stuff lol. Sound effects for sure, I like to use them to beef up drums and guitars and basses and anything. Sometimes even use them mixed in with vocal vowel sounds
I'm trying to get more 70's prog-style synth sounds (Yes, King Crimson, early Styx) to complement my guitar-driven tracks. I'm also a "dumb guitar player" who barely comprehends how to set these soft synths up. I really like this one though - seems like it would be pretty easy to get the types of sounds I'm hearing in my head.
Like you, I’m a guitarist who this past year has discovered the wealth of virtual synths out there, and the creative inspiration they add to my song writing tool box. Was thrilled to have found UNION, and grabbed it right after hearing the demos on it. Pretty cool time to be a musician!
I bought this in the early version, for next to nothing and got the free upgrade to this version, with a feature I personally asked for. These guys are amazing and deserve our support!
Lin and SIn Fold: Wavefolding is a type of distortion synthesis where when the input amplitude exceeds the threshold, the peaks get cut off, similar to digital clipping. The difference is that in wavefolding, the curved amplitude peaks get inverted into a series of folds.
As always a good video! Lately Arturia Pigments have seen a lot of use, nice warm character and easy to get lovely slight analog-y randomness out of it... and I do have a bunch of hardware units and it captures the essence many like about the Moogs, Rolands, etc. but with a fresh take. Although one does miss the fiddly twiddly knobs of the hardware.
@@Producelikeapro I like demis hellen bank he created for union , leads one , this is a awesome synth , I can't believe it was selling for 8 dollars when I bought it .
There are more spohisticated wavetable synths like Serum or IRIS2, but (a big but), Union is easy to handle and quite performance friendly since it's last small update. For the recent price, it's a steal or no brainer, especially if your plugin folder isn't already bleeding.
Great find, Warren! Like you, I’m a guitar player mostly, but I do love to play around with synths and see what happens, so this one I’ll definitely check out. I have a few synths that I reach for when I feel like experimenting: the Korg Legacy series, which gives me a lot to play with from wavetable synthesis to analogue sounds, plus the ability to connect them all together! Then I have a plug-in called XILS3, which is basically a VCS3 emulator (remember those?), for some really dirty old analogue sounds; lastly I have an old Yamaha TX81Z, basically an old rack mounted DX, which was great for some low-end grungy bass, and some clean ring-modded bell-tones. I’ve yet to find a plugin that can recreate the sounds I got out of the TX, but I’m still looking...
Thanks ever so much Craig! Agreed, as a guitar player I'm always looking for these kind of straightforward easy too use great sounding Synths to add to my arsenal!! Thanks for sharing your opinion and insight!
This synth is worth over $100 for what it does. Warren didn't even mention it has 64 voices. He was playing around with 8. I got it for 5 at intro price, it's a steal at that price. Even at 20, too.
I've had a chance to play with it now. It's no Arturia. None of the presets sound as good straight out of the gate. The preset list is easier to navigate than a Waves preset list (Codex or Flowmotion are similar style plug ins) but it is still overly complicated. It cost me 21$ US. I don't think it would be a good value at its full price. That being said, I like its user interface better than many others and I will certainly be experimenting to get some different sounds out of it. Thank you Warren and SoundSpot for calling this new synth to our attention. : )
Serum by Xfer Records is sound design on steroids. By far my favorite synth for bass, leads and synth pad sounds. It's a monster! Very popular with Drum'n'Bass and other EDM folks.
At this price it is more than a bargain , it is a steal lol , I have a feeling this synth is going to be way popular , it has only been out for 2 months , and it already starting to get a big following .
Even is you don't like Union, you can use it to generate random wave tables, and you can import them into Vital, a free wavetable synth. Only thing is that Union's wavetables aren't as many samples as what Vital looks for, as far as I can tell...4k vs 20k, roughly. This is easily taken care of with the lfo's in vital.
Got it for 7 € with its expansians. Nobrainer. But I did not even really check it out. There are so many good softsynths nowadays :) I like Twiggle... Ana2... Synthmaster and Iris2 is mind blowing for its spectral soundshaping. Anyway... cool synth!
hello warren huart, i want to ask you, but don't know on which video to ask (you have many wonderful videos), so my question is do you eq channel in solo? what is the better and correct way to eq a channel? solo or while playing the whole mix? thanks.
I don't think you are starting with the factory defaults are you?My sine, square and saw wave sound nothing like that on the default setting. It's a bit difficult to follow this therefore, unless I'm missing something?
"I'm just a dumb guitar player..." Far, far from it, Warren. Great review of this 'bargain' synth. It's amazing value and I recommend it to anyone who wants to dabble in synth/keyboard sounds as a part of their production skillset. And, as a "dumb guitar player" myself, I am enjoying using Union. At the price it sells for, it's almost a no-brainer to add some great sounds to your studio.
Hmm... not bad sounding, but i really miss filters on this. It seems to get very harmonically rich and you‘d need at least one filter to shape and tame it. Without filters, you‘re gonna have a hard time placing the sounds into a mix, as it will clash with everything else. The EQ might do the trick, but imo an EQ should only be for the finishing touches.
I bought this at the time it came out but found it a bit lacking in functionality. The presets sounded generic. What I designed myself again just sounded similar. The effects also aren't great. For the the price I paid its worth it but there's no way I'd pay top dollar for it.
Check out mpowersynth from Melda Production. Many cool sounds, as well as tons of buttons that do stuff :) And, it has a 'Random' button for each oscillator and filter; so even we mere mortal guitar players can create custom sounds like the cool folks ;) 👍
I recently bought a Moog Subsequent 37 CV, so I'm good. Softsynths simply sound bad compared to the real thing. I've been trying to find a good softsynth, and while some are good, none of them really come close to the real thing. Eventually I just gave up and got a real synth, instead. I think the best softsynth I've personally been able to find was one that came with the Akai MPK Mini, the "Hybrid 3". Of course, while drowned in a mix I suspect that a softsynth will do just fine and you wont' be able to tell the difference in most cases. On its own, though, they don't cut it.
@@ramseysounds2086 Yes, they can "cut through", that's not at all what I'm saying. I'm saying they sound nothing like an analogue synth, except for in some few cases with the right kinds of sounds.
@@jorgelatorre2579 I've been wating to try "the legend". Clearly a top contender. But while it attemps to sound like a minimoog, it still fails. Best attempt so far, though.
How do you use synths in your mix?

Pads and ambiance.
Alot. Sometimes just a soft pad, sometimes whole tunes is nothing but.
