"MAMA" Billy Thorpe and the Aztecs live on GTK. "POISON IVY" Billy Thorpe and the Aztecs 1964 Please just have a listen. Billy was great and lived through all the music eras in Australia since 50s. Beautiful man. I had a crush on him all my life.
I was on the Sunbury Hill in 73 when Billy did this song live, and his finial number for that set. At the end, EVERYBODY (more than a thousand), stood up and cheered. It brings a tear to my eye just remembering the event. Sometime after the Sunbury Festivals, that Live version was also released as a single also.
Billy Thorpe was one of Australia's biggest rockers in the 60s & 70s. His voice was blistering!! 'Most People I Know' is probably his most famous song and has a more 'edgy' rock feel. I hope someone requests it! Sadly, Billy died of a massive heart attack aged just 60.
He kicked the Beatles off the number 1 position in the 60's down here. When John Lennon first landed in Australia, the first thing he said was "Wheres this Billy Thorpe fella??" Absolute legend
A great legend here. RIP Billy Thorpe - I was able to go to a public memorial service for him just after he passed, and I believe Olivia sung this in tribute to him there. Also, Max Merrett singing Slipping Away got everyone's emotions going.
Yes I was there too. 4 March 2007. I remember because it was on my husband's birthday. It was very emotional. Remember Bryan Brown was there? I also saw Peter Garrett in the audience
On my very first day at university (1966) Billy Thorpe and the Aztecs we’re giving a free concert on the lawn. The first live rock I had ever heard. Electrifying - led astray in my first 5 minutes of uni.
Thorpie, gone to soon, always remembered by those of us who were fortunate to be to hear his music. He could sing a ballad, then belt out a rock song straight after. Most of the Aussies from this era, including John Farnham, Jimmy Barnes even the BeeGees started here in Australia. We have wealth of talent down here and I feel incredibly fortunate as music is my Passion to have watched all of these Artists from the Start. 🎼❤️🇦🇺❤️🇺🇸🕺🏻💃🎸☘️🎅🤶🎁🎄🪅🎉🎊
I love Billy Thorpe's rendition of "It's almost Summer". I reminds me of my days as a teenager in the 1960's. Going to Stradbroke Island with 100 miles of beach and not a soul in sight.
Billy's voice is so beaiutifully unique and powerful. I saw him many times. He was sooo talented. Listen to "Mama" live in abc studio. He did a lot of Pub Rock. An icon of Australian Music industry and known world wide. I am so privileged to have had Billy in my world.
Check out Billy Thorpe and the Aztecs "Mama" live on GTK. Amazing performance and so loud that a cameraman later said the TV camera's screws were vibrating loose! Those photos were from the second era of the Aztecs from around 1970. They had the No.1 record when the Beatles toured in 1964 with their version of Poison Ivy. He died some years ago.
I love LOVE {{{LOVE}}} Billy... about 40 years ago I went to a 5 day music festival in Tanalorn NSW and Billy was the biggest loudest rocker there. It was such a privilege to see him live... 💖💖💖
Billy Thorpe and the Aztecs... the original band dressed in suits and ties, then came the "Sudbery" Aztecs... I went to Brisbane and saw the Show "Long Way To The Top" and it was brilliant... I think it was Aussie/Kiwi artists who performed on the TV show of the same name. "Mashed Potato" was one of the first Aztecs hits... and they sang this, then later in the show, they came on as the real ROCKERS. Billy was a brilliant guitarist and when they did their second stint, being just 10 rows back from the stage, I could feel the beat booming in my chest.... it was a show to remember and I have the complete DVDs of the original TV show and of course, the stage show, with Col Joye and the Joy Boys, Lucky Starr, Judy Stone, Stevie Wright (the Hollies), Normie Row, Max Merrit and the Meteors, The Atlantics and so on. If you want to see a great guitar band, check of The Atlantic and their big hit "Bombora". you won't be sorry.
The original artist to record this song was Judy Garland on the soundtrack for The Wizard of Oz... the second recording by Billy was probably about 20 years or so after the first... Bill was known as more of a rocker, but he could pretty much sing anything and leave you with goosebumps...he was abso-friggin-lutely brilliant...the young ones don't know what they've missed... You've really gotta listen to the live version "Most People I Know" from the 70s, at the Sunbury music festival...it...goes...off... ;))
Totally love how you chose to watch 2 versions of his singing this... Billy T was an absolute consummate performer o great status in my opinion. A total delight to be at one of his (& The Aztecs live performances Listening just transported me again
"Most people I know" showcases his gravelly voice that you'll love. And if you come across anything in your searches from the Sunbury Music Festival, that was Australia's version of Woodstock, Billy Thorpe and the Aztecs were one of the headline acts.

We had the pleasure in seeing him live performing this song in a concert which he organised called, It's a long way to the top. Sadly, he passed away shortly afterwards in 2007. We attended his memorial at the Sydney Entertainment Centre. He went from a clean cut singer in the 60s and truly transformed into a powerhouse rocker in the 70s. Music promoter, Michael Chugg, tells a story of when Billy was playing at a pub, it was so loud, the fish in the aquarium went"belly up" and died. Great reaction, I wish you would have done the first one on the list he recorded it in his home and he is playing the guitar then you will hear his God given voice belting out it gives me chills and a little tear everytime I watch it. Billy was also an amazing guitar player
My favourite song of Billys is 'Most people I know think that I'm Crazy'. I think you would love this song, so catchy and to me really showed his style. A real tragedy that this lovely man died at only 60 years old. 🌹

This was done in his early days, I think the live version would be later on in his career, worth checking out, an Aussie legend, and a hell of a rocker
Be fascinated to know what you think of the voice of Bon Scott, the first (and late) singer of AD/DC. Check out Highway to Hell and focus on the vocal. For a rock'n'roll singer, there was a lot of blues in Bon.
Billy went from pop/this style of song to being an out and out rocker. He was a great guitarist. Listen to his Sunbury concert from 1972. Billy died suddenly from a massive heart attack, Australia was shocked and saddened. He was greatly loved as not only was he a great rocker, but he championed Australian talent and helped organise events to raise money for sick and struggling music artists here.

The BEST VERSION IS HIM sitting down in a recording booth … the one with the red background.
It’s the ultimate ‼️
Another true Aussie Icon.
Be fascinated to know what you think of the voice of Bon Scott, the first (and late) singer of AD/DC. Check out Highway to Hell and focus on the vocal. For a rock'n'roll singer, there was a lot of blues in Bon.
Listen to his accoustic version on UA-cam .simply amazing. What a legend
To be fair, if you asked me about Billy Thorpe, Somewhere over the rainbow is not a song I would’ve thought of.
He died suddenly of a massive heart attack in Feb 2007 aged 60. A great lost to Australian music, he was still performing. ❤
Thankyou very much sir.
Miss you, Billy.
IMO one of best best voices I have ever heard
I saw Billy Thorpe at Sunbury pop festival in the early 70s he was fantastic . Hes group is the Astecs
Hi from Australia, Billy went to Salisbury High school Queensland with my brother, very sad when he died.
Fabulous, and a scoundrel 😅
Billy went from pop/this style of song to being an out and out rocker. He was a great guitarist. Listen to his Sunbury concert from 1972. Billy died suddenly from a massive heart attack, Australia was shocked and saddened. He was greatly loved as not only was he a great rocker, but he championed Australian talent and helped organise events to raise money for sick and struggling music artists here.
