  • I have always been curious how automatic fire sprinkler heads work so in this video I purposely set one off to learn the science behind it.

In warmer climates your sprinkler systems may have water behind the heads, but in colder climates (like Canada) we run dry sprinkler systems. That means all the piping between the sprinkler core and the heads contain compressed air, and when a sprinkler head opens, the compressed air escapes and releases a valve which floods the system (and of course water comes out the open head). Keep up the good work!

So do the sprinklers just run until all the water in the pipes is gone? How can they be reinstalled (or would the building be damaged beyond practical repair)?
Finally - how did you just install a sprinkler in the open? Was there a water tank or something?

The sprinklers are typically hooked up to city water so they won't stop until they are turned off. Once it is off new sprinklers can be installed. For this video I hooked it up to a garden hose.

Also larger buildings with sprinkler systems (except single home residential systems) almost always have a Siamese connector by the curb (a Y shaped connector with 2 2 1/2in inlets) marked FDC. The fire Dept hooks up an engine to "boost" water supply above what the normal city inlet can supply.

I really want to. It's only a 2.5 hour drive from my house so we will see.

Nice! I'd love to go see it but I live in Finland and can't afford the flights... Luckily I can at least watch the stream.
I really hope you'll get there!

I was going to say use celsius in the next video and I will become a Patreon, but the low end options are comparatively bad value (compared to Technicality for example)

Darn it - I always tell myself to add the celcius conversions but I always forget. Also thanks for your suggestion I'll look into lowering them.
