  • For Spear Talk 92, we brought Brent Sass to the show! Brent is an American dog musher who won the 1,000 mile Yukon Quest international sled dog race from Whitehorse, Yukon to Fairbanks, Alaska in 2015, 2019 and 2020. He is well known for rescuing other mushers along the Yukon Quest trail throughout his dogsled racing career. In 2011, the rescue efforts of Sass and his then-lead dog Silver at American Summit in blizzard conditions led to the introduction of the Yukon Quest's Silver Award that recognizes sled dogs that have performed acts of heroism on the trail.
In our discussion we talked about how he got into competitive dog mushing, dealing with isolation and mental helath issues while training, day-to-day life taking care of so many dogs, dog bloodlines, the need for a positive mindset at all times, and so much more!

These dogs absolutely love what they do. Typically a musher does not want the team to got over 10mph, that is a challenge as the dogs want to run as fast as possible, especially after getting hooked up. They are incredibly powerful, words can't express the amount of power a star studded team like Brent's has. Great interview

In 2013, I made a solo trip to Alaska to see the northern lights. Turned out the finish line for the Yukon Quest was across the street from my hotel. I could use the tracker online, bundle up and walk out to see teams finish, Sass included. I studied the trucks used to transport dogs. I watched mushers caring for their dogs. Before this, I had a dog lover's biased PETA type assumption of what these dogs' lives must be like. That trip was an eye opener. Brent Sass was who/what reeled me in. He stopped on a mountain to assist another team in trouble and, in the process, basically gave up his lead, a move not usually seen in competition. It dimensionalized / humanized the sport for me. Him doing that drew me in. As a result, I ended up learning as much as possible, sponsored dogs, etc.
It's not a lifestyle I could ever choose, but I sure appreciate the astounding amount of work it takes. I believe the younger generation of mushers take care of their dogs so much better than previous generations did. And, as Brent noted in this interview, technology and science has enabled a lot of that progress. In other words, this is not your grandfather's dog team.
The dog love of my life was a Belgian Malinois, a working dog who was never meant to be merely a pet. Her parents were DEA drug dogs. She taught me difference between working dogs and pets. She and I lived alone together in 3 different countries for 12 years until death did we part. She was my company and yes, we understood each other. So much of what he describes, I experienced with her in terms of trust, the relationship and the exchange of energy with a dog. Working dogs are bred to do what they do. They need a job. Sled dogs are lucky to have the kind of care and respect that Sass and the new generation of mushers provide them.

So cool that Brent was able to follow his dream and turn it into his passion. It's a shame that PETA has to stick their nose in.. these dogs were bred for that lifestyle and clearly love it.
