Megaman Legends 3 was announced and cancelled during my senior year of high school, and my ass is STILL sore about that 12 years later.
Rightfully so, it was a bad day for MegaMan fans.

Same here! It was my senior year, and I had been out of the gaming world that entire console generation in favor of music. Once Legends 3 was announced, I bought a 3DS and was not ready for the disappointment.

28:09 this is basically why I prefer the first game over the second, despite MML2 having so many improvements overall. The setting of 1 was fully realized feeling, with even the individual nameless npcs having their own little story arcs that progress as you go through the plot.
I always bring up one random green dress lady in the City Hall area who locked herself on her balcony by mistake and is afraid of heights. By the end of the game, she’s taken up climbing as a hobby, and is enjoying the view from her roof. Kattleox is the high bar for a setting for me.
As someone who only played the first one as a kid because it was the only one on n64, would you still recommend 2?
@@PurpleRupees Absolutely, it is still a very good game. The core gameplay itself is much smoother, the bosses are a bit more interesting (circle strafing is still the god strat where it applies but there's a decent few fights and bosses where that's not the case.
The dungeons are more varied and while I miss the atmosphere of the first game's ruins, the second's have a bit more meat to them and one exception aside it's a straight upgrade in game feel. The characters and writing are still charming, the set pieces more exciting, the cut scenes more engaging, and the prices of special weapons aside (PSP version is best if an option for fixing that but entirely reasonable for it not to be and not a deal breaker) the special weapons more interesting/varied.
2 is nearly a straight upgrade over 1 in a lot of key areas, it's mostly the feel of 1's setting that I missed from it that makes me keep 1 as my favorite of the two- a very much subjective take that a good few fans disagree with.
@@UserShadow7989 gotta, completely disagree with you on bosses and dungeons not only dungeons in the second game are fewer and isolated from each other but some of their gimmick are horrendous like that water ruin! As for the bosses, they are really all one note whether its from story or gameplay perspective the only one noteworthy was Sera, and she is the final boss so lol
@@ningensan8198 The dungeons don't have that cool interconnectivity (a cool thing from 1), and Nino Ruins drags out for too long (another reason to go for PSP version if possible is there's no slowdown there to reduce the frustration), but I do find the Saul Kada and Yosyonke key dungeons more involved in a good way than what stuff like the sub-gates in 1 presented.
The bosses in 1 didn't make a big impression on me, aside from the Bonne's initial raid on the island and the final boss, oh and the one in the sub-city for its design (the fight itself was a bit dull as just fighting a bunch of mooks chasing it around).

I never knew how much I needed to hear the Eva bit over the Legends 2 credits, but that fits remarkably well. Speaking of mecha, I just realized listening to this plot summary that there are a few similarities to the setup of Turn A Gundam.
Also when he mentioned the Mega Man Volnutt and Roll relationship and compared it to the classic series, I was very confused to see what I think is an SAO clip, until I remembered who was editing.
I had to pause the video and chuckle so damn hard at that! LOL
Now with you reminding me that someone else does the editing from time to time, I'm chuckling even harder XDDD

Given Johnny isn't a fan of doing too many RPG marathons due to how long they take, we probably won't see Battle Network and Star Force any time soon.
Which is fine by me, because those are my favorite Mega Man spinoffs and I want him to have the time and energy to do the games justice

I'm not one to burst out laughing well watching UA-cam. But that joke about Johnny's dad selling his SNES for a playstation that had me bust a gut. Very good deep cut.
The end of Legends 2 is hilarious. Tron and Roll building rockets and arguing about how to improve them while Data is just like "Guess you'll have to wait a little longer, Megaman..."
It's sad because after all this time, he's still stuck far from home and has yet to be reunited with his family and friends. I think we all want Mega, Roll, and Tron to be a trio.
Johnny seems like the best person to have a beer or two with and just discuss video games all night.
Watching your reviews for the Legends games has been a fun ride. Hopefully a Legacy Collection for these games isn't too far off the horizon cause I would love to play them
They have to do it eventually, since they're quickly running out of old games to resell. What I'd really like to see, though, is the Legends games given the same kind of amazing remake treatment they've been giving Resident Evil, so there'd be less of a learning curve to the controls and general gameplay that could very easily scare off newcomers and further doom the series to never be finished. It'd be more exciting and a better show of goodwill toward a criminally neglected fanbase than another Classic series game clearly made on a shoestring budget.

@@LordArikado Dino Crisis, their 3D fighting games, Breath of Fire... Those games deserve more than collecting dust, year after year. Remake or Collection re-releases, Capcom should do something.

Funny thing about the trivia game: Japanese version has actual game related questions unlike the English version's one.
As an American virgin who never got into pop culture as a kid, this made that part INFINITELY harder. Pretty kino decision tho ngl
i absolutely love the way they used textures to animate the faces in this, of all the PS1 games this one's facial animations and cutscenes have aged the best. It's so funny to go back and watch Metal Gear Solid's head waggles compared to this. Really under appreciated creativity shown by those guys at Capcom way back then.

The callback to your SNES collection being sold for a PS1 is hilarious 😂 Good one Johnny.
From what I recall, part of the reason Mega Man 11 took so long was because nobody at Capcom wanted to do it. Or rather, they were too scared. They knew people wanted a Mega Man game, but they were afraid that if they screwed up, the fans would want their head on a silver platter. I can't remember who stepped up, but when they did, everyone make sure he played all other Mega Man games so he could understand what made Mega Man, well, Mega Man.
So yeah, it was a fear of the public that caused the gap between 10 and 11.
Whoever did probably saw Mighty Number Nine and thought they could do better. So they did.

I love how your two choices of waifu here are either one who robs everyone and gets blushy around you, or the one that helps everyone, but robs you blind at every opportunity. Rock has to really think what choices in life brought him to this point
So unlike Legends 1, the Karma System DOES actually have some effect. If you are bad, you can't take the quiz girls quizzes, shop prices are higher, and there's a shop you can access to get a special weapon part. Good mega can't get that shop, but he can take the quizzes, gets discounts at shops, and there are a few other minor events that only happen when you are good.
Is that weapon part worth it?
@@DrSuperLuigiSeth1 not really. The weapon it makes, the Crusher, is a very powerful bomb like weapon. It has short range and does constant damage...however the bulk of it's damage comes from it sitting on something constantly damaging it. Once the bomb explodes on contact, it doesn't move and most enemies won't stay in it's hitbox, either moving away or getting knocked away, plus you need to get fairly close which puts you at risk. Still if you find a big target that doesn't move or get knocked away, it can shred...but those are very few and far between.
Also the only other item in the bad Karma shop is only there for you to resell elsewhere.

Worst part is I have a very specific idea of what Legends 3 would have been. Like, I'm almost certain it is how it would have played out.
The Legends 3 Prologue demo would have launched on 3DS. We'd play as the new protagonist, who many noticed looked a lot like a young Barrel. And, what do you know, he is! He somehow reverted as the results of walking in on some type of crazy Tron/Servbot experiment that was a part of the research to save Mega Man from the moon. But no one knows but him. For most of the game/demo, you play as Barrel who is just "acting as a good samaritan" helping Roll and Tron to find parts for the ship to go save Mega Man. At the end of the demo, they figure it out. And Barrel is set to man the ship to go save Mega Man along with Data.
Legends 3, the full game, would start with players again as Barrel on Elysium. You would dreg through the same hallways you did at the end of 2, to find Mega Man, Yuna and Sera all in pods similar to what you saw on the Forbidden Island. As a safety measure, they have sealed themselves as they do not know how long they may be stranded, and they know they will be needed to save the world should they make it out of Elysium.
Barrel and Data would work together and awaken them, and return to their friends and family on Earth.
But in the process of waking them up, the system was also set to awaken ALL Mega Men. Yeah, we know it can't just be Trigger and Juno. There has to be more. And they will be our big villains in this game. Each of the major ruins has a Mega Man in them. There are... 8 Major ruins... a throwback to the classic series.
Defeat the 8 Mega Men. Defeat the big bad guy. The world will then be truly safe.
But who is the big bad guy? The Sigma Virus Reaverbot. A powerful Reaverbot that was infected with an ancient virus who has become sentient and hell bent on destruction of all non-reaver life.
Throw in some Bonne shenanigans the whole journey. But more of them trying to be the heroes, rather than actively antagonizing Mega Man and Roll.
Cut me my check, Capcom, I wrote the story for you. Shoot, take it for free, I just want Legends 3.
Mega Man Legends 3 was the reason was the reason I bought the Nintendo 3DS back when I was a kid, and seeing it get cancelled was so frustrating. The initial trailer for the Prototype Version said it would launch when the Nintendo 3DS eShop did, which ended up being in June 2011, but once it wasn't there I started to question what was going on. Then a month later, lo and behold the game was officially announced to be cancelled.
I hope and pray a Nintendo gigaleak-style event gives us access to Legends 3's Prototype at some point.

As a LONG time Megaman fan, my personnal headcanon is that Megaman was genuinely scared to be treated differently by his family if he revealed his true purpose to them. Imagine going to the person that adopted you and your adoptive sister/possible love interest and going "Oh BTW there was a dude that tried to wipe out all life on this island and me and him are related."
I don’t think I’ve ever had such a love for a Mega Man character before witnessing Tron Bonne in these reviews. She has such a level of charm to her I can’t help but adore her and her Servbots! I can definitely see why she got her own spin-off. Thanks for introducing me to the best Mega Man character ever, Johnny. And here’s hoping Capcom takes the hint and keeps giving the Blue Bomber more love in the future, whether Classic, X, Legends or anything.
Man, I forgot how great this game looks for a PS1 game. The anime art style really works well.
This series is one of the most legendary in the video game industry for its cancelled sequel, and seeing these reviews I can finally see why fans are so dedicated to the series, that even I felt a bit of that passion from Johnny!

It's wrong to say that it's legendary because a sequel was canned. It was legendary already before that even happened. It just got more attention due to the cancellation.
Small fun fact MML 2 does have a difficulty setting that you can unlock by completing the game, it goes from easy to very hard, easy gives a buster part that maxes all buster stats and cuts shop prices while very hard starts you with a S rank digger rank and doubles all shop prices among probably other things like enemy stats.
I remember getting this for Christmas in 2000. I near flipped when a young me found out there was a sequel to legends/64 after renting the Bonne Misadventures.
It means a lot that you finally took a look at the Legends series. One of my favorite games of all time is actually The Misadventures of Trone Bonne and the Legends series as a whole is something I hold very dear, lots of memory's with these games.
Funny thing, Megaman and Roll being siblings is really only pushed hard in the western side of things, in Japan they’re very back and forth, sometimes they are and sometimes they’re not in classic so rock and roll being a couple I guess is something popular on the Japanese side since all other incarnations have the 2 not related and more leaning on love interests, same applies to other blonde companions like Lyra Note in Starforce and Alia in X if I recall
I need more MML Roll and Tron in my life, and I'm glad you're also on board with MML3. I'm still pretty mad at Capcom as one of my friends back then actually had one of her robot designs make it into the game, then they just kill the project like they did. Here's hoping there's a collection. I want to play this series again!

I love the Legends games! It still hurts that 3 was taken away from us. As someone who grew up with both games I actually like Legends 2 over the first. The whole vibe, story, and gameplay is just superior to me. In any case the whole series is full of charm

The fact that I've been watching this legendary dude sense I was 4, and he has been making videos sense before than is crazy one. And two the fact that this guy makes such great videos and has been making them for years and he still doesn't have a million subscribers, is flat out criminal
A little context on Legends 3's cancellation. Inafune made a webpage called the Dev Room where viewers could vote on which ideas they liked more for the gsme. There was only one problem: this was before crowdfunding became mainstream.
As a result, it was relying *entirely* on audiences staying invested the whole way through. That was without a doubt a losing battle. To add insult to injury, the importance of audience retention was not revealed until Capcom Europe's infamous tweet that without the context sounded like shifting the blame

really love the megaman legends series as i love the world(like how it bookends the series on a peaceful era since the classic era in a way fulfilling dr. light & wily's ambitions .),characters(volnutt/roll being my favorites along with classic versions as they're so adorable together.:3) & villains(love the bonnes especially tron and ancient mystery of the world being more interesting than how downright pathetically sad wily got outside his spirit living in the wily virus or overused one note as ganon sigma got outside maverick hunter x/x8.).
that i'm definitely buying a legends collection asap to fully experience it(think the only megaman stuff left is star force,the gameboy games that was originally going to happen on gba & spinoff's like soccer and battle n chase/super adventure rockman or obscure media.) /really want the remains of legends 3(the only one of the cancellations before shilling street fighter/re that i was sad about alongside to an extent rockman online,also really miss the comics.) to be revived as alongside capcom's older series they should be released to the new fans.

I was just chilling here listening to the review until 16:04 happened, and I was just laughing so hard at it cause of how true it was, I never watched Evangelion or that bit but at first listen made me laughed so hard I forgot I was eating and nearly choked, great review as always, also I'm expecting MMBN reviews later in the future with the Legacy Collection.

This is one of my favorite games of all time. It's so much better than the first Legends game. Capcom is my favorite developer, but the way they handled Legends 3 is truly heartbreaking. I'm glad they have been knocking it out of the park & trying to please their fans as of late. Gives me some hope they will someday, actually finish & release Legends 3.

Although he’s got REmake 4 up next, I’m wondering if Johnny will cover The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog soon, maybe in a spotlight if he feels the Johnny Vs format wouldn’t work for it.
Imagine if, before we got legends 3, we got a sequel to Tron Bonne about her and Roll working together to build the Rocket.
I've never agreed with Johnny more than when he got right up to his mic and told us we better buy a hypothetical Legends Collection if we know what's good for us.
Edit: Pfftttt, Johnny saying to get it 3 times and his editor only being mostly sure he's joking is great. It's great seeing John be passionate about a game, so much so that he's basically telling his viewers what they need to do to revive the series.

Definitely agreed with what you said on both games at the end. I love legends 2 and it has a lot of qualities that I wish were in the first game but I can't say I like it more than that first game cause on top of everything else you mentioned I also liked how interconnected all the ruins were in 1 and how as the game progresses you can practically go through every single part of the ruins and through every sub gate if you wanted to. None of the dungeons outstayed their welcome like this game does too and on a similar note, dying doesn't have as big of a consequence as it does here should it happen.

The beginning oc this game really makes me think of 'Castle in the Sky'. But anyways good video Johnny, it's been a fun ride and heres hoping that Legends 3 comes before I age into dust.
It's crazy that Tron Bonne was in just 3 games and it's one of the fan favorite Megaman characters, but we can't get Capcom to make another one of these.

I'm so happy to see the Legend games get the attention they deserve. They were peak childhood games for me, and I love them dearly. Really glad you enjoyed the ride Johnny, to me they are such underrated gems that aged surprisingly well. And I absolutely agree with how 2 is not better than 1, they are actually neck and neck, but offering different approaches in their presentation. While Legends 1 has a better let's say "hub" area, arguably one of my favorites in any game, Legends 2 amps up the action and delivers great dungeons and mission sequences. Looking back I believe 1 might be the most memorable due to its unique, self-contained structure and the sheer charm and levity it provides, but both games are so incredibly *fun*.
Such s great game to play. I really enjoyed playing this back in 2017 and it was a blast from beginning to end. Nice job on the review as always dude and Happy Easter!!

The interesting thing is that this game not only has the Karma meter but also a Roll likeabulity meter.
So if you are nice to her she will write on her diary about Mega Man in an increasingly good way, and gives some weapon developement price drops.

In a sense, when you really think about it, Dr Light's dream of Robots and Humans living together in harmony came true within the Legends era. Granted, the original Humans have went extinct but they live on as the artificial Carbon ones, which can live as ordinary people and attach robotic parts to them. Thomas laid the groundwork and the Master succeed in making it a reality.

I had to re-buy my copy of Legends 2 digitally because my physical copy was scratched in the perfect way to make the cut scene that starts the 2nd phase of the final boss fight crash the game. But I was glad to do it because Legends 1 and 2 are among my favorite Mega Man Games, right up there with the original Mega Man X which is my literal first memory
