Right? The old cartoons are just fine. The snowflakes of today just can't take a joke. Besides it's not like he was ever celebrated or seen as some sort of hero in those original shorts. He is the butt of the joke, the one we are supposed to laugh at because he's so unaware of how non smooth and non romantic he is. Whether or not one finds it funny it's still obvious that's he's seen as a silly fool, even children get that. But various cartoons actually end with her chasing him and he hates it. That's seen as him getting his comeuppance, be careful what you wish for and all that. Why aren't the old cartoons given credit for getting across that lesson so to speak. And for that matter why isn't Penelope equally seen as a bad guy for throwing herself at pepe despite it being clear that he begging her to back off.

I grew up watching these cartoons. Even young kids knew the difference between cartoons & the real world. Violence & sexual harassment never occurred to us, not to downplay the problems of domestic violence & harassment & abuse - that's all too real, but cartoons are there to make us laugh. Political correctness can go too far; then it's kill-joy & buzz-kill. Sadly no mention was made of the 'Pepe Le Moko' movie starring Jean Gabin - the tongue-in-cheek inspiration for the character's name. Great movie, but with subtitles. Boyer did the remake with spoken English called 'Algiers,' also a good one. Pew!

We can't, and we shouldn't "cancel" that because we can learn from it. Some people are just looking for reasons to be offended to justify their own vitriolic and spiteful existence. Yes this is getting out of hand. Being mad about a cartoon character that hasn't aged well because they negatively portray a race or ethnic group is one thing as I can see why that might be harmful, though usually I think people just can't take a joke and need to learn it's ok to laugh at yourself, but there is seriously something wrong with you if you're offended by the exploits of an animated male animal chasing a female animal. It's not like he ever caught her and started raping her right in front of our very eyes. He thinks he's romantic but he's not that's the joke. While pursuing her he gets his comeuppance that's also part of the joke. And a good number of his shorts end with the girl cat actually wanting him but him not liking her anymore and running away from her. Do people actually watch the cartoons or do they just look for the next thing to be offended about and just pick and choose things that look kinda bad and blow them up from there?

I feel that if he actually had no repercussions in the films, it would be a terrible character, and people may actually emulate his behavior.
As far as completely canceling him, it's too much. He could have a place as a background character in the very least, to being rewritten to adapt him to a modern world; perhaps now he is still French, but tries to pair couples up on blind dates.

I was a child in the 50s and grew up watching all of these "now forbidden" cartoons. This was back in the early days of TV when homes were just starting to have TVs in them. I never thought there was anything real about the cartoons, and as a child, I never saw anything sexualized about them. Of course, this was back when shows were forbidden to show two adults in the same bed; it was always twin beds. It's the adults these days that read the sexual content into them. I believe that it wouldn't be a problem if parents and schools taught about our bodies in a healthy way by not being afraid of naming body parts by their scientific names and teaching the kids how babies are formed without adding religion into it. That's what Sunday school and parent conversations should include. The Constitution states separation of Church and State and we are ignoring that. In my opinion, as a septuagenarian, religion has come to have too much control over our society. The Constitution states freedom of religion but doesn't say that it should have control over everyone's lives. You are free to believe what you want but you are not free to impose your beliefs on everyone else. We have gone back to the puritanical ways of this country's beginning and it isn't part of what a democracy is.

I grew up in 90s Romania. TV was not very regulated until late 90s early 2000s. I watched a lot of movies, tv shows and cartoons in English and by the time I was 6 I already understood the language in a basic form. As my parents keep telling me, I understood well enough that I would laugh at some jokes before they could even read the subtitles.
Anyway, I watched Cartoon Network a lot in those days, and at that time it was filled with old cartoons from the 50s,60s and 70s. Some of those cartoon would often use more adults jokes and expressions that at the time would go over my head, but it helped me learn a bigger vocabulary and be familiar with older expressions and idioms. I also remember watching horror and thriller movies before the age of 10 that later would be rated for ages above 12 and 16 and there wasn't a lot of parent supervision for watching these, because they were either at work or were busy with chores.
This situation was common to my entire generation in my country. The 90s were a pretty rough time, with economic problems and a fast changing society. People weren't familiar with various issues related to TV or weren't technologically savy yet to know how to put passwords or locks on TV channels if they could afford more moderns device.
What I'm trying to say is that we weren't traumatized by what was on TV, we had other issues at home or at school that could be way more traumatic. Children are way more capable of understanding things and withstanding hardships than what adults now give credit.
Of course I wouldn't propose to give free reign to children now, to watch anything with out some control or supervision at all, but we shouldn't be so stressed out serious about it. Sheltering children too much will make them dysfunctional adults. It's better to have them ask awkward questions from seeing something on TV or UA-cam now than them awkwardly dealing with it later on among strangers.
I'm also part of the generation that played violent video games as teenagers.
Keeping all of this in mind, Romania has one of the lowest crime rates in the world.

Instead of cancelling him they could try pairing him up with different characters & come up with unique scenarios on how these pairings would work out,
like have it where a fashion mogul is coming out with a new line of skunk fur clothing and needs hunters to catch skunks to be skinned for their fur, Elmer Fudd gets wind of this & learns that the fashion guy will pay big bucks for each skunk, so Elmer goes out skunk hunting, and he runs into Pepe, and Pepe must pull off tricks to avoid Elmer's hunting tactics,
Or have it where Pepe's car breaks down in front of Witch Hazel's house & she's needs like a skunk liver or something for her newest brew, and she invites Pepe into her house to stay the night, but all Pepe wants is to use the phone, so Pepe needs to avoid the terrors of a haunted house & a witch who wants to take one of his organs,
Or have it where Pepe ends up in the Himalayan Mountains thinking he's in the Rocky Mountains for some winter sports, but he bumps into Hugo the Abominable Snowman, who just happens to have a stuffed-up nose so he can't smell, and he thinks that Pepe is a pussy cat that he wants to name George & keep as a pet, so Pepe has to do whatever he can to convince Hugo that he is not what Hugo thinks Pepe is,
Stuff like That would be pretty decent ways to use Pepe without making him seem like a Lady's Man, I swear these excectives today are such morons!

You do realize, don't you, that the scenarios you listed, or variations, were already done by other cartoon characters. I'm not saying that those ideas are bad, as they could work with this generation (they were all done originally over half a century ago, for crying out loud) and would be brand new, fresh ideas.
The only thing that might be problematic is the skunk-fur coats. PETA would sue because "Wearing fur is murder!" according to them, and an injunction would be laid down that would prevent the release of any cartoons about that subject.

for most of my years of watching Monsignor Le Pew, his behavior never bothered me. three-ish years ago, i heard a comedian's take on the character; don't remember his name, but he was upset because of how Pepe' acted, and how his (comedian's) child was absorbing the skunk's inappropriate moves on the ladies.

Back in the '40s & 50's, these cartoons were shown in theaters between double features (anyone remember those) TO ADULTS! When I was a kid, I hated Pepe doing all of that yucky, icky stuff! LOL I liked Bugs, Daffy & Elmer's three ways...with Daffy's beak being shot into different positions on his head. But none us brought a gun to school to shoot our teacher like today.

That's because adults had their guns and children had theirs... that they knew were toys. Ad kids were taught about gun safety, either as part of their citizenship classes in school, or in hunter safety courses. When they started to ban toy guns (even water pistols seemed to have been banned in favor of super-soakers [which in effect could be even more violent than a water pistol, and do more damage]) seems to be about the time that these school shootings and other mass shootings began.

I forgot what cartoon it was, but one time Pepe actually talked about making love.
OAN: I was always annoyed at how the writers figured that adding _le_ to the front of an English word would suddenly make the word French (not to mention that _le_ is pronounced “luh“, not “lay”; _les_ is pronounced “lay“).

Would you really be silly enough to confuse 1940s slang with today's??
Back then, you'd want to "make" the "love" start to exist by being romantic; hence, "making love". Pinning a flower on a lapel or dress could've been part of "making love".
Today "making love" might mean effing one's brains out, but in the 1940s it was a LOT more innocent.

To answer that question, YES. I get being sensitive but it's going TOO far when cancelling a cartoon character for no honest to goodness reason. Pepe Le Pew was in his own right, a character that schmoozes the form of being amorous and that was his charm despite him being a skunk. Now I do remember my visits at my local expo back in the day and they did have a DVD of banned cartoons. But I feel anime had it a hell of a lot worse when brought overseas. Episodes got cut from their original run, scenes got deleted cause of it being too graphic but that's nothing cause we either poof a skunk out of existence cause he was a parody of a famous actor, or tone down the sex appeal of a female bunny and people just did NOT LIKE THAT. I mean if I had a kid, I'd expose them to what I grew up with, sat right alongside them and explain why all the changes, THEN show the original and leave the judgment call if the choice of watching the original or the dub version was worth watching. Animation EXISTS for a reason and that should never be denied to any generation whose curious about it.

As a society, we’ve become way too sensitive about everything. Do kids today catch on to the references of Maurice Chevalier or Charles Boyer? I imagine the overwhelming majority of kids don’t even know who these men were. My in-laws, who.have passed some time ago, adored Pepe. But they were born in the late 1920s. This is a generational issue, and the cancellation is rather a matter of anachronism. They once tried to cancel the 14th century poet and composer Guillaume de Machaut for being anti-Semitic. The man had taken minor orders with the Catholic Church. And, as a citizen of 14th century Europe, of course he was anti-Semitic. Just about everyone then was. It was “normal” then, just as Pepe was “normal” for his time. This is a classic example of taking political correctness too far. And let’s face it - sexism in our current culture cannot, and should not, be blamed on an old cartoon character. Pepe isn’t the cause - in fact, he rightfully can be seen as a victim of it.

This low-grade woke censorship is annoyingly horrific, even worse, it is almost stalinist.
Cartoons are a hideous waste of time. Children should be learning a second language or a third language, or spending time being physically active.
The content is so mindless that any character stereotypes are the least of the concerns.
Mindless children's entertainment has many defects, and they come bundled together.
People aren't perfect with one fatal flaw, such as being a crackhead but having a 1600 SAT, and a great work ethic, and stellar moral character.
I am going to be honest.... as a person who lean toward being a Democrat when I was younger, but with many libertarian tendencies, and then abandoning the idiotic and inconsistent ideologies of political parties, and then abandoning ideologies altogether. All ideologies are unachievable and unrealistic and require the perfectibility of human beings.
I do not have a limited or parochial perspective. Instead of having children, I traveled the world, and after a lifetime of seeing what works, and what doesn't work, in societies all over the world, this low-grade woke censorship is annoyingly horrific, even worse, it's almost stalinist.

As another person who commented noted, they really aren't "cancelled" - they are still easily found online if you want to see them, but they are being dropped from being included in "new" productions. The 2 groups are actually diametrically opposed and both accuse the other of "muzzling free speech" when, in fact, both groups are responsible for promoting "censorship" . You have the extreme far right holy rollers who proclaim themselves christians but act the same as the people the flood was designed to "wash away", and the extreme left wing, over-the-top social justice warriors who get offended if you look in their general direction. Pathetic, both groups.

The truth is, these cartoons were always made for ADULTS, not chhildren. During the golden age of Hollywood, the short would precede a feature film, from Gone With the Wind to The Great Race in 1965 when the last WB Looney Tunes shorts, barring those horrible Seven Arts toons, were released. Society is so woke about every single issue that we are taking away the evidence of our evolution, our consciousness of wrong and right, what was "okay" yesterday, and with one or two brave voices, came the realisation that just because we've been accepting of a behaviour, doesn't mean it's really "okay". I always saw Pepe as clueless, because he's unaware that he smells bad, and his parents obviously didn't teach him the difference between lady skunks and tuxedo cats. I think he even went gay for Sylvester once! Point: There are lots of squeaky clean cartoons for small children. Leave the Looney Tunes to their original and intended audience, the 18+ crowd.
