HT-A9 are bigger and better. Its a complete 360° audio system of 4 speakers. SA-RS5 are just complementing the sound bar.

I’ve had these speakers along with the woofer for almost a year. I feel like they’re defective or something. Sometimes sound only come out from one rear speaker. I’ve reset, optimized, and reset the wireless channel of the rear speakers and sound bar so many times. Sometimes the sound from the rears is so soft even at high volume and with 7.1 channel audio playing. I’ve got the speakers connected to my 55” Sony A80J OLED tv. These speakers are kind of disappointing, but it’s probably defective.

Seems like a missed opportunity by Sony not to:
    1. Make it possible to use the smaller RS3 surround speakers as mid/side speakers in tandem with the new RS5 surround speakers as rears. This would obviously boost sales of both the RS3s and RS5s, as people wouldn't feel the need to replace the older ones with the newer ones. Instead they could just integrate the old speakers into the rest of the system.
    2. Make it possible to use the RS5 as an independent Bluetooth portable speaker. Why add a sizable 10-hour internal battery if you have no intention of using it as an independent portable speaker? Most people are going to use these in a living room or bedroom where they have plenty of wall outlets, so the batteries will go unused by most people. Sony engineers from previous eras would have nailed this dual function potential, but not modern Sony.

Thank you for this insightful review. I actually wanted to buy the complete HT-7000 set this week when I suddenly read about the problem when the sofa is right against the back wall and the rear speakers sound impossible. The whole system is then no fun because it cannot produce surround... or so they say. For me it sounds better than the A9 due to the center channel. also the sound bubble is about the same with the new rears. I will say the a9 had this bass to it with the sub. You still get that with the 7000 but it was a tad bit better on the a9. the dialog is great on the 7000. You can hear all the voices without any problems. the a9 struggled in some areas with this. Also any sounds that are front heavy the A9 just didn't have that pop to it like the 7000 has. Sony should just combine the a9 and 7000 together so they can play together. that would be awesome! The features exist primarily because it’s always easier wiring your front then your rear speakers since the dawn of 5.1. Even if your Just plugging into power. Open concept living rooms are quiet common in homes and there are no plugs in the back of your couch unless you pay for them when your home is being specked. You get that one plug on the right hand side of the wall near the edge of the living space and that’s it. And your definitely not running an extension cord. Remove the wires problem solved. A couple of proper height rear speaker stands. And you in Dolby Atmos Heaven at an affordable price.

Sony certainly reads all of these posts and they know that customers want increased/expanded functionality with their existing wireless speakers. Sony is perfectly positioned as a company to add a great deal of new portable/multi-use functionality and utility to their existing lineup of products. And, they could do that in a way that let them not only compete directly with Sonos in multi-room the wireless home audio, but also step significantly above and beyond what Sonos is offering in terms of product flexibility. I wouldn't at all be surprised to see Sony do exactly this here in the next year or two. They have all the tools they need in place now to make a major push in exactly this direction - and I certainly hope they do!

Make sure you went through all the setting, theres a bunch to adjust and there is volume buttons for the rears and subs on the remote. Also make sure your tv is newer with at least Dolby Plus and you have 360 mapping enabled in the sound settings.

@@fiscustom5893 Thanks for the hint. Please let me explain what happened in detail.
I have a sony A90J oled tv (2021), ps5, and sony A7000 sound bar. ps5 in connected to the sound bar (using pass through) and sound bar to TV with eARC hdmi. Every thing is perfect especially if you use a 3.5mm audio to use your tv as center channel. This option is available for sony master tvs.
I added the SA-RS 5 rear speaker to have a better surround and 360 spatial experience. Optimization took 30 seconds and I was able to hear from rear beeps sound during calibration clearly. Then I tried netflix with dolby atmos movie and surprisingly, very low (almost nothing) from rear speakers. Then I tried a blue ray 4k disk and same thing. Here is the list I did:
      1. disconnect ps5 from soud bar and connect it directly to TV. nothing! I just have VRR now because sound bar can't support it yet.
      2. make sure are setting are correct such as volume setting on rear speaker, turn off dcr and dsee (if I am not wrong), change location of speakers, increase level of DB to 6 (in this case I was able to hear something from speaket if I place my ear close to the up-firing speaker,....
      3. reset entire system
still nothing. As I mentioned before, sony accepted an exchange.
      SORRY FOR THE LONG STORY!

I have the HT-A7000 already and wanted to boost the surround/Atmos effects, but I think my biggest issue is my ceiling. It’s 13’ and vaulted left to right when facing the tv. That pretty much screws me from getting true Atmos audio doesn’t it? Or does the optimization work well enough to account for that?

@@anandsjha I just bought and installed them a couple days ago. No improvement to the spatial audio and they’re quieter than I’d expected. But, if you install them low and close enough they’re great. Not only does it at least create a 2D surround sound, it opens up the stage on the sound bar itself considerably. So I still don’t get 3D surround but it sounds awesome.

    OK, so I am pissed.
I recently abandoned all my older Home Theatre gear (tower speakers/Receiver etc), bought a Sony HT-A7000 soundbar and SW3 sub to go with my new 65” OLED TV. I felt that it was weak sounding, so just bought a pair of the new (and expensive) SA-RS5 rear surrounds.
After setting it all up today, I am shocked at how quiet and anemic the rear speakers are. Even when set to “Max”, they barely emit any sound whatsoever, and it doesn’t really sound any better than before.
Is there something setting-wise that I am possibly missing, or is this all they will do?

In my opinnion, this 5 expensive soundbar sets like sony, bose, sonos and samsung all have great things and have their weakpoints. But an classic onkyo amp with a couple wired speakers made from wood and wheight 20kg each always sounds a 1000 times fuller and better and you always get dissapointed if you choose a plastic soundbar over them. I had alot. Onkyo pioneer and sony amps with wired bose speakers, wharfedales, Hk audio , even sonyspeakers 5.1 set and they al sounded better then the sonos arc set and bose set. I must admit the bose 700 is a beast of a sub . Sad you cant choose the bose 900 with sub and pair a couple of sonos era 300 speakers. Then it would come close to a classic wired big amp soundsystem
