I've always like it over there (Ironically enough, I moved back home in 2014, and back down to LA last year...but now I live in the Harlems) but I always felt safe, dudes over there never really tripped on me, especially when I started being seen around, and they knew what I was about (a working man, mind my own business, move with respect etc...) But it's like, I was good around 7th and Vernon, where I lived, watched little dudes grow up...but still get banged on on western haha... it was a whole different group over there. I was eventually good over there too. Shit def still happens, even recently... I'm not a dummy haha...but in general, still one of the better spots to be as a civilian.
