I've checked so many videos on this technique, and it wasn't until your video that I got it. That "one motion" emphasis is what did it. Thank you so much David!
I have to congratulate you. Your the only person that has successfully taught me how to do them properly. I now do them perfect every time. Thanks a bunch dude!
really well taught, you actually take your time to explain exactly what your doing, you dont rush anything so we can see exactly whats going on, the finger demonstration was great. Great job - keep up the good work.
Thank you so much! You are the best guitarteacher in the web. You explain it easy and so that also beginners know whats going on, not like the other teachers how show it one time in normal speed in one camera view! keep up that great work!
i watched this instructional, 20 minutes later i figured out how to do it in the way you taught it, about an hour later, i found my own style to playing a pinch harmonic and perfected it! thanks man, i picked up guitar only a couple of months ago and find myself learning a lot faster than most people have told me they learn, so i tryed learning to play a lot of death metal, which didnt work without the pinch harmonics lol
Love the way he can't hold his smile back cause he knows it sounds great and how statisfied the people will be when they get it done in some moments of the video ^^. Proper explanation Sir much appreciated!
really helped ALOT all i had was a friend tell me to graze the string with my thumb after i pick it, this actually gives you a little more to work with.
Good video. My addition: The sweet spots for the picking hand to hit are the natural harmonic spots in the bridge area ! search natural harmonic spots in the bridge area, pick at one of these spots for doing artificial harmonics and there you have your good artificial harmonics ! This was a real eye opener tip for me personally...
thanks a lot man... i almost cried....when i got my 1st haromic so clear..!!! now im practicing it every day after my pentatonic exercise.... thx dude..!! God bless..!!
I didn't have my distortion pedal, but the OD on my Vox and the bridge pickup of my Epiphone got the job done after a few tries. It was easier after I angled the pick a little. Stuart Smith uses a thumb pick and his pointer finger to do this. I hear it's harder, but he gets great results. Thanks David, I had been trying to figure this out for a while. I just wasn't using enough gain.
I like medium picks but the pinch harmonic will work will all sizes. Yes, the pick thickness effects your tone - try different gauges and experiment what sounds best and what feels best to you. Rock on! -DT
Very helpful. It made me realize what I've been doing on those occasions where the pinch harmonic just come out naturally in the "heat of play." Now I can hone in on the technique now that I know what actually causes that kick@$$ sound. I'd add that there is a certain "flick of the wrist" technique that can be done which make these organic. I'm realizing that the "digging in" with the pick can be done with attitude, and a slick flick of the wrist that will make a part or parts of your picking thumb to "mute" the string immediately after your pick plucks the string. Good tutorial!
JoelPR511 Hi Joel - thanks so much for watching and your kind words - most appreciated. Glad we can help with the harmonics - they take a little practice, but stay positive and you will get it! I knew the pinch harmonics theory, I could get it here and there, but not systematically... during your video I made more harmonics then ever before and I think I got it finally. :-) I could always rely on you, Dave. ;-) Thanks
Your explanations and video is amazing. I was able to do a Pinch harmonic by the 5:20 mark. Absolutely amazing. Subscribing, and I'm going to watch more of your videos. Best guitar teacher on UA-cam, no contest.
Finally! I was trying to do it completely wrong for a while and almost gave up on this. The lesson helps a lot, (I figured that it's harder the closer I get to the bridge rather than the neck, I guess it's the hand position). Also I've got an Epiphone Les Paul convinced by another video of yours where you were comparing it to a Gibson, so thanks again. It is the "plus pro" with ProBucker pickups and coil-tapping and it's perfect! keep it up!
Fabio Croce Hi Fabio - no problem - so glad that we can help - thanks for watching our videos and I am happy to help you along in your guitar journey! Keep up all that hard work and keep on rocking! -David T, NLG
Awesome! Keep up the hard work - yeah, it takes a while to get the feel for nailing the harmonics - keep working at it as it will get easier and easier with time rock on! -DT
thank you so much. i did it in first try when you showed me. now i will need just 1 short year to learn how to do it in solo, but as you sad practice, practice and practice.
One of the best lessons i've ever seen. Not much blablabla. Well explained especially when you use your finger as a string lol. Unlike the 240p it was very very clear !! Good job!

The best teacher on YT I've watched. This guy deserves a thumbs up on his videos. I play most lead with my single index finger as I have never been good with a pick. I did use a pick 30 or so years ago- somehow I just transformed since I pick with fingers. The pick feels unnatural and ends up slipping away. LOL. Need a video on us old weirdos who don't use the traditional methods of picking. Perhaps we're just OOL. The 58 thumbs down people must be spoon players.

this video has been very helpful. i've been looking around at learning pinch harmonics all day, and once i saw this video, i started getting the basics of them in minutes. not 100% there yet, but probably will be soon after i practice 'em some more. thanks :D
Those first two hints were great. I usually play pretty clean and on the neck pickup since I love me some clear bluesy strat tones. Didn't know I was making it harder for myself.
Thanks for making this. I've been trying to get it down for a few weeks now, but somehow the way you explained it made much more sense. I accidentally did one today so I am very excited to be able to do them on command :D
If you're hitting with the flesh of your thumb, it'll more than likely mute. I try to aim more for the side of the nail since contact will not outright stop string vibration. Also, you could try hitting the string with a little more force with your pick - I tend to get more clarity and "scream" that way. The idea isn't to stop vibration, just limit it so very light and brief contact is key. And um, I just learned how to do this and those are my observations.
Man you are AWSOME i am 14 years old playing guitar about 2 maybe 3 years and i never learn it how to do those harmonics and now with your video i have learn it ! Lol Pretty cool man keep the good work
When I first discovered I could do it, it only worked when I was fretting around the 5th-8th fret. That's because of where my pick hand is normally positioned (for effective palm muting). So I have the right pick motion but I have to learn to adjust my pick hand position to get squeelies when fretting at the 2nd-4th frets. That is coming along with practice and experimentation.
agreed. i think what he was trying to convey was that you might have to ever so slightly dip your thumb lower to actually hit the string seeing as the pick even if you choke down on it will of course be slightly lower. almost like a eighth or even a 64th of a turn of the thumb.
Thanks a lot! I never knew how to do this untill now, i was practicing right away and got one to go really high on the G string 12th fret and it sounded awesome!
hey dave, hows it goin dude? anyways, i just wanted to tell you that before i watched this vid, i never knew how to do the pinch harmonics. after i watched, i grabbed my epiphone, special II les paul, plugged it in to my spider 3 amp, and did the pinch harmonic on the 3rd fret of the low E and it screamed at me on my first attempt. just wanna say thanks, and that all of your vids REALLY help. im still rockin. thanks a ton dude.
You have to strike the harmonic halfway between the fret and the bridge for an octave harmonic, for example: fret at the 12th fret, you should be picking and striking over the 24th fret. For octave 5th, you have to pick 1/3rd of the way from the bridge, for example: open string, pick at the 19th fret, and for the double-octave, 1/4, for example: 5th fret, pick over the (imaginary) 29th fret. It's important for harmonic melodies to position the pick accurately, or you'll just play random notes.
Oh my god, i don't know how you did but after watching this i could just do it. I've seen videos that tell me the exact same thing but for some reason when i watched this one i could do it. Thank you so much : )
Might be a dumb observation, but in having just learned this I've found you get more clarity (assuming you've found a relatively good sweet spot) if you strike the string with a little more force. Not sure if this is a good method of getting consistent quality or not, but it works. From watching players like Timmons and Satch, the single squeals always seem to involve a more powerful single wrist movement.
A true "artificial" harmonic is when you hold down any note that you want to be heard 2 octaves higher and then lightly place your finger a Perfect 4th above that note on the same string (as if you're playing a natural harmonic). that's easier, of course, the higher up on the neck you get. that's how artificial harmonics are done on violin, cello, string bass anyway. i was just interested as to how you would explain what a P4 is to guitarists, but i learned something different. thanks!
Hey if you still cant do it you could try a dime(coin) for the picking part it helps out cuz it kind of makes you hit the string. this helped me out, hope it helps you.
i find that a smooth shiny pick and a hi-gain amp setting helps. also fx pedals change the difficulty of producing a harmonic, my metal pedal makes it easier, but a flange for example makes it harder.
Hey thanks for that. This is a great lesson. I'd been wondering for years how to get those squeally sounds. I got the hang of it after just an hour of practicing and can do it great now. Cheers
@Aprosarmostoi On the lower strings you have to pinch a little harder. When I pinch on the 6th string i almost make contact. On the other hand, you have to pluck the higher strings a lot softer. Keep at it, you'll get it.
Thanks a lot dude, ive never understood these harmonics.... but i practised it with ur ttechnique for not 10 minutes, and its sounds pretty good :) Now i can play Killswitch Engage and many more, and it sounds awsome :) THX ! :)
Oh my gosh it all makes sense, I've been trying to do this for the pat month with a similar trick that didn't work so well, trying this trick as soon as I pick up my guitar
This is the only video that has helped me lol, took me like 10 seconds to get it after watching... Thanks lol all the other videos are confusing but this one is boom I got it :D
hold the pick at a little bit of an angle as if you want to 'slice the string'. when the string comes off the pick you kinda want it to bounce into your thumb.
Nice lesson on pinch harmonics. I was wondering if you have any pointers for the harmonic effect where you do hammer ons with your left hand and slide a finger along that string to create a flanging effect. I can't get that one to ring out right.
+A7X A7X no prob at all! So glad that u liked this lesson and I am so happy that we can help you along in your guitar journey. oh my god. I finally learnt how to do the screaming with guitar :) I gave up after two days of tries and had my guitar in lap and watching a video on pc and strumming g string unintentionally and suddenly I noticed the my guitar squealed. And 5 minutes later I was making guitar scream on command. The magic trick is to do everything this guy says plus one thing. pick the string with soft hand. once you get around doing with softer grip on pick gradually increase the holding force on pick.
great lesson man! i learned pinching long time ago, but if i would need to show someone how to do it, i'd probably explain it just like you, only with less words... or i would just send 'em a link of your video. rock on! :)
@puddingpimp Best way to practise this to play scales in harmonics, start with the octave harmonics, then play the octave 5th harmonics, for example finger an A major scale in 4th position and try and play an E major scale in the harmonics. It's super important if you want to cover violin pieces for neo-classical guitar, otherwise the guitar doesn't have the range in the treble.
@XJaysonRX he says you have to "dig in" - you dont, just sort of lightly brush it with your thumb after plucking the string. But as he say's it is one movement, not 2.
I really really have to thank you! I been struggling i been tearing my damn hair of, pinch harmonics is hard in i looked at many on youtube! Saw yours today and thought hell ill give it a go. Went out set up the amp .. second try i got a "squeelie" that nearly made me deaf ... thanks its really important like you say the thumb and pick should hit more simultaniusly than pick then thumb as many explains it! 5 Star rating from my part!
Now it makes sense, I always play this 1 riff that I created that climbs down 2 strings then bends the next staring and sometimes it would pinch harmonic, sometimes it wouldn't and now I understand why
I've checked so many videos on this technique, and it wasn't until your video that I got it. That "one motion" emphasis is what did it. Thank you so much David!
Finally someone who visually explains the technique, thank you my friend.
This guy's explanation is so much clearer than anyone elses. I love it. From taking the lessons from his guy, in about my 5th try i got it.

OK, I spent some time in the past days trying to do an artificial harmonic, but I have just watched this video and it really helped my out.
Thanks
Great lessons -you explain all of your techniques so they are understandable. You have helped me alot in the last few months. Great stuff!!!
The best Pinch harmonic i have ever seen. Others are just crap. This guy comes into the details! 5 stars!
I didn't have my distortion pedal, but the OD on my Vox and the bridge pickup of my Epiphone got the job done after a few tries. It was easier after I angled the pick a little.

By far the best pinch harmonic lesson on UA-cam. I tried it last night for about 30 minutes. Not as easy as it looks, but what is with the guitar?
try a very light touch to get that finger slide sound to work - very light touch - like a natural harmonic. rock on! -DT
A true "artificial" harmonic is when you hold down any note that you want to be heard 2 octaves higher and then lightly place your finger a Perfect 4th above that note on the same string (as if you're playing a natural harmonic). that's easier, of course, the higher up on the neck you get. that's how artificial harmonics are done on violin, cello, string bass anyway. i was just interested as to how you would explain what a P4 is to guitarists, but i learned something different. thanks!
Best youtube leesson I have ever seen. I will definately go on the site.
cheers mate. ur lesson was really good cuz u explained it better than most people. thanks.
Hey if you still cant do it you could try a dime(coin) for the picking part it helps out cuz it kind of makes you hit the string. this helped me out, hope it helps you.
excellent. much more in depth explanation. cleared up alot of questions. CHEERS!
thansk u so much man im in a new metal band and now we developed so much change in our music cuz of pinch hormonics
i find that a smooth shiny pick and a hi-gain amp setting helps.
also fx pedals change the difficulty of producing a harmonic,
my metal pedal makes it easier, but a flange for example makes it harder.
Your explanation on how to is so precise. Thank you for adding this golden nugget to my arsenal! Gregg Happyguitar Haynes
THANK YOU, I've been trying to do this for half of a year and know I can finally do it
wow... the best pinch lesson on youtube.. fist one i actually understood and did seccesfully
this was sooooooo helpful. I can do it every other time now I pick. Im into the metal techniques THANK YOU!!!
very informative video. Also a great teacher. I wish I had a cool teacher like him to teach me how to develop proper technique on a greater level.
Absolutely excellent tutorial... got it whilst still watching it! Really good.
Dude that's a mighty nice PRS SE you're playing on.
I personally own the PRS Billy Martin SE and I love it.
Pinched harmonics scream on these PRS's.
Keep at it, you'll get it.

i have now learnt how to do pinch harmonics!!!
Thanks a lot dude, ive never understood these harmonics....
but i practised it with ur ttechnique for not 10 minutes, and its sounds pretty good :)
Now i can play Killswitch Engage and many more, and it sounds awsome :)
THX ! :)
Thanks man, the sweet spot tip really helped, still working at getting the volume, Awesome tutorial

Nice lesson on pinch harmonics. I was wondering if you have any pointers for the harmonic effect where you do hammer ons with your left hand and slide a finger along that string to create a flanging effect. I can't get that one to ring out right.

And 5 minutes later I was making guitar scream on command. The magic trick is to do everything this guy says plus one thing. pick the string with soft hand. once you get around doing with softer grip on pick gradually increase the holding force on pick.
Thank you so much for showing this, this helped me alot and im just 13.
plzz post somemore video's like this for guitar help.
DUDE THANK YOU SO MUCH IT WORKED FOR ME ONLY AFTER 2 MINUTES OF TRYING.
it helps alot because they give off a higher output. normally the bridge pickups are used.
I'm having a little trouble with this. I can't seem to make my guitar sound like the bark at 7:09. What technique with my thumb does that incorporate?
Keep working. At first it'll sound like a Yorkie, but once you practice you can make it sound more like a Lab like in the video.
Remember just "dig in" with the pick then the thumb.
great lesson man! i learned pinching long time ago, but if i would need to show someone how to do it, i'd probably explain it just like you, only with less words... or i would just send 'em a link of your video. rock on! :)
He explains it so much better than my teacher!
Great video!
it was so hard for me to make them scream, but this video actually helped me figure out the details :)
thanks a lot, it took me about 5 mins to get some decent pinch harmonics
good lesson
@puddingpimp Best way to practise this to play scales in harmonics, start with the octave harmonics, then play the octave 5th harmonics, for example finger an A major scale in 4th position and try and play an E major scale in the harmonics. It's super important if you want to cover violin pieces for neo-classical guitar, otherwise the guitar doesn't have the range in the treble.
Damn..Thanks sooo much man.. After a few times trying it, it started to sound realy good;D You rock..!
definitely best pinch harmonic tutorial on youtube! thanks!
@XJaysonRX he says you have to "dig in" - you dont, just sort of lightly brush it with your thumb after plucking the string. But as he say's it is one movement, not 2.
dude i just did it ...it's easy thanks a lot :) this guy knows how to explain
Sure, you can get pinch harmonics with single coils or humbuckers - experiment as per this video lesson and you will get it! rock on! -DT
i have been trying this techniqe fore eages and i finnaly got it thanks to our advice, thanks alot!!!
This guy is the best!!!
I'm going to try doing it now.
this guy is a very good teacher! well done! :)
Now it makes sense, I always play this 1 riff that I created that climbs down 2 strings then bends the next staring and sometimes it would pinch harmonic, sometimes it wouldn't and now I understand why
Confidence inspiring. thanks for helping the magic happen
i had same, squier and ernie balls... just keep practising n put gain on max ;)
droping tune on d standard or even lower if possible can help too
