if you know anything about Japanese culture that was his Tatemae response. (look it up: honne vs Tatemae) ihe was pressured by shipper fans in the end. To not incur further harassment and stalking (which Japan has got the weakest laws for it) from them to himself and the publisher and studios (which did happen yes it does happen and can get scary extreme like Kyoto Animation arson attack) he did what he did and it is why he apologized. It is why he said doing this became constrictive instead of freeing and fun. It was at that time as well he got married and decided to prioritize his wellbeing. Im so mad at stupid fandoms and he should have had more of a back bone to be honest.
