    That's a very smart strategy, the only downside that I can think of is that you may miss an opportunity because you tied your cash. Let's say that you sell a put option and you don't get the shares, you only get the premium but another company on your watchlist hits the buy price and you miss buying it with that cash because it was tied to the contract or 10 days after you make the contract you discover another investment that you don't get to buy. So you are paying in opportunity cost because the cash is not exactly liquid but from a risk/reward perspective, it's a great strategy.

      You are right, so my plan isn't to tie up all my cash up in this, maybe 3/4 of it. Then I still have options

    Hi Andrew, the reason the option wasn't exercised is because it's an American-style option (looks like you're using Saxo, and they provide American-style options). American-style options, which give the holder the right to exercise the option at any time before expiry, get executed before the expiration date (except in some very specific cases involving dividends). The American-style option is always worth more in the market than once it is exercised, so it won't get exercised until expiry. That is a counterintuitive result in contrast to European-style options, but that's the reality. Hope that helps, thanks for the video!

    There is an opportunity cost to selling puts. If you sell the put you are committing to buying the stock and therefore those funds are frozen for the contract period unless you can buy the puts back at a lower price than you sold them for. Just a thought...

    • @AndrewBrownInvesting
      @AndrewBrownInvesting  3 роки тому

      Agreed, but in my situation and I think many others, there isn't many stocks that I would buy in general. Unless I find something else during the lock up period (which has been hard). So I'm not locking up all my cash, just in case. You are exactly right though

    I think it didn’t execute because it wasn’t the date of expiration. So Ed can just sell to close the put he bought at a lower price and keep his shares. If the stock price is to high like the Amazon example you used you can do a put spread and only tie up the cash you want to risk. For example I just sold BABA put at 250 and bought a put at 240 so I’m only using 1000 dollars of my cash for that trade. My max loss is 1000 if it goes below 240 at expiration but I made over 200 dollars in premium. I like to sell puts or calls 3 weeks out because that is the time when you have the fastest time decay which.

    • @AndrewBrownInvesting
      @AndrewBrownInvesting  3 роки тому

    • @robertalonso545

      I started studying options this year so I converted half of my portfolio into LEAPs. Currently I’m buying long term calls 2 years out and selling shorter term calls for protection/income. If there is a crash my portfolio has more downside risk than just holding the stock so I try to offset that risk with selling calls. My goal is to eventually be able to own 100 shares of Berkshire to be able to sell covered calls on it instead of using LEAPs.

    I understand that stocks do not only go up, but historically the S&P500 in the long term does.
    So I was thinking, assuming that a crash might happen in the next couple of years or even months from now, would it be wise to sell VOO/SPY puts at a strike price 40-50% lower than the current price?
    Worst case scenario, you end up buying an ETF that will eventually go up, at a huge discount.
    Right? Am I missing something here?
    PS: I have zero experience with option trading

    • @AndrewBrownInvesting
      @AndrewBrownInvesting  2 роки тому

      Hi great question. Firstly, don't assume a crash might happen. We have no idea.
      Selling puts on VOO at a strike 40% lower than current price sounds great but no one will buy those puts from you. So I don't think you will be able to do that. You can check, but I doubt it.
      In theory your idea is very good, just unlikely to be possible because who will buy that contract from you. 🤷🏻‍♂️😅

      Great question. The answer is no, you are not losing money. For some reason, over the timeframe of your option, it starts as a negative and slowly works it way to 0.
