Thank you for sharing your teaching journey with us. My daughter also taught for Teach For America. It was such a difficult time for her and also formative. Just like you! She moved from Special Education teaching to Reading Specialist and eventually left to work in Educational Research. So proud of you and others who have taken turns teaching.
Love catch up with your knitting adventures 💚 have a suggestion for you… you know those small tins in your Twice Sheared Sheep advent - put a little pair of scissors and a darning needle plus a tape measure and a few stitch markers in there and drop it into your sock project bag. If you have a few of these put one in each current project bag and you’ll never be lost without a needle again !! Happy knitting & making 💚
SO interesting hearing you talk about teaching. I, too, taught grades 1-3 mostly reading skills (remember phonics?). Wish I knew more about dyslexia to help those little ones. One year I taught in a trailer while they expanded the school, complete with formaldehyde carpets! 😬 But it was in the Catholic School system so not too bad…except the pay. My wish is for you to be happy wherever life takes you 🥰 Btw, the Battenberg blanket is looking great!
@@Mckee4055 Great idea. Sometimes the “old” ways are the best. But there’s not much we can do about spelling. 😉 Too many words don’t sound at all the way they’re spelled!
Thanks for sharing your story about teaching. I appreciate that you told some of the less glamorous details (like being able to use the restroom when you want or even NEED). I know teaching isn't for everyone though I wish our country and culture valued it more as a profession. There is never a moment when I doubt my love of the children and learning but there are plenty of moments when I wish we were compensated for the level of education we have, the skill required to do the job, the patience and kindness to build critical relationships with kids, and the challenges of dealing with the bureaucratic and political side of education (such as testing). Glad you love what you do! Everyone deserves that! Don't forget to think of 'us' everytime use use the bathroom at will.😊
I’m currently knitting socks for my daughter using self-striping yarn and she specifically requested that they don’t match. It was kind of nice to not have that pressure when starting the second sock.
your teaching story is really interesting, and i bet lots of teachers can relate 🙂 --it's such a hard job, but, as you said, super important. thanks for sharing that! also, OMG That Key Lime Pie! 🙂
Self striping dyers I like are Desert Vista Dyeworks in Arizona and the Yarn Badger from the UK. West Yorkshire Spinners also have some self striping colours!
I added another square to my months of the year throw! One square for each month, was only gonna do one square per month but I’m already working on the June square! Been super motivated as spring is coming soon!!
Thank you for sharing your education experience with us. My daughter was a science teacher due to many reasons as your own she left teaching after about 6 years. It is a very hard job and teachers definitely need more appreciation. Love your vlogmas and was lucky enough to get into your membership this term. Stay well Natalie, Kent and of course Toaster 💕
I would love a pattern for a mug cozy! To keep your tea warm or not burn your hands. I tried to make one for my mother in law a few years ago but i think if a professional designed it, it would have come out better lol
I think it would be great to have cozies for cold beverage cups like Starbucks cups. I always get the annoying condensation rings with them and they make my hands so cold when carrying them around. You could do a tall, grande, and venti size.
Hoi Natalie. I love your podcast and was watching them a few months last summer. In September I decides to start watching episode 1 and now I am i 'real time'. While I was watching your podcast I had to learn how to knit socks and I had knit 8 pairs of socks. Now I have only watch your vlogmas everyday.
I picked up my scrappy blanket for the first time in forever and have been working on completing my current magic knot ball. So excited to see some progress on it. Now I can’t put it down
I really appreciate you doing the reading help. My oldest daughter worked with someone to get her reading to where it needed to be in grade 1. It helped her so much 💚
I bought a 100g skein of what looked like stripes Christmas yarn hoping to make socks. It turned out to be a gradient and like you I was not ok with the socks not matching. I think I might make a Musselborough hat with it!
Would you ever consider doing a knitting club through a school or youth community center or even a library when you're back to living in one place? It sounds like you really loved doing that and I'm sure the kids did too.
The abrupt change of colour on your second sock is probably because of the heel. A lot of yarn goes into the heel, and if the colour change happened there, then the firt row across the top of your sock after the heel will have changed more colour than if you didn't knit the heel.
Hey Nathalie, I usually crochet and I struggled a lot to pick up knitting but seeing you make so many socks while watching your videos this last year gave me the confidence to start a pair of socks and I'm loving it. Thanks for sharing so much about yarn crafts, it definitely has an impact

#question: Hi Natalie. I am so enjoying your Christmas vlogs and seeing the advent calendar surprises. Your guessing game with the toy story is great. When I pick up gusset stitches while knitting socks I have been getting small holes along that row, Is there a way to prevent this please? I also had a problem with the yarn falling off the needle when I tried to bring it back through under the previous stitch as well. . I did use a crochet hook one time to do this as I kept finding it so frustrating with the yarn slipping off to bring the gusset stitch through. For an idea for making other cosies. Try making ones for the take away coffee, tea and hot chocolate cups but at the same time have it so it can fold into a pouch on itself so people can place it in their handbags or pockets or other bags so they always have one while out. You could also crochet a loop on it so it could be hooked on to a bag maybe as well. Also making mug cosies as well. Thank you so much for answering my question and Vloging daily. I really look forward to it every morning and seeing your other episodes as well. I wish you, Kent and toaster and wonderful Christmas and a safe Happy New year.
#question I’m really enjoying vlogmas and I’m going to be sad not seeing you every day when it’s over. I appreciate all the work you’ve put into this month. I’m continuing the trend of newbie sock knitting questions. You said that magic loop is a better choice than 9” circulars, but what about using 2 circulars?
I learned sock knitting on dp's. I switched to 2 circular needles about 20 years ago after finding a book at the lys. That's what I've used for years. Then recently I tried the 9", too small- then the 10", better but the 12" are awesome. I don't know where my book is right now, but it was by Elizabeth Zimmerman I believe.
Love Alyson for asking that, I am only an assistant teacher and am considering leaving, just like you I also did not plan to teach or be in the education system. I would love for you to talk about how you worked to make Knitty Natty full time. I have considered making doing my own business and I have been trying to sell my knitting at farmers markets which I love, but I just could use any suggestions

#question - Hi Natalie- Thanks so much for the great podcast and the vlogmas videos. I'm really enjoying them! I am thinking about things I'd like to do better for my knitting and crafting heading into the new year and getting better Finished Object photos and documenting my projects in Ravelry is one of them. What advice do you have about Finished object photos and notes in Ravelry that make for great project pages? Are there things you do throughout your crafting process that help make for a good project page in Ravelry? Hope you have a wonderful holiday season and new year!
#Question: Hello from NC! I’m a crochet lover but have been working on knitting my first pair of socks (pretty much first knitted project ever). It was going well until I realized I was knitting inside out about half way up the foot. I have frogged and restarted several times and always end up inside out again. I’m knitting toe up vanilla sock and using long circular needles for the magic loop method. Do you have any idea as to why it would be working up inside out? Thank you so much for your help! ❤
Hi, I know you have a lot of experience knitting the Musselburgh hat. My question is, can I combine another yarn with my two ply wool fingering weight 316 yarn? What would you suggest? The yarn is otherwise thin and I do not want to make it into socks, knowing that it’s only 2 ply.
#question KNITTY NATTY GAME TIME (Don’t think too hard, this is just for fun) Would you rather… 1. Knit directly from the skein (with space to lay it out) or hand wind every skein of yarn forever 2. Knit only one pattern for each type of project (one hat pattern, one sweater pattern, etc) or knit any pattern just once forever 5. Let Kent choose your yarn for every project (with access to the pattern but no input from you) or only ever knit a pattern with the recommended yarn forever Thanks for playing!! Looking forward to what’s next for you.
This is a little random, but some month ago you went through all your tools and notions and put them into one bag. Are you still using that same system?
##Natty I have a question for you. I have a shawl pattern I'm wanting to do it calls for 80 stitches in a picot cast on I just can't get the picot cast on I was thinking of using along tail cast on to cast on my 80 stitches.

There's a blog post called, "Math for Knitters," that is all about combining yarns and what weight you get when you do that. It's super helpful!
"I'm just being really lazy and need to get it together" describes me on a soul-deep level. 😂 Love the relatability!

If you get three nine inch circulars you can use them as DPN’s when you do toe and heel.

Two circulars is a great method! You can knit the entire sock with two circs, so I think that's a great choice.
