I played this game so much with my cousin back in the day. Its so broken but so fun. Also there is a map editor and a lot of customization, so it occupied us for hours at a time.
This is one of the golden classics. When he said that it still holds up today, he wasn't kidding.
I'd recommend it to anyone that likes turn based games in a hot second.

Yeah, sadly Age of Wonders doesn't actually normally run on CGA graphics.
Actually you can get the game on STEAM. It's initially sorta buggy, particularly when trying to load cutscenes or entering battle, but it was recently given a patch and now it runs smoothly.
Still trying to get my Goblin army to take part in beginning assassination quest of Elwyn though, but in between the enemy Elf forces constantly besieging my cities while trying to acquire money by building merchandise to raise funds to make more soldiers, and my own troops abandoning me because I don't have the funds to pay them (as I spent most of it an getting about three more spearmen to try and hold the city; seriously, how do I not have more funds?! I dug up two gold mines! Do I need to _actually_ put people over them to retrieve the gold).
I even trained my Leader (who has two starting points in Earth Magic and one in Death Magic) learn that one spell that DOUBLES the output of mines and cities for a brief period of time.
How am I supposed to win?!

I'm 26 now and as a kid I remember visiting my older brothers and playing this on their computer, also command and conquer, diablo 2, rollercoaster tycoon, and sims. Simpler times. Video games were ironically way more fun when they all looked like shit.
Your imagination does the heavy lifting when they looked like shit, and that's the strongest thing you have. Like Chrono trigger and other JRPGs, they can only pixelate so much emotion, but man fuck if I don't remember it being way more emotional than what's shown because imagination filled in the blanks.
