  • In this video I try and understand the character of Travis Bickle by looking at characters in the movie that influences the motives of our lonely Taxi Driver.
    A fresh faced Robert De Niro with his Best supporting Actor Oscar still clutched in his hands plays Travis Bickle for new kid on the block Martin Scorsese's seminal cinematic masterpiece Taxi Driver.
    In which Travis a taxi driver slowly loses all hope in humanity and the people all around him until he meets Iris, a 12 year old prostitute who he believes needs saving from the life she lives.
    But it isn’t the story of Taxi Driver that is interesting it is the Taxi driver himself that is fascinating.
    Travis Bickle is one of cinema’s greatest characters and has been analysed by many great UA-camrs and even one of cinema’s greatest directors. All of them are expertly crafted and they have done their extensive research on the movie.
    But I want to talk about what stood out for me when it came to Travis.
    His one quality that sets up the movie and carries Travis to his spiralling mental breakdown.

    A lot of people keeping asking about why did Travis Bickle flip out in this movie .
    Its not hard.
    If you look into his history , Travis served in Vietnam and all soldiers that came back from Vietnam were nutty in the head , bullets , bombs, close friends blown away .
    That can leave you with serious mental issues and nightmares for years to come . So being a taxi driver in a crappy city don't help either .
    Watching dirt bags come out night , pimps , hookers , corrupt politicians . The city he worked in and the country he served was worse then Vietnam !
    So he decided to do some street justice his own way .
    ( P.S Rambo is another movie of a solider coming back home a little nutty in the head) . Its a true condition.

      @@joey.steely00 no. what's weird is Martin denies that Travis is in any way supposed to be sympathetic. I kind of don't buy it. Travis is shown a lot of love in this movie.

    Interesting stuff. I get nerdwriter vibes from you. It’s a shame my brain is too small to understand these cinema critiques, even after binging a few hundred of them.
    It’s like the reverse of junk food. I eat it, but nothing is going on upstairs.

      Thanks! Nerdwriter was and still is a huge inspiration when it comes to making these videos.
      And trust me the best way to understand a movie is to find out what it takes for you to get the brain working. For me it was writing about them. For you, it might be the same or it could be having a discussion. Give it a try.
      I failed media studies which had film studies in there at school. Sometimes you just need to find your own groove of working.

      Hey, about the art studies.... it's like a professor telling his students- "NAme the greatest female poet and why it's Sylvia Plath". To keep on such studies you gotta accept lecturers' point of view. The creativity a rebours...

    travis bickle is the most interesting and relatable character to me. Not down bad enough to be considered an incel, but still a nobody, a nihilist and an overall doomer. Junk food, pain pills, booze, cigarettes, sad jazz music and although I have about 5 or 6 close buddies we don't really spend much time nowadays, mainly on me because I don't like going out or hanging out with people anymore despite being really close with them at one point. I almost prefer drinking and smoking alone more than anything once I get back from a job that completely isolates me, in an apartment that I also live alone in.
    Also a strongly deep rooted hatred for people like those pimps he got at the end...I'm 24 and have been in 3 full relationships throughout my whole life, however they've all ended within months, a little over 5 months being the record. The first time I saw this movie it cut right to the bone.

    You have very good points I agree with and the video is overall well put. But what was with the delayed white transitions?

    • @filmisjustmovingpictures
      @filmisjustmovingpictures  4 роки тому +7

      I really enjoy the music so I like to delay so that the music is involved not just background noise but I think for some parts the music was hard to hear when it was going into a transition.

    Do you think Travis never had a relationship with a woman due to his social poor skills?

    • @filmisjustmovingpictures
      @filmisjustmovingpictures  3 роки тому +4

      Thanks, i'm glad you liked it! To answer your question, i think he has had relationships in the past but maybe they turned out negatively and that's why he took Betsy's break up really bad.
